What do you think?

Hope I look as good as Marc Warren when I get to 53!

OP posts:
rookiemere · 02/05/2020 09:00

ppeat yes I thought that was the case with the accents, but it is illogical so it annoys me Wink!

ppeatfruit · 02/05/2020 09:11

Well it is, but better than forcing the Brits to speak\act with Dutch accents!! (that never sounds natural). I don't know if the actors who were the baddies were Dutch!

SophieB100 · 03/05/2020 09:16

I enjoyed it.
I like MW, loved him in Hustle.
I'll keep watching it.

ppeatfruit · 03/05/2020 09:30

So I watched the repeat of the REAL VDV on Talking Pictures. It's pure social history!!!Worth watching for that alone, I was 20 at the time and can vouch for everything that looks extreme ,like the fashions, the weird language of the hippie types I'm not so sure about because I wasn't a real hippie ( all of us youngsters looked a bit hippyish then) Grin

What was lovely was that there was NO in yer face violence. only one death.

IMO there's far too much heavy handed violence now, it doesn't help with the DV rates , it makes it acceptable to ignorant types.

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/05/2020 16:16

Just downloaded 2

think 2 on tonight

Are they separate stories

Haven’t read thread as didn’t want any spoilers

Gemma2019 · 03/05/2020 16:51

It's only a 3 part series - separate stories but a general theme and link.

cologne4711 · 04/05/2020 11:52

The actress who played the barmaid was getting her wicked way with Endeavour a few weeks ago.

I wasn't keen on yesterday's, I missed a lot of the dialogue because it was mumbled and the young detective (not the geeky one, the other one) is a pain.

ppeatfruit · 04/05/2020 12:59

cologne I know exactly what you mean about the mumbling. There are sooo many dramas etc. that contain actors who mumble and music that's too loud, meaning we have to turn down the volume for the music and turn it up for the dialogue, it's infuriating I don't want to go deaf watching the bleedin' telly Grin DH doesn't care and he's already having hearing issues!

IamJackFmsmysterywoman · 04/05/2020 20:35

Interesting. I thought it was just me “cracking on a bit“ but I found it very mumbly too.
I did enjoy it but found it a little difficult to follow at times and couldn’t seem to get to grips with the nun who liked medieval erotica and kissing young ladies in the library. That led me into a whole rabbit warren when I should have been concentrating on the storyline !!!
I was quite bothered about how miserable they have made VdV- made for uncomfortable viewing and certainly denied me the ability to feel any warmth or empathy with his character. I will persevere.

RaraRachael · 05/05/2020 07:31

Wasn't keen on this week's episode. K kept having to ask OP questions which is a sure sign the plot is too complicated for my understanding.
Even after he explained it all I was still a bit lost Confused

ppeatfruit · 05/05/2020 09:22

Watch the REAL VAN D VALK it's great, on Talking Pictures!! I'm recording it.

I've given up on the new one , I'm fed up with all the dead bodies.

RaraRachael · 05/05/2020 11:28

We tried to watch an episode from the original series, but found it very dated and poor sound quality. The only redeeming feature was the theme music Grin

Purplewithred · 05/05/2020 11:32

Rubbish. He's a rude, miserable git; everyone else does the actual thinking/detecting; mandatory unconvincing tough totty sidekick with her silly rolled up t-shirt sleeves; plot that makes Midsomer Murders look realistic. Don't waste your time.

RaraRachael · 05/05/2020 11:41

I thought he was horrible to the geeky detective this week, and the other one who stuffs his face all the time is just annoying. Added to that we have a boss who appears to be terminally ill and hasn't told anyone, a pathologist who also stuffs his face and is weird - everybody seems to have to have an "issue". VDV himself is horribly arrogant and not at all attractive

Bowednotbroken · 05/05/2020 12:37

I agree with pp that it's rubbish- MW is playing him without a single redeeming feature. Won't bother again.

ppeatfruit · 05/05/2020 12:45

Rara Of course it's dated it's from the 70s Grin I liked it because it IS old fashioned as I said it's social history. In a lot of the older series the sound wasn't like it is now (but that doesn't excuse the modern mumbling which is impossible to hear)! Though interestingly in the old one I could hear the dialogue better, they didn't mumble.

Also how nice NOT to have a high body count in a detective serial!

RaraRachael · 05/05/2020 13:24

ppeatfruit Some programmes stand the test of time better than others. I can't remember what I was watching recently from yesteryear and it didn't look naff like the original VDV.

stumbledin · 05/05/2020 13:29

I never got through episode 1, it was so awful. All the main characters are just unpleasant unlikeable people.

But thought give the second episode a go. So maybe I missed something from not seeing all of episode 1, but the idea that the female detective isn't feeling great so her solution is to hook up with the gremlin version of VdV is gross.

And without wishing to sound too old fashioned, as it is aimed at an 8pm sunday audience not something I would like any young person to think is normal.

But have thought as I have never been to Amsterday is what I should do is turn the sound of at play it through at speed as a sort of travel programme.

ppeatfruit · 06/05/2020 07:13

I watched the 2nd of the New VdeV . It was odd but not as violent as the first. I quite like the police people who are very REAL, down to the eating on the hoof. they're obviously not French , there's no long lunch hour!. I liked the discussion and ribbing of VdV and the woman pc ( I can't remember her name) when the others thought that they'd done the deed in his boat. True to life.

There was a hint that the WPC was gay in the first ep.

I couldn't quite make out if the twin had killed her sister WITH the head of the rehab centre or not. Ex dil used auahawsca (sp?) (she said it was safe) I wasn't sure <img loading="lazy" class="inline-flex mumsnet-emoji" alt="Hmm" src="https://www.mumsnet.com/build/assets/hmm-PR4o6B1t.png">
ppeatfruit · 06/05/2020 07:20

I liked that the WPC told VDV off about his treatment of the geeky (but clever newbie). Maybe he's jealous. Also that he got into trouble over their heavy handed treatment of the guy that got shot at the conference.

The police do often make mistakes. That woman boss doesn't seem as if she's got long for this world. I like her dog and the fact that he isn't cute at all Grin Oh and that VDV likes him !

SophieB100 · 06/05/2020 07:43

I think it's ok, and I'll watch it (because there's little else on at the moment) but something about it grates a bit, like it's trying too hard to be cool and arty, and it isn't, it's just a bit daft. It should either send itself up, like Midsomer, or be really arty - and it's stuck somewhere in the middle. Not as clever as it thinks it is - if you see what I mean.

ppeatfruit · 06/05/2020 09:36

Yes I do see what you mean Sophie I was thinking it would be better if it concentrated on pedestrian policing like catching bag snatchers or shoplifters. And the relationships within the force.

The murders are a bit much. (Licking\worshipping a wound as if it's Christs' Shock for goodness sake whatever next?)

Oh did anyone notice that the 'identical' twins were played by the same actor. I guessed when her 'tears' were exactly the same Grin

WrathofFaeKIopp · 06/05/2020 20:40
