Previous thread

I'm not sure 9 pages will last us, so I'm getting prepared a bit early! Check the last thread first before posting here — we might still be over there.

Couples choice seems to be easy points week. It should be dropped.

SequinsandStiIettos · 24/11/2020 20:00

I know it's deemed a bit awkward and shows up weaknesses (Kevin said as much on Twitter) but it's a fallacy that it's a dance-off danger dance (I think similar with samba, it has that reputation, but pretty sure that Monkseal disproved both with his spreadsheet stats!)
Maybe Gio and Ranvir if he wants to ramp up the showmance but not sure she'll look comfortable with it. Bill/Oti will swerve. JJ not sure has the hips. Maisie might be able to do one. HRVY and Janette probably not. They don't have that many weeks left, do they? 4 weeks left including this Saturday?! So, only 2 more original dances after this if final follows usual template?

SequinsandStiIettos · 24/11/2020 20:03

Couple's choice for me is just another freestyle/showdance part i.
But it gives the pros a Sunday off allegedly(?) as they do not need to choreograph. If I were a pro I would have been queuing up for couple's choice, charleston, salsa and smooth this series so I only had to choreo 4 of my own.

Othering · 24/11/2020 20:18

I thought Jamie made a pointed remark on ITT tonight about him and Karen having a genuine connection/friendship, with a definite emphasis on the word genuine. Struck me as being somewhat loaded!

CaveMum · 24/11/2020 20:27

That’s a massive shame if they have ditched the Rumba. It’s a beautiful dance and pretty much the first dance you learn as a beginner. When it’s danced right it is wonderful, but the problem is that Strictly goes in for the cabaret version and keep banging on about it being “sexy” which makes the celebs feel awkward. The Rumba, to me, is not “sexy” it is sensual, which is a big difference.

For a start the “standing still and throwing a series of poses” style they usually employ is so far from the reality.

This is a lovely Rumba made up of only basic steps, but danced well:

covetingthepreciousthings · 24/11/2020 21:25

Have they mentioned anything about Anton and the judging panel this weekend yet...
still holding out hope he will be a 4th judge..

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 24/11/2020 22:01

Can you imagine BvB doing a rumba Grin

DigOutThoseLemonHandWipes · 24/11/2020 22:20

@SequinsandStilettos So, only 2 more original dances after this if final follows usual template?
The last week or maybe two before the final should be two dances each so there will be at least four more dances each (if we include this Saturday).

ConnieLinghurst · 24/11/2020 22:53

Sorry if I've missed it but when is the final?

jambeforeclottedcream · 24/11/2020 22:57

@ThrawnCow

I think they ditched the rumba completely this year, sadly.
Noooo please say this isn't true . I love the rhumba 😢😢
ppeatfruit · 25/11/2020 08:52

Some of you were mentioning Lulu and I can't help remembering her saying in a fairly recent radio interview that she'd "NEVER GROW OLD".

She didn't laugh either Grin Grin I did though !!!!

I'm glad that Zoe isn't coy about her age, I find that and all the botox annoying . What's effing wrong with growing old?? WE ALL DO (surprise). Rant over Blush

ShirleyPhallus · 25/11/2020 08:58

Gutted about ditching the rhumba, it’s one of my favourites. Kara Tointon’s was just beautiful as was Debbie McGee’s. The men always seem a bit crap at it though

IntermittentParps · 25/11/2020 09:00

in fairness, he made an effort with his ballroom more than Tony Beak and his Latin.
Why ' made an effort'? He is a genuine ballroom dancer, isn't he? I remember him saying his favourite dance is the foxtrot.

Lulu is magic though - when she had her first hit she was a couple of years older than my mum she is now a little younger than her so she doesn't age at the same rate as mere mortals.
lynsey91 · 25/11/2020 09:09

Lulu is 72 and looks amazing. I guess she must have had work done but it is good work. She doesn't seem bothered about admitting her age and her hit Shout was in 1964 when she was 15 so that fits

StellaAndCrow · 25/11/2020 09:34

I loved Jay and Aliona's rumba.

Figgygal · 25/11/2020 09:43

@StellaAndCrow yes they were beautiful in that dance - one of my favourites

ChessieFL · 25/11/2020 09:55

Do you think the celebrities get any choice in what style they do for Couples Choice or is it all down to the pro/producers? It seems to me that some of the pros all seem to do the same type of CC e.g. Karen always does street/commercial and Janette always does contempowaft. I wonder if a celeb would be allowed to choose a style that their pro doesn’t like so much.

covetingthepreciousthings · 25/11/2020 10:10

I've wondered this, as it's called couples choice you'd think so, but do they even get to choose the music ?

covetingthepreciousthings · 25/11/2020 10:12

Yes I did too, and Oti & Danny's too.
I don't mind that they've ditched it this year to be honest, I can't imagine any of them except maybe Maisie doing a good one this year.

Though I think BVB would give it a good go Grin

AvengingGerbil · 25/11/2020 11:06

It's a bit of an outlier, but Anton and Katie Derham's rumba is one of my regular re-watches.

covetingthepreciousthings · 25/11/2020 11:17

Did anyone else catch Gio on Good Morning Live this morning? He's so lovely, basically saying he wants to work on getting Ranvir's confidence levels up, (or has been doing). He seems like such a caring partner. He was also saying he wanted to be a dancer so he could spend more time with girls Grin instead of football.

EvilRingahBitch · 25/11/2020 12:31

Colin Jackson’s rumba is still my favourite. Absolutely classic, no gimmicks, danced with real feeling and perfect control.

Jay’s was good though. And Chris Ramsay’s was surprisingly well acted from the neck up.

Apart from that I can take or leave them, even objectively brilliant ones like Kara’s and Rachel Stevens’.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 25/11/2020 12:38

Cherie Lunghi's was another good one.

I'd feel a bit sad if nobody did one, when it's one of the ten competitive dances.

Colin Jackson’s rumba is still my favourite. Mine too. As Arlene said at the time, smooth as silk. It was beautiful.
