I'm so looking forward to seeing this when it returns next Sunday!

Looking at Queen Victoria's off spring, they all married european royalty, well most of them

WWl was basically a war among the children and grandchildren of Queen Victoria.

Haven't watched the 3rd series yet, but am slightly sceptical, especially seeing the comments here.

I often think that it's better to hire relatively unknown actors to play extremely well-known people. When you have an actress with a long established public 'persona', like Helena, it clashes a bit with the 'persona' of the very well-known woman she is portraying. Also, Olivial Colman always seems to play a variation on the same character. Which is not HMTQ.

Matt Smith was known from Doctor Who, but most of the other actors in the first two series weren't very famous. Yes, Claire Foy had been in very well-received productions like 'Wolf Hall', but a lot of people wouldn't have had a clue who she was. That made it easier to accept her as the most iconic woman of recent times. I get that it would be hard for her and the others to continue playing their characters into their old age, wonder if it might not have been better to 'age up' MS and the other actors for the 3rd series at least? And then recast the roles? So having only 2 sets of actors rather than 3?

I've actually had nightmares from the Aberfan episode. That imagery will stay with me for years. I'm not sold on OC or HBC yet, Tobias and Jason are incredible though. Although I wasn't born during this era it's when my mum and dad met and married so it's familiar to me in that sense. Looking forward to the remaining 7 eps.

Fairylea · 20/11/2019 10:31

I thought the Princess Alice episode was very good. I just struggled to get past Merlin popping up Grin

JumpiestBat · 20/11/2019 10:46

Actually I take some of my criticisms The Princess Alice episode was great. And the actress playing Princess Anne is superb.

Incidentally I agree with pp that distinctive famous faces detract from the characters they play. When a relative unknown is cast you become immersed in the characterisation, not distracted by thinking about Fleabag's Step Mum or Bellatrix from Harry Potter.

I'd make a few exceptions - for example Tom Hanks is a shapeshifter, as is Michael Sheen.

QueenOfTheAndals · 20/11/2019 11:09

Speaking of Michael Sheen, I wonder if he'll ever get to reprise his Tony Blair for this? I know he's older now but it's nothing that a bit of CGI and some hair dye can't fix!

SpiderCharlotte · 20/11/2019 11:21

I like OC. I don't think HBC is right for the role of Princess Margaret at all. Much as I CV think she's a great actress, I don't like her in this role.

SpiderCharlotte · 20/11/2019 11:22

What are those little silver twizzle thingys they use to stir their drinks?

SpiderCharlotte · 20/11/2019 11:37

@CaptainMyCaptain They've got little legs like a mini tripod. I collect cocktail glasses and stirrers and would love some of these. 😂

CaptainMyCaptain · 20/11/2019 12:14

I must have missed them, I might have to watch again Grin.

Figgygal · 20/11/2019 12:15

Im not enjoying it so much so far I'm not sure what the issue is for me for OC I just feel like she's not had much to do.

Think Tobias Menzies is great though

Also loved the bubbikins episode

JumpiestBat · 20/11/2019 12:36

I think Jane Lapotaire deserves a Bafta for that episode.

Fairylea · 20/11/2019 12:44

I’ve just fast forwarded through the man on the moon episode. Just so boring - who wants to see some mid life crisis played out for nearly an hour.

The Prince Charles and Camilla stuff is very interesting.

SenecaFalls · 20/11/2019 13:00

his Aunt was the Tsarina

One of the most interesting things to me about this is that Philip provided his DNA for identification of the Tsarina and her family when their bodies were found.

SenecaFalls · 20/11/2019 13:08

I think that OC gets better toward the last two episodes; the final scene with Harold Wilson was very moving.

SpiderCharlotte · 20/11/2019 13:10

@Fairylea that was my favourite episode. Grin I thought Tobias Menzies was so fantastic in that one.

BonnesVacances · 20/11/2019 13:20

OC drops her accent too much for my liking, they must have been on a tight filming schedule. HBC seems to be acting in her own voice. TM is better and manages Philip's mannerisms too. I've just watched the moon landings episodes and watching TM walk around with the new dean at the end without my glasses on actually really looked like the real deal.

JO and the actor that plays Anne are amazing! For the first time I've felt sorry for Charles and wondered whether he had as much to do with W&H's normal upbringing as Diana did. She got all the credit but maybe Charles realised what he missed out on and wanted to give his boys those experiences too.

GiantKitten · 20/11/2019 14:08

Well, he let them go to Eton.
Which is where he should have gone, poor boy Sad

CaptainMyCaptain · 20/11/2019 14:17

They've got little legs like a mini tripod.just seen them! Like little whisks.

CaptainMyCaptain · 20/11/2019 14:19

I feel very sorry for Charles - and for Camilla being provided for his use then married off to Parker-Bowlers. The QM was so spiteful and smug and Mountbatten such a snake.

Ihatesundays · 20/11/2019 14:26

I came to find a thread. I’m not feeling HBC, she just isn’t working for me. Physically and in her voice.

Princess Anne is amazing though.

SpiderCharlotte · 20/11/2019 14:28

@CaptainMyCaptain Yes! You know the ones I mean!

SpiderCharlotte · 20/11/2019 14:29

I've started back on Series 1 Episode 1 again. I'm annoyed I've seen them all now. 😊

IcedPurple · 20/11/2019 14:30

I feel very sorry for Charles - and for Camilla being provided for his use then married off to Parker-Bowlers.

I don't think she was married off. Andrew Parker Bowles was handsome and dashing, quite the catch in the early 70s. He is considered the inspiration for Jilly Cooper's charming posh philander, Rupert Cambell Black.
