Really???

Ugly house to uglier house. That design was shocking!

A lot of money spent for not a great result. And the gravel garden? Definitely not for me, and I like a lot of modern architecture.

GoodbyeToCare · 22/10/2020 21:08

The black paint was awful, made the house look so oppressive.

pinkbowl · 22/10/2020 21:24

I thought I was alone. Thank you for starting this thread.
I wondered if I hated it because it was soooooo masculine. But I have decided I hated it because it was just soooooooo bloody ugly.
And how much??

pinkbowl · 22/10/2020 21:28

I decided that I definitely hated it when I saw the steps that led you down into the horrid extention. It made me think of the back bit of glamorous hotels. The bits you, as guests, aren't ever meant to see.

LimeJellyforBrains · 22/10/2020 21:32

I just saw the end of the programme on C4 - couldn't believe my eyes! Was it finished? Was that monstrosity "it"?

Switched to C4+1 to watch what happened. The first thing I noticed was that the plan didn't address the two main problems that George highlighted - the narrow hallway and the sloping ceilings in the bedrooms.

Flaunch · 22/10/2020 21:37

Loved the extension inside but the inside of the old house and the exterior were truly awful. That hallway was an absolute eyesore.

ShortAndSharp · 22/10/2020 21:38

It made me think of Beetlejuice.

Twinkie01 · 22/10/2020 21:40

Was good old George patting himself on the back again?

JoJoSM2 · 22/10/2020 21:43

I also liked the extension. But the original bit and especially the black exterior was beyond hideous.

StanfordPines · 22/10/2020 21:43

Is this a new series?

ApolloandDaphne · 22/10/2020 21:44

I hated it. Not a big fan of poured concrete.

LeaveMyDamnJam · 22/10/2020 21:45

I liked it.

KenDoddsDad · 22/10/2020 21:46

I am still in shock, I think! The old handrail up the stairs, simply painted over...it made it look like an old bedsit. The black exterior paint over the old brickwork detailing...why?! It needed re-rendering to get away with that paint job.

I admire their lovely open-minded attitude and they were seemingly calm throughout, but it really wasn’t for me.

happinessischocolate · 22/10/2020 21:58

Watching it now, it reminds my of a youth club from the 70s where there tried to jazz it up abit with some MDF and leftover paint.

Then I saw the outside, yep def a youth club

OooErrThor · 22/10/2020 22:12

It was the stairs that got me, maybe it's my age but I thought they were an accident waiting to happen.

Really oppressive hallway and yes, the bedrooms still had the restrictive headroom.

Honeyroar · 22/10/2020 22:16

They couldn’t have made the house any more ugly. Can’t believe they spent so much money on it! I bet the neighbours are devastated. We have neighbours that have built something as ugly and modern across the field from our 350 year old stone cottage. We hate it!

MoreHairyThanScary · 22/10/2020 22:49

Agree with the above.... not sure if I missed something making sure kids were asleep but did they explain why it took so very long I saw the board for the roof being removed then lots of comments of how difficult the build was but it didn't explain the lost 2 years!

The frontage was hideous, and the gravel around the rear just screamed run out of money.

Not been impressed with any of them so far this series....loved the idea for this one but the execution didn't sit well with general living... more for architects to win awards, ( did like the little black mezzanine / house structure internally)

Flaunch · 22/10/2020 22:52

They’ve had done better to knock the original house down and start from scratch.

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 23/10/2020 11:12

I was disappointed that they left the original staircase and hallway in situ, it really let the house down. If you're going to spend £250k on a massive project you want to walk in the front door and say "wow".

thenightsky · 23/10/2020 12:17

I thought their main gripe with the old house was the very narrow and very dark hallway. So why the hell did they leave it as it was AND paint it black to make it even darker?? And that dangerous, slippy metal staircase screamed 'broken hip' to me.

I said to DH, I'd have fucking sued the bastard architects for that monstrosity. I don't know how George found anything positive to say really.

Knittedfairies · 23/10/2020 12:38

I'm pleased to see I'm not alone! What was the big black box thing on two pillars over the dining table?

Jaxhog · 23/10/2020 12:43

Oh No! Now I just have to watch it.

Isolatedizzy · 23/10/2020 12:43

The poor neighbours! Imagine looking at that everyday from your back garden!

I also thought they just seemed to ignore the original bit of house and just stuck a new one on the end! What happened to the dining room?

justgeton · 23/10/2020 12:45

How did they ever get planning permission for such a monstrosity??

I'm usually left with a bad case of house envy at the end but that was just hideous.

icelolly99 · 23/10/2020 20:23

Is this a new series or repeats? I thought I'd watched them all but none of this thread is ringing any bells....
