Not what I would normally watch but I'm hooked. Dh made me watch The Karate Kid to fully appreciate it.
Ralph Macchio hasn't aged well but the guy who plays Johnny Lawrence is lovely. It's fabulously cheesy.

I love the hashbrown comment #

Love it! A real bit of 80s nostalgia with the original characters still being in it. Done season 1 so far and looking forward to season 2.

One thing - has anyone else noticed the amount of drink driving that goes on? Nearly every episode - even Danny in Series 1.

Is it not such a taboo over there?

Someonesayroadtrip · 13/09/2020 21:59

Yes, we loved it. Binge watched it all. Not normally my thing at all, my husband watched the firs episode when it was on YouTube prime but were weren't prepared to pay to watch the rest, so we're really happy when it came out.

It's super frustrating but so addictive!

Except, no one ever seems to be sober there. I mean I know the laws are a lot more lax and people can drink considerably more before being "over" the limit there, but they seem to drink themselves silly and not be able to walk straight yet drive home and no one bats an eye.

jay55 · 13/09/2020 22:48

It was terrible, I loved it and the soundtrack was incredible.

goldensummerhouse · 17/09/2020 00:19

It is a cheesefest but it was a lot of fun. I think both male leads aged about equally, but Ralph Macchio had very young looks which doesn't translate well, he looks like a middle aged teenager. He definitely doesn't look like he's in his mid fifties though.

My only gripe with the show (aside from my issue that if characters took the time to have a ten second conversation it could save them from a lot of fights) is that Johnny got the Joey Tribbiani treatment, and is dumber now than he was in the 80s. It seems like it would be almost impossible to miss out on every technological advance since the end of the eighties without being in a coma!

My beer loving BIL tells me Coors only recently changed the name of their Coors Banquet beer to something else. And Johnny seems to mention it every other epsiode. What a PR fail...

@jay55
I play the soundtrack in my carGrin

KellyMarieTunstall2 · 17/09/2020 23:35

It's an 80s cheese fest and we love it!!

Madhairday · 17/09/2020 23:42

We're loving it. DH made me watch it and I was dubious but I love it, cheese and all, and we've been researching the Karate Kid films (part 3 this weekend🤣)

I love the eighties references, the soundtrack and just everything about it, really. Johnny's lack of knowledge about modern life is somewhat stretched but quite fun. I think Ralph Macchio looks pretty good.

Madhairday · 17/09/2020 23:43

Rewatching, not researching, though I guess it could be called research if we're that invested in the show (which we are) Grin

bandit34 · 18/09/2020 14:31

IslaMann · 18/09/2020 16:43

I loved it! Def TeamJonny here - Daniel has turned into a proper twat!
So excited to learn there will be a season 3.

Lemonsaretheonlyfruit · 23/09/2020 16:09

Hi. My 10/ 11 year old DS wants to watch this (I watched the first episode of season 1 with him) but reading ahead it gets quite old? I was wondering if most of the sexual references might wash over him (is they were talking about hand jobs in the first episode and he wouldn't have had a clue).. or am I being naive.

Asking a bit selfishly as I really want to watch it with him as it seems great and I have struggled to find anything decent to watch together since Alex rider. Thanks!

sunshineandshowers21 · 23/09/2020 16:16

i’ve never seen any of the karate kid films but i went to my mum’s yesterday and she was watching this and i ended up sitting and watching three episodes with her 😂 i went home and spent the night watching the films so i’m starting the series tonight.

CherryValanc · 23/09/2020 16:33

Absolutely loved it! The entire family was hooked.

Can't believe Ralph Macchio is 59 - he looks amazing for his age. Though it would have been decent if they cast a woman a similar age - but that would be asking way too much of the industry.

Johnny's friend, Tommy, who died was the one who shouted "Get him a body bag!" in Karate Kid, (apparently an ad lib) was played by Rob Garrison who sadly died just a few months after filming Cobra Kai. Rob Garrison was in Iron Eagle, which is, in Cobra Kai, Johnny's favourite movie.

Oblomov20 · 23/09/2020 16:37

Sorry, but when is cobra Kai on? Which channel? Netflix? Sky?

I am a massive massive karate kid fan, and have been waiting a long time for cobra Kai!
