Just finished it and I’m curious to see what people thought - with SPOILERS allowed so don’t read on if you haven’t seen it or haven’t finished it!

OP posts:

Omg, I finished it last night at 12:30am and the ending knocked me for six. Poor man scrabbling around in the soil looking at the rotten body of his dead wife! I feel scarred for life now...

A few things didn't make sense to me:

Why did Katz have to kill Heidi? Surely he could have just come to the cafe, shown his actual police ID, asked about the blackmailers and left. Why shoot her then kill her?

How is it conceivable that Katz killed Tripp, when Katz was in custody at the time of Tripp's death? Unless they buried Tripp to "discover" him a month later when no-one could tell time of death.

Oh, and I lol'd at Christine's job - that was an American detail that they totally failed to convert to UK, as I've never seen a UK cinema in the 21st century with someone walking around selling popcorn.

Did adam and the stranger not grow up on the same street?

happinessischocolate · 19/02/2020 22:20

Did adam and the stranger not grow up on the same street?

Yep, but there's a big difference in ages so wouldn't have known each other

BabloHoney · 20/02/2020 14:29

Finished this last night.. enjoyed it but so many unanswered questions! Can someone please explain the mobile phone chase to me? Was it Tripp that had Corienne’s phone? If so, why did he just leave it on the ground and not throw it into the river?? Surely he knew if found it could have evidence against him on it (unless I completely misunderstood that part!?)

LutherRalph1 · 20/02/2020 18:27

Yes in the flash back you saw him watching them find the phone, he was in a bush. He wanted them to think she had committed suicide

ForestYeti · 20/02/2020 19:19

Does anyone have a crush on Katz or is that just me

BunnytheBee · 20/02/2020 19:36

That’s just you I think

BabloHoney · 20/02/2020 20:19

Thanks LutherRalph1 I missed that!

Forest - Paul Kaye will always be Dennis Pennis to me Grin

ForestYeti · 20/02/2020 20:46

I thought it might be me 🤦🏼‍♀️

Yes never had a thing for Dennis pennis or balding middle aged men with an psychotic anger problem come to think of it, Paul Kaye does have amazing eyes though lol

ClubfootMaestro · 20/02/2020 21:38

Katz was Dennis pennis?!

CallofDoodee · 20/02/2020 21:43

I enjoyed it, despite the plot holes.

But did anyone else think that the theme tune was absolutely bangin

'Oh oha OHHHHHHHH'

I looked forward to it each episode Grin

CallofDoodee · 20/02/2020 21:45

Yeah as soon as Katz came into it I said to DH 'oh look its Dennis Pennis!'

He was also in Game of Thrones wasn't he?

I also noticed that the guy who played Tripp played a very similar character (also 'the murderer') in the second series of Broadchurch.

EnidBlyton · 20/02/2020 22:36

The story writers lost the plot!

EnidBlyton · 21/02/2020 07:45

So in the book, it had a more realistic ending, with the policeman woman planting the gun in tripp's hand and makes it look as if there had been a fight, and Adam being let off. they really should have left that bit in!
probably ran out of time.
which is the problem with adapted series.

EnidBlyton · 21/02/2020 07:46

on the whole I did enjoy it, apart from the final 10 minutes

LutherRalph1 · 21/02/2020 09:44

I loved the theme tune too!

BabloHoney · 21/02/2020 12:11

The theme tune is Monster by Walking On Cars Smile

Just finished watching this with late teen DD who was traumatised by the bit where they find the corpse. Loved ASH coming good at the end though, and enjoyed the mad mashup of plots.

We spent the last ten minutes singing “We both reached for the gun” from Chicago (having spent many previous episodes singing “He/she had it coming”) because we were expecting our hero, as a competent all-purpose lawyer (nobody ever specialises in crap TV drama), to fake an impeccable self-defence story. We were also united in righteous feminist fury about Killane being a good bloke who randomly snapped as a one off when his wife threatened to take the child. That’s really not what happens in real life - the guys who do this tend to have been nasty controlling bastards all along.

I failed to spot that carefully-gender-unspecified-Chris was The Stranger, but I did clock Trip as the Big Bad from pretty early on. I loved the twist that the real villain was all those lovely kitchens and impeccable front gardens tempting people to wrong-doing in the cause of aspirational living - arguably the only subtle bit of plotting in the whole series.

ItIsWhatItIsInnit · 23/02/2020 10:40

I didn't figure out it was Tripp, but literally JUST before he admitted it all to Adam, I was thinking "how on earth is a teacher with a SAH-wife able to afford a ginormous kitchen with a granite island?! That's like a 25k kitchen!"

crosspelican · 25/02/2020 13:00

I loved it, holes an' all, until the ending. It felt like they had written another episode, been told they didn't have the money to make it, so squished what they could into the time allowed.

Problems:

  1. Why did Katz kill Heidi?
  2. Why was Suzanne Hope?
  3. Why did Tripp so calmly think that a) RA would stay quiet and b) not kill him?
  4. Why was the ending?
  5. Does RA ever actually go to work?
  6. Why was there zero comment on the fact that every murder was a woman being casually killed by a man for not agreeing with him/no discernible reason at all? (apart from Tripp)

Also, brb - just moving to Manchester so I can get a house the size of my entire street on a... teacher's salary and send my kids to that amazing school.

crosspelican · 25/02/2020 13:08

Oh this is helpful - thetab.com/uk/2020/02/04/the-stranger-filming-locations-netflix-141960

JustDanceAddict · 28/02/2020 23:31

Just finished watching. Binged watched in 3 sittings as just had to know!
Knew Tripp was a dodgy character and totally agree w the person who said how could he have afforded all that on a teacher’s salary. I think the money stolen was £10K which wouldve been a drop in the ocean in that house! Should’ve been 100K really to make sense.
The ending was very meh w the killing & cover up of Tripp.
I don’t understand why Katz killed Heidi either. I also can’t believe they didn’t realise he was bent earlier, was so obvious!!

iibdii · 07/03/2020 07:54

Too many blunders in story, the Killeen guy had 20 years to dispose off the body he should have watched Shawshank redemption.
The black girl keep doing fake pregnancy n her husband still doesn't know.
A simple fall land their friend in coma for entire show, why was he even in the show.
Lastly when Tripp trying to convince him to stay quiet after showing him body

vjg13 · 07/03/2020 08:37

It was very 'Scooby Doo' at that point!
