SCD '20 #6: Have no fear, Judge Anton's here!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 14/11/2020 17:18

I'm a bit worried we'll run out the other thread tonight, and it'll be too fast-paced for me to get a new one going during the show, so I'm getting prepared early!

Feel free to place mark or watch this thread, but head back to the previous thread for the moment, and we can move across later. Glitterball

Yes, I thought Bill is mainly highly marked because he makes it look easy and he hits his marks on the beat. He's a very cool dude. But his arms arent great at all. I wonder how long the judges are going to ignore it because they're so impressed with him being such a sharp mover at his age.

I'm glad BVB is in the competition because it's like having a Labrador on the show. And it turns out Labradors are fun TV. And he has a lovely bottom. I'll be sad when he's voted out in two weeks time!

Clara is a delight. I loved her whole look, though was very confused how they fit all those braids under her wig? What is this wizardry?

I don't mind Maisie. I mainly appreciate that she is a young girl who looks healthy and robust. Great bum, great thighs. Same as that YouTube girl whose name escapes me last year. This stuff is important when girls their age are bombarded with photoshopped figures on Insta. I doubt if it's part of the selection criteria but I appreciate it none the less.

JJ is the weakest for me. He'll get through just on his uniform alone this week, but he should be in the bottom two. I skipped over the Harry bits. As a non-Brit he's not very interesting to me. Just another celeb zooming in from their LA mansion.

Loved Otis natural hair! She needed to do her eyebrows though. But I hope she shows her natural hair again as I thought she looked more youthful.

MyBonnyLiesOverTheOcean2020 · 15/11/2020 09:33

Really good points about the choreography for Charlston and Couple's Choice being done by other people This should definitely be mentioned on the show, not just Instagram.

MyBonnyLiesOverTheOcean2020 · 15/11/2020 09:35

I must admit that Paul Merton seems very grumpy to me. Before Strictly, Caroline Quentin has always come across brilliantly. She is best mates with Martin Clunes and I think he always comes across as a decent guy.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 15/11/2020 09:36

Remember Carlton?

I certainly do!

"When I won DWTS"

"I danced this in DWTS, a fortnight before I won"

"This was my winning dance on DWTS"

Hmm
gleegeek · 15/11/2020 09:42

Loved the show this week. Anton made a great judge - Len 2.0. Would be happy for him to stay.
Voted JJ, Jamie and Ranvir. JJs dances are just charming, and considering his injuries bloody amazing! Jamie makes me laugh and warm to Karen. I think she's finally enjoying being with him now she knows he's not a complete duffer. Ranvir did the best she could, obviously not going to be a latin girl, but I think it's too soon to go home.
Won't mind if Max, Caroline or Maisie are in the DO, preferably Caroline to go home!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 15/11/2020 09:45

I was thinking that last night and nearly commented it too - a beautiful girl who is a healthy body size (I did comment the same about the youtube last year - I can't remember her name, either - sorry).

Bluffinwithmymuffin · 15/11/2020 09:45

Ellmau
“It ought to be JJ based on dance ability, but I am predicting a Shock Bottom Two...”

... I’ve been thinking same about a shock result this week. Almost certainly Max against someone we think is safe, ie Maisie, nvwls.... Bill, even?

Sheldon
About Anton swallowing Bruno back down - beautifully put. I completely agree. He also seemed to be battling the ghost of Bruce at times- but overall, didn’t he do well?! I was a bit of an Anton sceptic, but I say let’s have him back.

SequinsandStiIettos · 15/11/2020 09:48

If the choreography is done by others. Why is it mentioned by the judges, especially if it's not great. It's not the dancers faults. So why is it taken in consideration when being marked?
I don't know - it annoyed me for ages that Will young's Bollywood salsa got flak when it wasn't Karen's choreo or even theme potentially (As Kev says, they pitch ideas bit it's a two-way street. It's also down to whether slebs object and the message is taken back to production. Others - like Robin, Kristina and Tristan - said much was foisted. Some - Tristan e.g. with his Scream Jackson pitch and Beetlejuice pitch had idea rejected as did Kev with his SB Scott/Fran paso for years til Susan and he forfeited Tomb Raider for Minions).
I imagine there may be some collab with outside choreographers but if you do take a look at the Franzen/Gough side by sides they are identical.
It can work both ways - Brendan got so much kudos for Sophie's Charleston - the first one he'd ever danced on Strictly - but he was not the main choreographer.
I think it's fine to pull up on choreo e.g. Luba on Jason's AS, if they produced it but not on otherwise. But I also think if the choreo is weak or the theme is rubbish or the music is inappropriate - it should not reflect on what you score you give the sleb.

Ellmau · 15/11/2020 09:51

I hadn't really considered Max as a danceoffer, bc I quite liked his dance, but now that I think about it he was low on the leaderboard, and does come across as a bit dull personality wise, so that's a possibility.

