Previous thread

I'm not sure 9 pages will last us, so I'm getting prepared a bit early! Check the last thread first before posting here — we might still be over there.

OP posts:

I'm a sucker for journey darling!

Me too! And an underdog.

Redcrayons · 26/11/2020 16:54

Is she that much of a ringer? She’s good, but she’s no Alexandra Burke.

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 26/11/2020 17:00

I loved Tristan!

Loved the early to mid series when the pros spoke more freely Grin

I only started watching Strictly at the start of season 6 - I'd love to watch the early series in full (including ITT!)

SchadenfreudePersonified · 26/11/2020 17:51

Lots of people (Jamelia included) took this to mean that the producers has already decided that PA would stay (he was seen at the time as a quite a 'big name' booking) and wanted to make it look like he'd danced brilliantly and the Blackpool crowd had loved it, presumably to add credibility to the decision to keep him in.

I can believe it.

I thought the same about Penny Lancaster and her pathetic performance against Gabby Logan, when Gabby went out. Everybody in our house was shouting "FIX!"

Indeed. The fact that Penny Lancaster's husband was booked as an upcoming musical guest on the results show was probably absolutely definitely not a factor in that particular decision Wink Grin

I'd love it if they re-showed the early series. The dancing was so much more beautiful and conformed to competition standards, the music was much more appropriate and the costumes were AMAZING!

Maireas · 26/11/2020 19:57

I'm enjoying the Pro challenge, but I'm worried about possible vomiting 🤢.
Gio and Ranvir not that intimate, it was a good bit of story telling, as Gio said.

Just read this: Strictly: The Christmas Countdown will take viewers back through the last 16 years of the long-running entertainment series, revealing the most memorable dance routines of all time.

Hooray!

SequinsandStiIettos · 26/11/2020 20:58

Thanks for that. I will of course watch it but I was not impressed by being given limited options to vote for in the first place. The so-called top 25 dances were already given in the poll by the powers that be, so there wasn't free choice and there wasn't much ballroom iirc.
I'd rather have had a free rein even if it meant some poor sod at the Beeb having to crunch the numbers.
I also think this could have been a New Year's Eve special and at Xmas they could have done a look back at all the Xmas specials they've done and winners like The Barrowman, Charlie Brooks, Katie Derham etc But now I sound like Scrooge so am off for a brew Brew
Bah humbug! Wink

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 26/11/2020 23:14

Ooh yes Sequins.

I'm worried they'll only show snippets of the dance too like they've been doing on recent Strictly compilations Angry

I haven't read the top 25 yet - off to click on your link! - but I bet it's a load of gimmicky nonsense from the era of stupid props and naff costumes 🙄

Has the BBC accidentally destroyed the master copies of old Strictly, is that why we're not allowed to see it? ShockGrin

DigOutThoseLemonHandWipes · 26/11/2020 23:42

Do us mere mortals get to vote? As I said earlier I don't vote for ringers bit for a one off retrospective I could show my Danny and Oti love.

ppeatfruit · 27/11/2020 08:19

Ref. Cov infections (sorry I promise no more) . Yes it's the unpredictability that worries me too, but I'm not the paranoid one !

I loved that interview with Joe and Ran on ITT, they are both so intelligent and calm. Oh and people ARE voting for confident women , they vote for her!

But God he turns me on that man Blush Blush Lucky Ranvir !

Clawdy · 27/11/2020 08:37

So is the Christmas special a compilation of the 25 top dances, where there is a public vote for the best on the night? Or is it already decided?

ChessieFL · 27/11/2020 08:41

There’s nothing about any voting in the link that Schaden posted.

BigBadVoodooHat · 27/11/2020 08:42

I suspect it's already decided. And I suspect they're predominantly from the last 6 or seven years, like the 'best of' shows they had on in the run up to this series.

The earlier series have been completely forgotten. So I doubt we'll see excellent dances like Chelsea H's paso doble or Harry Judd's VW Sad

ppeatfruit · 27/11/2020 08:50

Harry Judd wasn't THAT long ago was it BigBad ? He got me into Strictly, was it 6 or 7 years ago?

Agree about the bleedin' snippets of dances they showed recently, why the hell do they think we can't concentrate for more than a minute?

ChessieFL · 27/11/2020 09:05

It was 2011, so 9 years ago.

ppeatfruit · 27/11/2020 09:38

Oh lord Blush thanks Chessie Blush

BigBadVoodooHat · 27/11/2020 10:26

In my head it was about 12 years ago! Grin
BigBadVoodooHat · 27/11/2020 10:28

But going further back, Zoe B's tango seems to have been erased from history Sad

EvilRingahBitch · 27/11/2020 11:00

I think the vote was a while ago - I saw the list via Monkseal’s Twitter but couldn’t vote. Mostly reasonable options as I recall but with a bias towards the more recent, a very limited selection and a couple of weird choices (Aston’s Trolls dance?)

I wonder if they’ve got good enough quality recordings of the early series. I know that sounds mad for a 21st century show, but tellies are so much bigger now, and Strictly, as a live multi camera show which was originally meant as a bit of transient Saturday night fluff, might not have been using the best quality available at the time. That also explains why they wouldn’t have nailed down the music rights for repeats and iPlayer.

If you are in need of a nostalgic buzz there are DVD recordings of some of the live tours. Gives more of a sense of the contestants at the time, though not the week to week narrative throughout the series.

awaynboilyurheid · 27/11/2020 14:39

I hate the snippets of dance You are just saying ooh I remember this lovely dance, when suddenly its back to Anne Widdecombe and your family look at you like youve lost it.

AGnu · 27/11/2020 14:51

What a shame... We're all going to miss him sooo much...

FuzzyPuffling · 27/11/2020 15:38

Oh no, no Bruno.
