What do you think?

Hope I look as good as Marc Warren when I get to 53!

puffinandkoala · 26/04/2020 22:12

It was ok. It's a long time since I watched the original version.

Anyway it kept me occupied for two hours and I don't have the greatest of attention spans, and don't watch much TV so it must have been ok! Silly ending though (not the last bit on the boat, the reason for the murders).

I used to love the old theme tune. I was really cross when I read last week they'd not kept it but I see they did keep a ghost of it in the updated version. When I was about 5 I taught myself to play it on a little two octave organ with six chord buttons! It's a pity my musical talent never really developed beyond that Grin

Bringmewineandcake · 26/04/2020 22:13

I got a bit bored but stuck with it to the end.

EngagedAgain · 26/04/2020 22:42

I found it a bit boring, but that's because I'm not really interested in that type of thing anyway, but OH wanted to watch it. Also the ad breaks are annoying, and I find any programme longer than an hour with ads is too much.

FadedRed · 26/04/2020 22:49

Recorded it and watched it later, fast-forwarding the advertisements. Thought it was slow, especially the first half, but overall think it had potential for a decent series. Made a nice (?) change for the murder victims to be men and not the usual default ‘attractive young women’ iykwim.

Chillipeanuts · 26/04/2020 22:54

Was looking forward to it but it just didn’t engage me, felt a bit ”stagey” (her, hands on hips all the time, him, hands in pockets all the time. Bit too ‘directed’. Liked the pathologist though.

quietheart · 27/04/2020 02:31

Ah yes I settled down waiting for the theme tune and was disappointed with just a whisper.

Notonthestairs · 27/04/2020 08:19

Amsterdam looked amazing. Brilliant to film inside the Rijksmuseum - I've always wanted to go.

I hoped that I'd love it but didn't. Found the lead character quite annoying. Not sure whether I will watch again.

lazymum99 · 27/04/2020 08:39

I also watched for the memories of 1973 and the theme tune (eye level). I taught myself on the piano too! I could just about hear it in the background. Nice to see Amsterdam and will definitely visit after this kerfuffle.
Does anyone remember the lager ad:
Oranjeboom oranjeboom it’s a lager not a tune......

stumbledin · 27/04/2020 14:14

It was pathetic. Makes Death in Paradise look sophisticated.

I think they thought they were being clever, but actually it was just boring adolescent male dross.

But - one day I must go to Amsterdam!

CoolCarrie · 27/04/2020 15:19

Amsterdam is the star of this , worth watching for the scenery.

We went there and Utrecht a couple of years ago. Highly recommend visiting both , in Utrecht, we went to a candlelight service at the church which was incredibly moving , beautiful singing and nice people.

The Van Gogh museum is stunning, no screaming at the paintings, unlike one person ( Sistine chapel) on MN, but it is moving to see his paintings in real life, there is a Banksy/ Dali gallery very close by.
The Rijks museum is huge , and the day we went there was a crowd of about 100 in front of The Night Watch, so we looked at everything else except that paintings, the dolls houses are beautiful and fascinating.

stumbledin · 27/04/2020 18:56

I think I am always surprised when I see pictures on tv because somehow in my mind when I think Amsterdam I just think of those terrible images of women posting half naked in shop windows. Sad

I think there is meant to be a direct Eurostar connection so easier to go and feel green.

Ellmau · 27/04/2020 23:30

Marc Warren is hot.

Overall it was so-so plotwise, and it didin’t really feel very Dutch.

I liked the dog, and loved the dog treats line.

Will try next week.

MyOtherProfile · 28/04/2020 07:20

Love Amsterdam and have done memories of VdV from when I was small not that I can actually remember anything about it except for the music and the lead actor but this was so dull and the lead character so disappointing that we switched off after half an hour. Mark thingy may be amazing for 53 but his character had no appeal.

missclimpson · 28/04/2020 07:27

We bought the DVDs of the original. It was entertaining in a nostalgic sort of way but more than a bit patchy. Most surprising was that his wife changed radically about three times and he didn't seem to notice. Not much of a detective. 😂
I watched the new one, but where was Arlette?

MyOtherProfile · 28/04/2020 07:31

I loved the setting, didn't like him. He got on my nerves being so rude and miserable so I turned it off.

RaraRachael · 28/04/2020 10:22

I tried to watch an episode from the original series but found it very dull and dated.
The new version was ok - a bit slow and I can't forgive them for getting rid of the theme music!

I didn't engage with the lead character so not sure if I'll stick with it or not. Two hours is very long if you don't record it and whiz through the adverts.

Ellmau · 28/04/2020 11:16

It seemed a bit generic cop drama, really.

stumbledin · 28/04/2020 13:13

A bit like Inspector Linley (spelling) who I think had 4 wives.

I suspect actresses curse when they are offered the long suffering wife of a lead detective. Probably take it in the hope of moving on to better things.

Which seems for at least 6 or 7 actresses it did!

ConstancetheGardener · 28/04/2020 15:53

Mark Warren is very well preserved , looks like the love child of Sting and Malcom McDowell .Shame the programme turned out to be a bit generic but at least the scenery aound Amsterdam was nice .

IamJackFmsmysterywoman · 28/04/2020 16:03

I liked it. Agree that it started very slowly and the political storyline was a tad boring for me, but I think they have set the lead characters up enough to catch my interest to want to see how it develops.
Not a popular opinion but I hated the original theme tune to VdV- this is much better. I like the little wafty notes of the original, a clever nod.
A little nugget for Marc Warren fans. I have seen him in my local Tesco, he is tiny but perfectly formed and I always know when he is about to start filming as he jogs around the village which is very hilly. He looks absolutely knackered , bless him.

BurtonHouse · 28/04/2020 19:42

Nice to see Marc Warren not playing a baddy for a change.
I quite liked it, but spent most of it thinking " I recognise that bridge" and "I'm sure we went in that bar".

Elderflower14 · 28/04/2020 20:17

I'm starting to fancy Marc Warren. I agree it's nice to see him being a goodie.. Weird that most of them sounded English.

pointythings · 28/04/2020 20:45

I am watching it on Hub, quite enjoying the political setting. Very topical, clearly aimed at Thierry Baudet and his party.

ppeatfruit · 29/04/2020 09:28

Thinking back I LOVED the old theme tune. DM did too.

Amsterdam is the star of this. I liked some of it (I hate the violence though) It got too dark for me when the young woman policeperson got stabbed, she made a remarkably lucky recovery didn't she,? She was obviously in love with yer man I liked her misery too, VDV and her got less miserable as it continued.

The coffee barperson was a good actress, interesting that they dtd (naughty VDV Grin ) The newbie assistant was cute!
