Just finished it and I’m curious to see what people thought - with SPOILERS allowed so don’t read on if you haven’t seen it or haven’t finished it!

I'm watching it, I can't remember what episode I'm on. It is easy viewing but rather poorly acted imo and lots of plot holes so far. Obviously I don't mean Siobhan Finneran.

Fantasisa · 02/02/2020 17:36

I'll be back once I've finished it!

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 02/02/2020 18:05

We're part way through. I'll also be back after.

0blio · 02/02/2020 18:11

I'm hooked already after two episodes. I agree some of the acting isn't great but the storylines are promising.

oohnicevase · 02/02/2020 18:23

I've watched it , what do you want to discuss?

vjg13 · 02/02/2020 19:53

It was weakly acted typical British drama, I did carry on watching it for the locations which were mainly around Manchester and the gorgeous houses!

vjg13 · 02/02/2020 19:54

And the plot was weak, you could see the 'shock reveals' coming from a mile off!

Dennisreynoldsduster · 02/02/2020 19:58

@oohnicevase yes! What did you think? Did you like it? I started off not sure, then got into it, then felt a bit.... meh about the ending!
Also the stranger REALLY annoyed me and I found her motivation weak and unbelievable.
I thought the demolition of the house and the shock discovery was really well done -
Just the way he was so resigned to what was happening and it suddenly became clear exactly why he had been refusing to move all this time.

@vjg13 the houses were amazing weren’t they! I found myself getting distracted by them and not paying attention to what was going on.

I started today on the back of another thread and have watched the 1st 3, will watch another 2 or 3 tonight.

oohnicevase · 02/02/2020 20:09

Yeah it was ok, I quite like the harlen Corben series ( or whatever his name is ) .. I think the 5 was one of his and it's easy watching . Nothing too tricky .

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 02/02/2020 20:30

Binged on this the whole weekend! I loved it but was a bit disappointed with the ending I felt it could have done with one more episode to explain things properly as I ended up a bit confused Confused

Some of it was unbelievable but on the whole I loved it, it was fast paced and I loved the twist or reveal at the end of each episode.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 02/02/2020 21:08

I was intrigued and we watched all eight episodes between Thursday and last night. Overall, I thought there were too many unnecessary plot lines, so it got a bit far-fetched, and things weren’t explained properly. The bent cop, for example - what was his deal? The ending was utterly daft.

I’m going to read the book when I finish my current book and will be interested to see how they match.

Fantasisa · 02/02/2020 23:28

Beautifully shot, ludicrous plot and lots of awful awful acting.

Doyoumind · 03/02/2020 00:43

Just finished the last episode. I was motivated to keep watching but agree with the ludicrous plot. I also saw many things coming from a mile off.

I don't understand if they were making it look like Katz killed Corinne how they explained Tripp's involvement.

Alos, I know the point was he was living beyond his means but how much money could he have taken from the sports club to cover the gap between a PE teacher's salary and an amazing house with an expensive car with a wife who didn't work?

Dennisreynoldsduster · 03/02/2020 07:37

@Doyoumind agree, I was confused by that

Also the fact that the detective lied about knowing Heidi so she could investigate - ridiculous. That would have been uncovered quickly plus she spoke at the ceremony!

ImperfectTents · 03/02/2020 08:13

Nonsense but I was gripped. Just what I needed as I was ill this weekend.

Dennisreynoldsduster · 03/02/2020 09:14

Same @ImperfectTents it was the perfect binge watch!

momtoboys · 03/02/2020 18:56

I watched the entire thing over the weekend. I really enjoyed it but I didn't see any reason for the cop and killing the bakery owner.

GetUpAgain · 03/02/2020 19:01

I just finished this, really enjoyed the posh houses all these people live in and the clumsy way they mentioned 'the town' and 'three villages away' etc instead of saying Manchester Grin

I wondered what reason they would give for Katz killing corinne and tripp, didn't really make a lot of sense.

That viaduct though, gorgeous!!

Fantasisa · 03/02/2020 20:08

There was no motivation for either of the murders, did they mention a figure that was stolen? I kept thinking it was over £500 subs.

Also, the murderer motivated by getting money to pay his daughter's medical bills makes more sense in the US but NO sense in the UK.

GetUpAgain · 03/02/2020 21:10

I thought the amount was 10k, but I may have invented that.... not worth murdering for...

happinessischocolate · 03/02/2020 21:10

I wondered what reason they would give for Katz killing corinne and tripp, didn't really make a lot of sense.

I didn't get the ending, was it made clear that it was Tripp who stole the money? And Tripp and the wife I've forgotten her name already were killed a over a week apart ?

Also, the murderer motivated by getting money to pay his daughter's medical bills makes more sense in the US but NO sense in the UK.

But if she's already seen loads of doctors he would have to pay for specialists to see her

youngestisapsycho · 03/02/2020 21:14

How did Katz know that The Stranger had been to Heidi and was blackmailing her about her daughter?
Why was the Stranger investigating Heidi’s daughter anyway?

Doyoumind · 03/02/2020 21:17

She was blackmailing that guy who hired him too, youngest.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 03/02/2020 21:20

So was it actually Katz's wife poisoning Olivia? What happened with Ethical Whatsit man and his barefoot and pregnant wife? What on earth was Katz actually up to half the time? How the hell did Tripp really think that Adam would just keep his mouth shut? Why did Corinne fake a pregnancy? Is (was he called Max?) going to be prosecuted for decapitating a llama? Was the groundsman guy really just chopping wood in the forest in the middle of the night? What was the actual point of the demolition storyline?

The whole thing was just massively unsatisfying, really, and terribly heavyhanded. Either the book is utter codswallop or it's the worst adaptation ever written.
