SCD '20 #6: Have no fear, Judge Anton's here!

I'm a bit worried we'll run out the other thread tonight, and it'll be too fast-paced for me to get a new one going during the show, so I'm getting prepared early!

Feel free to place mark or watch this thread, but head back to the previous thread for the moment, and we can move across later. Glitterball

They were indeed! I would love to go back and relive them, the80sweregreat!

the80sweregreat · 14/11/2020 22:07

Me too! ( some of it anyway!)
Fingers crossed Caroline does go this week! ..

wowfudge · 14/11/2020 22:11

I think people warmed to Karen when she ditched KFG.

EvilRingahBitch · 14/11/2020 22:12

Coming in late, just to say that I’m so pleased that Clara pulled it out of the bag - I will always root for whoever is dancing with Aljaz because I just love to see him dance and having fun. He was absolutely knackered after that Charleston - it was properly full-on.

I think I would have enjoyed Bill’s dance if it wasn’t for GrouchyKiwi reminding me of Charles and Karen doing an almost identical routine much better - the guest choreographers have obviously only got so many tricks up their sleeves.

BVB, shockingly for a man who makes his living being spontaneous and likeable on the telly, is coming across as spontaneous and likeable Confused.

KamalaVP · 14/11/2020 22:14

Loved this evening’s show. Agree Anton was a bit generous but he made a good judge. In any case, Shirley gave more tens.

Love Bill and Oti. Also Clara and Aljaz.

Agree with others about Caroline. Her dancing isn’t that bad but I thought I’d warm to her and haven’t.

EvilRingahBitch · 14/11/2020 22:16

To be fair it’s not really identical to Bill’s but it’s got so much in common that it’s hard not to compare them, and the comparison doesn’t do Bill any favours.

wowfudge. Mebbes right there ...

evilringah. Good point - well presented! Wink.

stillsomewhatsheldonesque · 14/11/2020 22:22

Oops - posted too soon!

But I still love Bill more Wink

Clawdy · 14/11/2020 22:26

Liked Anton as judge, hope he stays.

CaveMum · 14/11/2020 22:27

sheldon DH is ex-RAF (out less than a year) and BIL is ex-RM so I’ve heard (and seen!) plenty of the tales of “interesting outfits”, as well as the, er, lack thereof 😜

Fontella · 14/11/2020 22:30

I thought Anton did really well on the judging.

First couple of comments he was a little nervous (understandably - it must be incredibly daunting) but once he settled in he was fine. I thought he filled the void that Len left. Shirley obviously has the dancing experience to critique on a technical level, but she does get a bit carried away sometimes. Anton has that more down to earth Len-like quality, and I personally, much preferred it to Oti's almost meaningless comments. She's a nice enough woman but I just don't feel she brings anything to the judging panel. If I had a choice, I'd go for Anton.

And as for the dancers - Bill is just a revelation. Yes, he's a musician but his timing, his moves, his lightness of feet are just so enjoyable to watch. I didn't have a lot of interest in this series if I'm honest, but he's the one whose kept me watching.

I can see there's not a lot of Caroline love on this thread, but I like her. I think she's a good dancer with a lot of potential but at the moment she's far too 'ballet school' with the pointed toes, and everything perfectly placed and I absolutely agree with the judges. If she could just let go, let rip and go for it, she could be great. But at the moment it's too neat, placed and precise. I can see what they mean, but she doesn't seem to be able to grasp what they mean, and unless she does, then she's going to be leaving the competition early.

CaveMum · 14/11/2020 22:33

Anyway, back to the dancing!

I roll this video out every year but THIS is what Salsa should look like. Salsa is a “club dance”, it’s meant to be danced in a hot, sweaty, crowded nightclub so you contain your moves. There are no lifts, no exuberant gesticulating, just smooth and constantly rotating around your partner. What they dance on Strictly (and the same applies to many of the other dances) is an exaggerated “cabaret” version of the style and if you joined a salsa class thinking you’ll learn a Strictly style routine you’d be very disappointed!

stillsomewhatsheldonesque · 14/11/2020 22:43

Oh I love that cavemum. You can just imagine all that in a hot, sultry, packed club. Lovely stuff.

Sadly I must have left my rhythm somewhere (when I peeled off my pvc) and so I can only admire from afar! 😉

CaveMum · 14/11/2020 22:52

There are many, many similar videos on YouTube sheldon, if you search “street salsa” you can get lost for hours watching ordinary people on the streets of Havana and the like just doing their thing!

