There is no matriarch anymore, there always used to be the older woman that everyone respected, Lou Beale, Pauline, Peggy etc, yes we still have Dot but she does not have the gravitas of these strong Eastend women and I think far to gentle a character to carry that role. Sharon is the obvious candidate to take this on, with Shirley as her nemesis, though Shirley is on the verge of becoming the joke older woman character that soap writers seem to like women to become when they get to a certain age.. .. I think they are pushing Cathy down that route as well. So many of the female characters just seems to be a victims of men’s aggression and control at the moment and I really don’t like it. I agree only woman with any power is Ruby.

Yes all they’re doing with Shirley and Cathy is making them funny drunks all the time.

Shirley can be very witty and has some great one liners and killer looks but she could be so much more than just propping up the bar and being a smart arse.

If they teamed her up with Phil properly she could be a force to be reckoned with. Didn’t she used to work for Phil in some dodgy respect?

I like Karen as a character and think she’s got several layers to her rather than just a comedy character (which she does well too) but not sure she is matriarch potential.

Sir Alan Sugar tweets he doesn’t believe Keanu is dead. Eastenders disagree and sir Alan responds “show me the body not a video on Martins phone” He also says that Martin burning something proves he’s not dead. I’m not sure how that proves anything

Maybe they will keep it as ambiguous in case he wants to come back one day?
Id hate him to be dead , but it's not looking that good is it? Two fatherless babies though! Tragic , even by EE standards.
(Although saying that Jack's clan were left motherless a few years back and seem ok in the kiddie cupboard! )

Seeing Classic Eastenders (sorry to mention again) I'd forgotten what a massive old bag Pauline was to everyone. I suppose she was trying to be like Lou, but she was so horrible to everyone, and doted on ne'er do well Mark. Not nice to 'Chelle and pretty much mean to anyone not in her famer-lee.

Can't see Kathy being a matriarch as she was always a bit of an outsider. Maybe that type has died off in the east end? Seems to be the gangster moll type with any power now.

Ha ha, I just remembered a story about Wendy Richards - apparently there was a scene written where Pauline was meant to be sweeping the steps outside either the launderette or her house, and Wendy refused to do it, saying "Pauline Fowler did not sweep steps"!

I still don't think Martian killed Ken. They don't usually shy away from showing important deaths on EE and yet all there is of Ken is a video on a phone.

I think EE director was trying to be tech savvy with using the phone

I think it's been deliberately left unclear. Either because of a plot twist or because the actor wanted a break.
