I'm so looking forward to seeing this when it returns next Sunday!

The intro music is amazing. The only other intro music I love in the same way is the game of thrones one. Beautiful!

CoolCarrie · 22/11/2019 11:47

Now that Charles Dance has been cast as Mountbatten, I wonder who they can use for a much older PP? He would have been prefect, but obviously not now. I agree Imelda Staunton would have been great, but perhaps she is could be on the cards to play an older QE in later series, as 60 episodes are planned. It’s easier to age people up than down, I think, maybe a television make up artist on here could tell us.

keiratwiceknightly · 22/11/2019 11:50

One of the things I so love about the intro is the way the closeups of the crown being created also look a little bit like jail bars at moments - the gilded cage really shows here.

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 22/11/2019 12:02

CoolCarrie I'm determined for Iain Glen to be in it in some capacity or other, so I'm nominating him for Older Prince Philip.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 22/11/2019 12:08

Imelda Staunton has been confirmed for seasons 5 and 6, @CoolCarrie.

I agree she does look a bit like a kitchen cook, but then the Duke of Windsor referred to the QM as "Cookie" so maybe not such a stretch to cast Imelda S as her daughter!

SunsetBoulevard3 · 22/11/2019 12:14

I think what comes home to me is that they are prisoners in a gilded cage. Pacing up and down, bored out of their minds. What a life.

QueenOfTheAndals · 22/11/2019 12:14

Imelda played an aristocrat in the recent Downton film so she knows how to posh up! I'm trying to think who play the DoE. David Threlfall (yes, Frank Gallagher from Shameless!) was pretty good in the TV movie about Princess M some years ago. Maybe they could ask him again?

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 22/11/2019 12:53

Actually having done a bit more googling, IS is less certain. The Guardian says she is "reportedly" taking in the role. Netflix are denying it. We'll just have to wait and see,

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 22/11/2019 12:56

How about Jeremy Irons for PP? I think it could work.

SpiderCharlotte · 22/11/2019 12:58

I reckon Michael Sheen could play the Queen, he seems able to metamorphosize into just about any other human being in every part I've seen him in. Grin

SpiderCharlotte · 22/11/2019 12:59

@Myimaginarycathasfleas oh yes, good call.

SpiderCharlotte · 22/11/2019 13:00

Or perhaps Bill Nighy?

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 22/11/2019 13:14

Oh god no, not Bill Nighy. Sorry, I know he's a Much Beloved National Treasure and all that, but I really can't bear him - he never seems to be able to make eye contact with whoever he's talking to and he just mumbles his lines through pursed lips in exactly the same way in everything he's in, whatever role he's playing.

I do like Imelda Staunton and I think she has more range than people give her credit for. I'm not sure what a kitchen maid is supposed to look like anyway - it is because she has quite a round face instead of aristocratic cheekbones or something? The Queen herself has looked like a Monty Python Pepperpot lady since about 1980 anyway!

Housewife2010 · 22/11/2019 13:55

Couldn't we find a part for the lovely Jim Carter in later series?

QueenOfTheAndals · 22/11/2019 13:56

@Housewife2010 Porchy!

QueenOfTheAndals · 22/11/2019 13:57

@SpiderCharlotte Some hair dye and makeup and Michael could reprise Tony Blair!

missclimpson · 22/11/2019 14:03

Just watched episode 4 and wondering why they made up all that stuff about the Guardian interview with Princess Alice? She had been at the palace for two years before the programme was made anyway. I also don't remember lots of negative reviews of the documentary, everyone I knew loved it. Very bizarre.
There were quite a few annoying historical misrepresentations in the first two series, but this one is a bit ridiculous.

RuffleCrow · 22/11/2019 14:24

Nighy's best and most believable role was when he was eaten by zombies in Shaun of the Dead imo

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 22/11/2019 14:25

@QueenOfTheAndals @Housewife2010

He'd make a good Ron Ferguson as well.

CoolCarrie · 22/11/2019 18:05

I am delighted about Imelda , she will be brilliant, loved her in Cranford , she is so versatile ; Vera Drake and Mama Rose were her best performance s so far.

IcedPurple · 22/11/2019 19:19

May I add my voice to the 'Dear Lord no, not Bill Nighy!' chorus. I'm sure he's a nice man but I find him deeply irritating to watch.

I also think - if they're determined to cast high-profile actors - that they may have 'wasted' Charles Dance on the Mountbatten role. He would have been a very good choice for the older DOE, although as I've said before, I really think casting lesser known actors is better in series like this. Cheaper too!

SkaterGrrrrl · 22/11/2019 19:40

Been wondering where I recognise Tobias Menzies from .... he is in the very funny /sad This Way Up with Aisling Bea and Sharon Horgan.

Elodie2019 · 22/11/2019 20:47

Or perhaps Bill Nighy?

That really would be the nail in the coffin Confused

WaningGibbous · 22/11/2019 21:12

Has Nigel Havers been in it yet?

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 22/11/2019 21:27

I thought of Nigel Havers but I'm not sure what part would suit him. He's so genial in everything, I'm not sure he could do irrascible royal!