EvilRingahBitch · 14/11/2020 22:54

I forgot to say - I was dreading Anton, but I thought he was rather good. However if he was going to be doing the job permanently he’d have to tone down the “I’m performatively shit at Latin so am affecting to be super impressed by anyone who’s half-decent at it” shtick.

On the subject of Salsa - for the benefit of slightly newer viewers here is the official Only Real Salsa Ever To Be Performed On Strictly TM.

stillsomewhatsheldonesque · 14/11/2020 22:55

I will have a spot of that when I’m prepping the meal for the folks tomorrow.

I am envious of folk who can dance with gay abandon. More so when they look fabulous doing so. You really don’t need sequins and tricks. Smile

ElspethFlashman · 14/11/2020 23:10

I was quite amused by his "I hate Latin" bits. Like finally he can admit it! Grin

I'm another who didn't miss Motsi. But I was never a big fan of her as a Judge. Nice lady, looks amazing, but too shouty by far.

I knew Anton wouldn't critique much. Guest judges don't. Remember Carlton? They're just there to be supportive and upbeat and keep the seat warm.

So within those limitations I thought he did a nice job. He made them feel good about themselves and pointed out some good technique.

PawFives · 14/11/2020 23:11

Enjoyed tonight’s show, much better than last week. Bill and Clara were my favourites. Ranvir was a bit self conscious but I think will go through, hope she does. Maisie was good as always, and is getting less annoying as time goes on but I didn’t like the dance, but then I don’t like the cha cha cha it’s a bit boring. No Vowels was good but overshadowed a bit by Janette who was really dancing properly (love it when the pros do that). Think dance off could be Max as it was a bit meh, possibly JJ if he doesn’t get through on the military vote, Caroline elegant but samey and she’s really hard work isn’t she. Going against the grain a bit but I’m not keen on Jamie, he seems really overmarked and very much surface charm.
Thought Anton did OK judging, he seemed to really fit in. Wouldn’t mind if they gave him the gig full time.

merryhouse · 14/11/2020 23:21

I just wish Caroline would bend a bit more (I say this every week, you'd think she'd have listened by now).

When she turns away from J and spreads out her arm - the arm is beautiful, but the body doesn't follow.

It's probably not the only thing lacking, but if she doesn't fix it she'll never be right.

I completely agree. Her legs and arms/hands are lovely. But the body in between the limbs is so rigid.

Also on another forum someone has pointed out that Caroline is wearing higher heels than most of the dancers and this is also affecting her placement/ rigidity. I haven't noticed this myself (not saying it's incorrect of course) and if she is wearing higher heels than the others, I'm not quite sure why because it's not as Johannes is towering over her (see pic) maybe four/five inches at most?

She's got the timing, the moves and the ballet training (which is apparent). What she hasn't got is the 'go for it' factor. Just forgetting how nicely placed her hands and toes are, but just actually dancing with a bit of 'what the hell'.

Really enjoyed tonight's show. Loved Anton as a judge. I'm not a big fan of Motsi.

[/quote] Meh, it's OK but it would be SOOOOO much better if they were dressed as cartoon 🌵 in sombreros and dancing to a grime song to bring in the good vote. 😉

*Good? Yoof. Damn you auto correct.

melj1213 · 15/11/2020 00:29

Looks like I'm going to have to catch up tomorrow, as Saturdays show still isn't up on iPlayer

Is it just me or is the Saturday night upload getting later? I finish work at 10pm and for the first couple of weeks by the time I got home it was already available on iPlayer but last week it was after 11pm when it was uploaded and tonight it's still not up ... all I get when I go on iPlayer is it greyed out because it's not available yet :(

ScienceSensibility · 15/11/2020 01:45

Well, I thought that was a great show tonight, the best of the series so far.

Rid of stupid Movie Week themes we had a great selection of dances, mainly to authentic music, and look how the dancers responded!

I couldn’t be more thrilled for Clara and Aljaz. I think she is sensational and I’m so pleased she got the opportunity to show it in a truly authentic Charleston.

Dance off tomorrow? Maybe JJ and Max? I wouldn’t be troubled if Max left.

Wasn’t it nice of Meghan Markle to give Harry a pass to talk to his friend? 😀
