I can’t do links but if you google Justin Chambers Krista Vernoff, she sheds some light on why they decided not to kill him off.

MiddleClassProblem · 19/06/2020 07:43

I think if he actually quit for mental health reasons it would make sense why he suddenly stopped, why they have him his happy ending (although they seem to think it’s a nice one just because he have his shares to Jo) because they could have easily had him die off screen rather than having him come back to do a day a VO day.

I think they were sad to see him go and have left the door open for him to come back or they just didn’t want to kill off an original character. It feels like we haven’t had a Doctor death in a while though. We really used to get through them 😂

Somethingkindaoooo · 19/06/2020 08:00

Is Shonda not involved?

It was crap. The fake Izzy and Alex in bed, the emotional manipulation with the smiling kids....

Loved Mer's jammy bottoms though.

Here's the interview with Krista Vernoff re: Justin Chambers exit :

www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2020/04/greys-anatomy-justin-chambers-krista-vernoff

@papergirl1968 thanks for that, I hadn't read that interview.. I think it's quite telling & it does seem they had no other option but either give him a "happy ending" or kill him off.

Papergirl1968 · 19/06/2020 12:26

Thanks for doing the link, coveting. I haven’t read all the Vanity Fair article yet but Vernoff told Tvline.com that there were three choices - killing Karev off which they felt would have been too hard on the characters of Jo and Meredith; keeping Karev with Jo but off screen, which they thought would limit Jo as to where they could go with her character; or reuniting Karev with Izzie.
I think killing him off would have been way better.
I’d actually totally forgotten Karev and Izzie we’re married. In fact I thought she’d died.
As an aside, I wonder if the former stars who were in this week’s episodes got paid for it? They weren’t in the credits.
We’re nearly at the end of this season, which was cut short by four episodes due to covid, apparently.

I'd be interested to know this but I assume not since they probably own the rights to show the old footage.

Did make me wonder though IF actors leave on a bad footing (ie Hiegl), I wonder if they can request that their footage never be shown again.. or request for the rights to be taken away. If you get what I mean.. don't know why they would, unless it was just to be spiteful.

Heygirlheyboy · 19/06/2020 13:45

Oh I'm sure Grey's owns Grey's.. No way do they get later credit.

MiddleClassProblem · 19/06/2020 13:53

The production company or channel will own the rights in perpetuity. It has nothing to do with the actors.

Papergirl1968 · 19/06/2020 14:48

Hmm, interesting.
It’s all exposure for them anyway. I’d forgotten how pretty Izzy was especially in her wedding dress and that pink ball gown. She even managed to make her scrubs look glamorous!

MiddleClassProblem · 19/06/2020 14:52

It would have been a very cheap episode to make too. Happy cost book.

JacobReesMogadishu · 19/06/2020 19:31

@covetingthepreciousthings

After watching yesterday's episode.. out of interest, can we have a show of hands if you think Greys should end after this series now?

I never thought I'd think this, but i am starting to believe they should wrap it up.. maybe end this season then have a special double bill episode to tie up loose ends, give people a happy ending.

🙋🏻‍♀️

I think it’s jumped the shark. That was a shit episode, unbelievable story line. There’s very few characters that I care about now. Even the original ones who used to be able to act fairly decently just seem to be Going through the Motions in a half hearted attempt at acting (Richard Webber I’m looking at you).

Why did Heigl (Izzy) leave the show on a bad footing? I’d not heard that before.

Lucywilde · 19/06/2020 19:35

I’d forgotten they’d been married. I couldn’t remember if she’d died or not. Sigh. Old greys was the way. I actually can’t think what they can do now. Considering they’re all meant to be hugely respected surgeons they act like total idiots at times. Maggie has been a disappointing character.

There's more details here, but basically she was nominated for an Emmy award for her role however turned it down because she didn't feel it was the right material to win an award.. Shock
I could never understand that total blatant kick in the teeth to the Greys writing crew etc but perhaps she had her reasons, anyways needless to say it went downhill after that and then she didn't show up for work one day!

mistermagpie · 19/06/2020 19:56

Clearly he didn't leave to diversify his career, if he was remotely interested in diversifying his career he wouldn't have played the same character for 15 years! That vanity fair article is interesting but I think they are kidding themselves thinking that anyone loved that episode - it was dire.

I feel for the character of Jo, such a mess and I hope they don't go back down the breakdown/rehab route.

I would be happy to see Greys end after this series. It's been terrible.

JacobReesMogadishu · 19/06/2020 20:11

Thanks @covetingthepreciousthings that was an interesting read. Odd that Rhimes has had 2 main actors walk out with no notice. She’s either unlucky or she’s the problem?

Also very excited to see in that article Netflix have done a series of Firefly Lane which should be released soon. I liked that book.

covetingthepreciousthings · 19/06/2020 20:19

I guess after what, 16-17 years if she had been a big problem there would have been more cast issues. There may have been a problem between her and Heigl, but I'm leaning more towards a mental health issue for Justin Chambers. I don't buy the 'diversify' his career line either.

covetingthepreciousthings · 19/06/2020 20:23

www.digitalspy.com/tv/ustv/a32913984/greys-anatomy-season-18-update-abc/

So there is definitely a season 17, as they appear to be working on it right now.. but they are in discussions about S18..

I hope they wrap it up in S17...

Heygirlheyboy · 19/06/2020 20:32

As far as I remember it was Heigl that came off very badly at the time and yes it seems more a personal issue with Karev. What a mess. Even send him to anohjer hospital Like Derek and Christina..

Lucywilde · 19/06/2020 20:50

God knows what rubbish they’ll cover in season 17. I think Mer needs a stalker. That might ramp it up a bit. But it’s slowly becoming boring. No big medical cases, lots of moping and whining. Boring interns. No really good characters.

covetingthepreciousthings · 19/06/2020 21:17

God knows what rubbish they’ll cover in season 17

A pandemic? That could fill at least a season Grin

MiddleClassProblem · 19/06/2020 22:39

😂

Katherine Heigl is notoriously difficult to work with and her mum is/was her manager and is apparently very difficult too.

JacobReesMogadishu · 19/06/2020 22:41

I think Mer needs a stalker

Personally I think she needs killing off! Grin

mistermagpie · 19/06/2020 22:59

The recent 'mystery illness' case that spanned a few episodes and involved bringing in the deaf consultant was ok, nothing like the old days but at least it was medical!

That stuff with the elderly ballroom dancers and the bear attack couple where the wife was having the affair? Just really blah and lazy.

Also, are we done with Pac North now? With Karev gone and Webber/Owen back at Grey Sloan, I can only assume so. If so, what the hell
was the point of that then?!

JacobReesMogadishu · 19/06/2020 23:23

Yes, there’s very little in the way of patient story lines anymore. I know the focus was always on the doctors but at least there always was some good underpinning patient stuff going on.

Onemorefuck · 21/06/2020 09:21

I think the writers are getting very lazy. The it’s really quite tedious now. I was putting off watching the latest episode, and I shouldn’t have watched it at all.