I think Bill's likely to be safe bc he was 3rd on the leaderboard, and would have to get very few votes to be in the danger zone.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 15/11/2020 09:52
Anyway, back to the dancing!

I roll this video out every year but THIS is what Salsa should look like. Salsa is a “club dance”, it’s meant to be danced in a hot, sweaty, crowded nightclub so you contain your moves. There are no lifts, no exuberant gesticulating, just smooth and constantly rotating around your partner. What they dance on Strictly (and the same applies to many of the other dances) is an exaggerated “cabaret” version of the style and if you joined a salsa class thinking you’ll learn a Strictly style routine you’d be very disappointed!
Really enjoyed this - thank you! (And to others who have posted clips)

A couple of years ago someone posted a tango clip (I'm pretty sure it was street tango, but couldn't put money on it). The male dancer was an overweight middle-aged man - but hell's bells! He was sex on legs in that dance! I've never been able to find it again.

Apparently he was a professional dancer in his youth, but even so - absolutely a joy to watch.

It was Saffron

SchadenfreudePersonified · 15/11/2020 10:00

Thank you Bluffin

I should have looked her up - it was discourteous not to, really.

I'm not a great one for "influencers" etc, but I do like to see someone who is a good role model with regard to body image.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 15/11/2020 10:02

But I also think if the choreo is weak or the theme is rubbish or the music is inappropriate - it should not reflect on what you score you give the sleb.

I'd love to hear a judge say "XXX - however you did as much as could be expected with the totally inappropriate music and were let down by the choreography, so my mark will reflect that."

jambeforeclottedcream · 15/11/2020 10:02

It reminds me a bit of Stars in Their Eyes, when You used to vote and Matthew Kelly would say " please vote on what they sound like, not what they look like"

I.e don't vote for what the professionals behind the scenes have done

the80sweregreat · 15/11/2020 10:07

Anton dropped the silliness after the first dance and became a grown up!
I don't mind him.

CharityDingle · 15/11/2020 10:11

Thought Anton did a great job. Okay, some overmarking – but not as much as Shirley. Good combination of kindly worded, interesting criticism and praise. Definitely deserves a longer slot.

I agree.

GrouchyKiwi · 15/11/2020 10:17

@ThursdayLastWeek

I do not get all the Maisie hate on here! It seems very unfair to claim Shirley is not very sisterhood and then go on to criticise a confident young woman for being a confident young woman. And claiming CQ has somehow broken Johannes? I just don’t see that at all, feel like I’m watching something totally different.

Anyways, aside from that I thought Anton was a very fair judge although he seemed to be kissing ass with the pros a bit.

I also thought Bill and Otis routine was great, but I didn’t think it was as sharp as it should have been? Even when they showed the best bit, it seemed like his footwork was a bit out of sync. Which of course doesn’t effect the feel of the dance at all, but makes it difficult to accept 10s.

BVB will never get my vote no matter how charming he seems. That mans got enough privilege IMO Grin

Clara was great, tho agree with a PP that she definitely seemed to tire towards the end. Not that I can blame her, it was a packed routine!

Yes. I feel like that about Maisie and Caroline too, Thursday.

And also about Bill. It was a cool dance, but not worth 10s (I don't think any of the 10s were deserved last night).

SoupDragon · 15/11/2020 10:31

Clara is a delight. I loved her whole look, though was very confused how they fit all those braids under her wig? What is this wizardry?

Chances are those braids are fake/a wig. You saw Motsi's natural hair on her video clip for example.

SoupDragon · 15/11/2020 10:31

And claiming CQ has somehow broken Johannes? I just don’t see that at all, feel like I’m watching something totally different.

Me too.

derxa · 15/11/2020 10:54

CQ was very annoying in Jonathan Creek. She was always talking while eating. Don't know why that's so annoying to me but there you go.

lynsey91 · 15/11/2020 10:55

I would love to see Anton as a permanent judge. He should have been given the chance ages ago.

I so preferred him to Motsi. I thought she was a breath of fresh air when she first started but now she just annoys me so much. She is much more annoying than Bruno who at least gives some advice and criticism.

She talks (well shouts) absolute inane rubbish most of the time.

JamminDoughnuts · 15/11/2020 11:01

just rewatching, i dont think Max was too anti his wife, he was just nervous i think and perhaps aware he had sworn

EvilRingahBitch · 15/11/2020 11:03

I enjoyed CQ’s character in Jonathan Creek. Rather than being the classic “sensible woman who disapproves of the entertainingly flawed male protagonist” (see Men Behaving Badly eg) they were both very flawed in opposite directions.

Refreshing to see a woman character who’s realistically (but not pathologically) slobby.

SoupDragon · 15/11/2020 11:28

You mean her character was very annoying...?
BigBadVoodooHat · 15/11/2020 11:40

I would love to see Anton as a permanent judge. He should have been given the chance ages ago.

And he might have been given the chance ages ago, were it not for his comment to Laila Rouass.
