I know, I wonder if anyone will get sacked? It could be the same person for a couple of those?

Catcheronthesly · 07/04/2021 12:20

Also I hope that isn’t classed as a spoiler because it mentions a future character?????

SleepingStandingUp · 07/04/2021 13:03

I'm going to hang my gavel and say no, there's no details of her storyline etc anyway.

I think it's always a bit uncomfortable when they say "a white female" etc then then you're forever wondering which person is the racist one? But can understand why she wouldn't want to say it was X
Has anyone seen this? www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-australia-56652191
So disappointing, isn't it. They make a lot of noise about being inclusive and "everyone is welcome on Ramsey Street" - clearly a lot of learning and change to come.

SleepingStandingUp · 07/04/2021 13:25

She also says she had to help them rewrite the recent scripts about "change the date" so wonder what it was like to start with?

OP posts:
NemesiaPinkLagoon · 07/04/2021 13:47

Oh I didn't realise that. Maybe it was her idea to include that storyline?

SleepingStandingUp · 07/04/2021 13:53

It's unclear, just said she helped rewrite it but didn't get any writing credits. And the woman who used the n word had mandatory training and was stepped back a week to undergo it so it's possible it'll be obvious if someone goes on holiday for a week mid tenure or just after but 🤷

OP posts:
Catcheronthesly · 07/04/2021 17:17

I don’t think it’ll be obvious if someone is off for a week, they’ll just film scenes in a different order.
I’ve always thought it’s odd that overall it’s been a very white cast and Australia has a lot more diversity than is shown. I wonder if the actress who played Audrey recently has said anything?

SleepingStandingUp · 07/04/2021 18:51

And the lady who was the judge of the food contest? There's Def been a sudden spate of First Nation actresses

Really liking the shoxy 😂

Neighbours has always been majority white. Hone and away is more diverse imo.

Clawdy · 08/04/2021 21:33

Shoxy were hilarious tonight! Bet they loved doing those scenes.

MiddleClassProblem · 09/04/2021 11:41

Lost you guys!

The racism doesn’t surprise me. Australia still is quite behind. I can remember The Last Leg doing a tour show over there a few years ago and going to a pub that had a sign saying aboriginal people weren’t allowed in. The big cities are diverse but still a little behind the times in feminism and racism terms. I have family (Indian) in Sydney and the casual racism is more like it was in the late 00s here. A lot of it under the ‘banter’ framing. They don’t object just like I didn’t used to. If he stuff you used to laugh off that now you feel rage for.

O notice working in TV that because the top isn’t diverse, they don’t really understand the issues or relevance of certain stories. The last production company I worked at is seen as a great one to work for here and seen as progressive because they are adding women to the Exec Prods but they are all white. And the top are three white men in theirs 50s/60s.
I love working there but there’s little acceptance of things that are important to people of other races that they don’t understand because they simply have no experience of it.

Do you think? I can't think of any long term non-white characters, Leah's ex, the Priest?? They're Def not as diverse re sexualities, Home and Away hasn't I don't think ever had a long term character who is gay?
OP posts:
Rummikub · 10/04/2021 00:18

I think it might be my perception as I thought H&A had cast infugineous actors previously. And willow who is Sri Lankan.
(Trying to remember now previous characters ..)

SleepingStandingUp · 10/04/2021 04:33

I'm sure there's diversity, or Kat who is Chillean, the gay lad Max and John fostered etc but I was thinking an "obvious" non-white family like Dipi and her family, and the recent spate of indigenous women. Home and Away have the lovely Maori boys (except Ari is being a cad and it makes me sad). They could both do with a dose of diversity!

OP posts:
Rummikub · 10/04/2021 11:32

Shane and Dipi were a good addition as a mixed race couple. Usually on tv there isn’t any mixing of races. Or there wasn’t for decades, changing a bit nowadays.

SleepingStandingUp · 10/04/2021 11:57

Absolutely, and despite the kids being dual heritage they recruited clearly Asian children. I hadn't realised until recently what a large Asian population Aus has - because most of my awareness is from Soaps.

The cynic in me wonders if they thought mixed into an established and loved family would be more palatable to viewers than a clearly Asian, Islamic or Hindu family.

Priya had an affair with Paul. She was unlikeable and was the principal at the school. I think it was when Susan was at the newspaper.

She died at Sonya’s wedding.

Ajay was her husband. He was nice, played the drums in Karl’s band.

They had a daughter who was a bit meh. I think she went out with Zeke but they were really young. I think she was just a bit bland, nerdy, well behaved, quiet voice.

SleepingStandingUp · 10/04/2021 12:49

Ah yeah I Def didn't watch it at the wedding era.

Was just coming to say the same, Sharan Johal has now put our a v long statement saying she experienced racism from previous and existing cast members as well as bad treatment from people she worked most closely with

OP posts:
Rummikub · 14/04/2021 13:52

Now that makes me upset.
It’s my escapism and Now it feels tarnished.

That article was a shocking read.

It’s either a culture of accepting racism on set or it’s a long standing member.

I didn’t think Endemol’s statement was strong enough.
