I'm a bit worried we'll run out the other thread tonight, and it'll be too fast-paced for me to get a new one going during the show, so I'm getting prepared early!

Feel free to place mark or watch this thread, but head back to the previous thread for the moment, and we can move across later. Glitterball

Well in fairness Artie I think he was only a teacher for a short time. He was injured in Afghanistan at only 24.

I'm not crazy about wearing the uniform on a dance competition though. It feels grossly inappropriate, almost trivialising it. He just didn't need to do any military themed dances that would warrant wearing a uniform in the first place.

It does seem to be his entire identity but he clearly feels he owes the RM everything. He was injured in 2011 but was kept on the payroll until 2016 for a start.

But he seems to have no other personality and I don't think it suits the frothiness of the actual show.

BigBadVoodooHat · 16/11/2020 00:20

I don’t think they’ve mentioned the former occupations of any of the other contestants either, have they? They tend to stick to whatever they’re best known for, and this what JJ is best known for, so why would the rest of his CV be relevant? 🤷‍♀️

CaveMum · 16/11/2020 06:39

He was injured in 2011 but was kept on the payroll until 2016 for a start.

I imagine that will never abuse he was undergoing treatment for his injuries for quite some time. It would be pretty callous to get rid of him whilst he was still undergoing rehab.

BIL was medically discharged from the RM after his hearing was damaged in Afghanistan (MOD at fault) but the whole process took a couple of years from the time of the injury to him actually leaving.

SoupDragon · 16/11/2020 07:36

I didn't know who Davood or Chizzy were either because I don't watch EE, but realise many do.

Clearly. Chizzy was in Holby City, not EE 😂

There have been plenty of people on Strictly that I don't know - all the Coronation Street actors for a start plus the Breakfast TV presenters. I wouldn't have been able to pick them out of a line up before they appeared on Strictly. I wouldn't call any of them "non celebrities" as such though. I suppose "celebrity" is the wrong word though - it's more "people in the public eye".

ppeatfruit · 16/11/2020 08:36

Blimey this thread moves FAST !!!!! Very interesting convo with Motsi on R2 today. She said that she might have saved Max because Maisie's dancing was not consistent and his was, she said that from her view (in her PJs at home !! She's sweet ) and we did'nt see it like they did.

MoonJelly · 16/11/2020 08:40

Usually the first 10 score that someone gets is a bit of an event, frequently after a few weeks of speculation whether this will be the one. By bringing out three so early, I do feel Shirley really devalued it. I know that they don't have the luxury of so much time this series, but I wonder if she felt effectively painted into a corner by having given one to Harvey for what was a fairly lacklustre dance; she could hardly deny the same score to Bill and Clara after that.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 16/11/2020 08:43

I have searched both MN and the inter web, and come to the conclusion that Cavemum's link was the one I was think of - even though he is wearing different clothes and dancing a different dance to the one I remembered so very clearly.

Just don't ever ask me to pick someone out of a police line up, that's all . . . .

Confused

(As a bonus, I've found quite a few youtube clips of older people - well older men - who are amazing dancers)

ppeatfruit · 16/11/2020 09:16

Soup Of course it depends on the 'public' that we're talking about! I also don't watch EE, I used to, it just got sooo effing miserable and violent. Sadly Corrie went the same way so I don't watch that either.. There's enough misery and violence in RL .

I DO listen to The Archers, though that's on a knife edge for me atm., which wouldn't really help if there were dancers from that !!!!!

CaveMum · 16/11/2020 09:43

There are a lot of amazing videos of older men/women dancing AT on the streets in Buenos Aires.

Samcro · 16/11/2020 09:45

i thought it was a shame that max went rather than Maisie. I preferred his dance.

CaveMum · 16/11/2020 09:46

@CaveMum

I apologise for my weird autocorrect in this post 😂

I think “will never abuse” was meant to be “was because” but god only knows why it autocorrected to that! I can only blame it on being 6.30am!

ppeatfruit · 16/11/2020 09:53

I agree with Voodo about the ringahs V newby celebrities. The judges obviously do too because they tend to like to see the "journey' even if it's from someone who only danced in a club. I think the Beeb has the balance right actually.

awaynboilyurheid · 16/11/2020 09:55

I would have preferred Max to stay in as opposed to Maise. I know they both have probably have had stageschool dance training but Max seemed to show more improvement and I thought as Diane said, he was extremely nervous, quite a shy guy I think. Maise is a good dancer but her attitude is a bit too overconfident for me and too I know it all, I just don't get over excited about her dancing. Whereas Bill is not a dancer and I am clapping and shouting at the TV when they are on!

ppeatfruit · 16/11/2020 10:01

Yes Maisie's confidence would have been knocked by Shirley's verdict, which MIGHT improve her or not. She's young so she could just sort of give up like some youngsters do. Or the opposite.

I LOVED Bill and Oti in those outfits. Ranvir and Joe doing an AT !!! I CAN'T WAIT !!!!!

ppeatfruit · 16/11/2020 10:02

Or was it Bill n' Oti? Blush

SoupDragon · 16/11/2020 10:05

Of course it depends on the 'public' that we're talking about!

It was more a distinction between "celebrity" like a pop star and "in the public eye" like a politician. A politician isn't a "celebrity" I don't think. I do generally think they get it right though - I bet they have a tick list or types to go for.

SoupDragon · 16/11/2020 10:06

Maisie was hampered by a shit theme (like so many are! Why do they do it?)

ppeatfruit · 16/11/2020 10:16

Yes Soup What the eff was it meant to be about? DUH to the producers , or whoever thought that one up. The Char char does seem to be a very difficult dance to get right though.

Ranvir seemed most uncomfortable doing it.

CharityDingle · 16/11/2020 10:19

@SoupDragon

Maisie was hampered by a shit theme (like so many are! Why do they do it?)
Yes, that dance was downright weird. I didn't get it at all.
unique1986 · 16/11/2020 11:29

What's with all the CGI ?

DigOutThoseLemonHandWipes · 16/11/2020 11:31

Someone somewhere has confused the idea of a dance telling a story by conveying the emotion with it literally telling a story, which is bad enough without the story being a shitty cartoon spelled out in 8 foot high flashing neon word of only one syllable.

unique1986 · 16/11/2020 11:34

The doll house was wtf.

JamieLeeCurtains · 16/11/2020 11:41

@unique1986

I wondered if it was to cut down on the number of physical props. However, they've gone OTT with it (like they did decades ago when they got new tech on Top of the Pops that would spin a picture around on screen)
wowfudge · 16/11/2020 12:32

Tbf Maisie's theme/story wasn't dissimilar from Coppelia which is a classical ballet.
