I'm so looking forward to seeing this when it returns next Sunday!

I absolutely think it's bollocks that the Queen Mum, a horrific snob, would ever have dreamt of lowering herself to discuss Charles' private life with commoners. Particularly in fact, as Anne no longer being a virgin would still have been verboten then.

VanyaHargreeves · 21/11/2019 20:34

I also think even ANNE, perhaps ESPECIALLY Anne would have drawn the line in discussing her sex life in front of her father and uncle

Elodie2019 · 21/11/2019 20:35

The scriptwriters are either rewriting history or truthfully exposing the Queen and others as really dreadful people.
I'm in the second to last episode and it's been very dull and unpleasant to watch throughout.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 21/11/2019 22:24

Imelda Staunton is taking over from OC for seasons 5 and 6. She's about the right size.Grin

QueenOfTheAndals · 21/11/2019 22:31

And her RL husband Jim Carter (aka Downton's Mr Carson) could put in an appearance as Porchy!

southeastdweller · 21/11/2019 22:33

Thanks, just googled it to find out more - Baz Bamigboye has scooped the news:

It's a brilliant casting choice!

ooh episode 6 , powerful stuff

SunsetBoulevard3 · 21/11/2019 22:46

David and Wallis portrayed as poor misunderstood star crossed lovers. Never mind the Nazi sympathising, the plotting against the British Govt or the playboy antics . No, no. Lovely people really...

QueenOfTheAndals · 21/11/2019 22:48

That was covered in series 1 and 2 though. I didn't think the Windsors came off well in that.

IcedPurple · 21/11/2019 22:49

Imelda Staunton! That came out of left field! I thought they might hold out for Helen Mirren to reprise her role as The Queen, but she's probably too old now.... and too expensive.

IcedPurple · 21/11/2019 22:52

I can only speak for the first two series - I haven't seen the 3rd series yet - but on that basis I really don't think Uncle David is portrayed favourably. I think they've done a very good job of showing him as the rather pathetic, weak, selfish man he was. The actor - sorry I don't know his name - was great.

SunsetBoulevard3 · 21/11/2019 22:54

Derek Jacobi

SunsetBoulevard3 · 21/11/2019 22:55

@QueenOfTheAndals
Yes I’d forgotten that. So long ago!

SunsetBoulevard3 · 21/11/2019 22:56

I don’t think Anne is convincing at all.

southeastdweller · 21/11/2019 23:14

Alex Jennings played David in the first two seasons.

I thought the actor playing Princess Anne was spot on.

SenecaFalls · 22/11/2019 00:27

I agree. Erin Doherty's Anne is exactly what I imagine her to have been like as a young woman, except for the part where she regales her family with details of her sex life. But that's the producers' fault.

Rumboogie · 22/11/2019 01:24

Well, I've watched it all now, and I didn't enjoy this series very much. The thing that really bothered me was the utter tosh and subversion of fact, which, particularly when mixed with some truth will, no doubt, be swallowed whole by the masses. This was particularly true of episode 6. Never seen such a load of rubbish. Perhaps this is more obvious as we are now in the period which I remember first hand.

I really enjoyed the first two series, despite some of the fictions, but I don't think I'll watch any more if this is the dross we will be fed.

ShippingNews · 22/11/2019 01:31

You can't expect the producers to cover his early life ,when the subject of the episode is his final illness and death.

Elodie2019 · 22/11/2019 06:11

Watch series 3.

Very different portrayal of both of them.

Elodie2019 · 22/11/2019 06:15

Imelda S ? Oh dear.

Fairylea · 22/11/2019 07:00

Eeeek Imelda S. From Claire Foy to Imelda S .... ShockShockShockSad

RuffleCrow · 22/11/2019 07:16

At some point getting the big names in became more important than telling the story. Did they have any big direction/production/casting personnel changes between S2 and S3?

LadyIsabellaWrotham · 22/11/2019 07:24

What’s the problem with Imelda Staunton? What have you seen her in?

I think OC is a great actress giving a fine performance of the character as written, but is suffering from the fact that she’s been so ubiquitous, both acting and as herself, that we find it difficult to suspend disbelief. IS (although a very busy actress) is much less high profile which would help with that. Slight problem with the overlap of hair and makeup with Dolores Umbridge though.

icecreamsundae32 · 22/11/2019 07:24

Not read whole thread. Watched ep 3&4 last night and found 3 very upsetting. I'm 33 and from the SE and had never heard of this tragedy before, my husband same age and from here too had, glad I'm not the only one though who hadnt.

Really liking the PM & DoE actors. Enjoyed the limerick episode too.
