What do you think?

Hope I look as good as Marc Warren when I get to 53!

Just heard the VDV theme on Classic FM. The 70s tune reminds me of being 4 years old. When my parents went on holiday I was left in the care of the gardener and his wife which I loved. I had my own bedroom in their flat which was part of our farmhouse.. I can remember hearing the music at the end and having to pretend to be asleep when Mrs L came to check on me... 😁 😁 😁
I visited Amsterdam 17 years ago and loved it... Might have to return with ds2.

ppeatfruit · 29/04/2020 12:20

You just reminded me we saw Cara Emeraud there (in a lovely old fashioned Theatre right by the canals) quite a few years ago. It was all amazing, including one of the best meals we have ever eaten (anywhere) in a restaurant, in one of those old buildings . The people were so friendly there.

Yes it's well worth a visit Elderflower. Grin

RaraRachael · 29/04/2020 13:45

I remember learning to play the VDV theme on my recorder and being very proud of myself Grin.
Sorry I don't get the love for Mark Warren - never heard of him and he reminds me too much of Sting.
I agree that Amsterdam is the real star. It's a place I never tire of visiting and will be pretty high on "my things to do when we escape from this" list.

Sundays at 8 or 9 - first one was last Sunday. But you can stream it on ITV Hub.

PoloNeckKnickers · 29/04/2020 16:13

Marc Warren is 53? I'm the same age and haven't worn half as well. Happy memories of our trip to Amsterdam, but got bored of the plot after about 20 minutes.

lynsey91 · 29/04/2020 20:33

I didn't mind it. Had recorded it so could fast forward the ads.

I agree about Amsterdam. Me and DH love Holland and we kept saying "oh must go there when this is all over" Leiden is our favourite place and hoping we can go next year

Redshoeblueshoe · 29/04/2020 20:55

I thought it was dreadful. I don't know why the police woman was so keen on fixing him up with the killer, especially as he's old enough to be her dad.

JonHammIsMyJamm · 29/04/2020 20:59

I love Amsterdam, we go every year. It’s so easy , quick and cheap to get to and absolutely stunningly beautiful.

ppeatfruit · 30/04/2020 08:38

Redshoe I may be wrong but I don't think the coffeebarwaitress was a killer. She was a niece of the political right wing leader who was sort of helping him out ( Did she know she was delivering the hostage's finger to his mum? I don't know). She was suspicious .I guessed she was on the wrong side half way through but the policewoman didn't.

Gemma2019 · 30/04/2020 08:52

It was alright I guess - I'll give it another go. Very disappointed about the theme tune as the old one was a good memory.

Marc Warren has aged well but he's not right for this part. He's too young looking and small to play VdV and does look a bit deranged. I suppose I would feel differently if I hadn't seen the original.

Not impressed by the stunning young waitress immediately bedding a 53 year old bloke - very tedious and James Bond.

QuiQuaiQuod · 30/04/2020 10:02

We bought the DVDs of the original. It was entertaining in a nostalgic sort of way but more than a bit patchy. Most surprising was that his wife changed radically about three times and he didn't seem to notice. Not much of a detective.
I watched the new one, but where was Arlette?

^^ this! More regenerations than Doctor WHO!

Alert alert. This new thing is CRAP!

WATCH THE ORIGINAL WITH THE LOVELY THEME TUNE ON TALKING PICTURES TV (SKY328, ALSO ON FREEVIEW)ON fRIDAYS AT 9PM ! THAT's Van Der Valk!

ppeatfruit · 30/04/2020 10:08

Oh I'll watch it Qui Thanks for that. I was wondering why no one was repeating the REAL one !!!

QuiQuaiQuod · 30/04/2020 17:31

ppeatfruit warning: Its dated, lots of alcohol and ciggies, and a bit sexist at times, but other than that, Brilliant and confusing! ANd better looking people!

missclimpson · 30/04/2020 18:14

I think he mislaid a couple of children along the way too?

PrincessFiorimonde · 30/04/2020 18:15

I don't know why it's called Van der Valk, as the only connection with the original series seems to be the location. Why not just present it as a new TV cop series set in Amsterdam?

Gemma2019 · 30/04/2020 19:50

I suppose it has the same name so all the people who remember it from last time will watch it again. It hooked me in, but I'm not overly impressed.

ppeatfruit · 01/05/2020 08:59

Thanks Qui But I do vaguely remember it ( too busy at college in the early 70s to watch telly properly) Grin Only mainly Barry Foster with his curly blonde hair. Grin

It'll be a period piece like Minder I suppose , as long as it's not so "in yer face" violent! I'll have to record it , it's too late for me ,we're an hour later in Fr.

Gemma It does seem odd to use the same name he wasn't explained as "Son of VdV" was he ? A bit like Barnaby in Midsummer , but the new guy was explained as his nephew.

Elderflower14 · 01/05/2020 12:34

They had to keep the Barnaby name in MMurders because in Europe its called Inspector Barnaby!

ArsenicNLace · 01/05/2020 17:12

Awful. So dull. I persevered until 15 mins before the end then switched off. Just didn't care about the ending.

JonHammIsMyJamm · 01/05/2020 17:16

It was worth watching for the interiors. However, the story was weak and didn’t really hang together.

rookiemere · 01/05/2020 18:23

We watched it last night.

Loved the scenery and now desperate to go back to Amsterdam and to that lovely looking rural place where the mother of the man that was killed lived ( if anyone knows where that is do tell me). Mind you anywhere apart from our back garden and local hills looks insufferably attractive at the minute.

But didn't really enjoy it that much. He didn't seem well cast and DH was a bit annoyed about the implausibility of the bar maid being overwhelmed by lust for a man twice her age. Plus it's too long at two hours an episode. I'll cope with that for Midsomer Murders because they develop the characters in the episode, but there wasn't much of that going on here. Plus in series set abroad, why do some characters have Dutch accents and some thick British ones ?

CanIHaveAPenguinPlease · 01/05/2020 23:07

I thought it was awful. Usually I love these programs as I can just switch off but I was bored. I knew it was going to be the waitress. And as if she’d go for a man twice her age. I’ll watch one more but I can’t see me becoming hooked.

ilovesooty · 01/05/2020 23:16

I go to Amsterdam frequently and recently watched all the original episodes again. I enjoyed this more than I expected to.

ppeatfruit · 02/05/2020 08:34

rookie Did you notice that the real 'baddies' had the Dutch accents and the police had London accents ? Like in American series sometimes the baddies have English\British accents and the goodies have American ones!

CanIHave I do think that this VDV did look quite a bit younger than 54, I wouldn't have kicked him out !!!! She may have been older than she looked !
