Your biggest TV disappointments?

VanyaHargreeves · 25/10/2019 20:27

For me I watch American shows almost exclusively so it's

Heroes

A near perfect first season, hit badly by the writers strike the following year and just never recovered.

Lost

The final season. Invested so hard in this show and the last series is just hours of them wandering about in the jungle with torches to reveal what you suspected in series 1

*House Of Cards
*
So great when it started.
Obviously the production was put in a no win situation by Kevin Spacey, but even making allowances for that the last season may be one of the worst series of TV I've EVER seen. Total nonsense and an absolutely shit ending.

Game Of Thrones

I was a DIE HARD fan of this series, and not even I can defend HOW bad the final series was. They just threw away everything they spent years building story wise for shock value and spectacle. Unforgivable. It was obvious that the showrunners had tapped out, and they should've passed it on rather than run it in to the ground.

Anyone else?

Sorry that should have been crimson field.
I totally agree about Sherlock, what a wasted opportunity in the last series, too much Mary, Gentis and Moffett are smarty pants who fucked up a superb idea, just for the hell of it, and it won’t be back, the three stars are not friendly and I don’t see how they could make any more.

CoolCarrie · 27/10/2019 10:41

Just one more , last series POLDARK !

StinkGhoul · 27/10/2019 11:24

Better call Saul. He’s a great actor. It’s a great character. But his spin off show was SO BORING. It was literally like watching paint dry before your eyes. Grey paint.

Nooooo!

Have you seen all of it to date? I didn’t love the first season but the last two seasons especially have been absolutely incredible. I enjoy it more than BB.

Dexter was just hideous. A couple of amazing seasons, they should have ended it there.

The last series of Mad Men just felt like a huge waste to me.

I have just finally gotten to the end of S2 of Barry and I almost don’t want them to make any more because it’s absolutely perfect.

Rhubarb01 · 27/10/2019 12:03

You beat me to it @CoolCarrie - I agree with both "Home Fires" and "The Crimson Field". Good series, both with a strong focus on the roles of women during two major conflicts - both cancelled with storylines unresolved.

I'm going to add "Sanditon" to the list as well - a disappointing fanfic type continuation of Jane Austen's unfinished novel with a miserable ending that may or may not be resolved depending on whether ITV choose to recommission. "Beecham House" also promised much, cost a lot and delivered little.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 27/10/2019 13:55

Lost... I liked the ending but the bits inbetween where they went back in time.. The Island moved.. The smoke monster things that were a bit ehhhh.

Wasn't super impressed with the last season of Buffy..

Once Upon a Time.. Just seemed to lose ideas but didn't know where to stop. The last season with grown up Henry was very mehhhh

Cancelling Pushing Daisies. Know only so much they could do with it and was a bit to sweet at times but it was all so beautiful!

Soubriquet · 27/10/2019 14:17

Yeah I’m pretending the very last season of OUAT doesn’t exist.

So Henry is still a kid and it ends on a nice ending

Wizzbangpop · 27/10/2019 14:41

Gossip Girl - Dan being GG made no sense. The way he was shocked about serena potentially being pregnant or the way he posted about Little J his own sister sometimes. And various times he was reached shocked about stuff yet he wrote it.

pinksparkleunicorns · 27/10/2019 15:06

@VanyaHargreeves I think that's what many people were upset about, no one had a clue what the letter was (including Lorlei) x

Egghead68 · 27/10/2019 20:10

Queer as Folk was great until they did an awful 10-years-later type episode.

VanyaHargreeves · 04/12/2019 19:48

I had resurrect the thread to add to this as I've just tried to watch the one off 90 minute episode ending of

Transparent

this was such an interesting series

The all musical movie ending may be the worst TV concept anyone ever conceived of.

joCmummy · 04/12/2019 20:00

Soooo many.

Ok cancellation of firefly
Buffy (post angel) up to the last season
Last season of DS9
Any time anyone used the words remake
I'm sure there's like a million more but I'm sick and have only seen Disney, scooby doo and hallmark Xmas movies for days. I need to get better asap of my brain will dribble out of my ears.

MayFayner · 04/12/2019 20:15

Agree with many of the above but also
-Marcella season 2 wtaf
-Dublin murders - just Confused
-Jessica Jones - starts off amazing but quickly goes shite

I’m sure there’s many many more

Artesia · 04/12/2019 22:27

@CoolCarrie - I didn’t realise Home Fires carried on in books. Do they just pick up where the tv series ended? I really enjoyed it and was gutted when they just left us hanging

LoseLooseLucy · 04/12/2019 22:57

My So Called Life

Lost

Heroes

GoT

Walking Dead

ImportantWater · 04/12/2019 23:09

Completely agree about Sherlock towards the end. It was like fan fiction. But not about Dr Who - I love Donna, apart from her ending, and I like Capaldi, although I wasn’t keen on a few of his episodes with Clara. I wasn’t keen on Tennant and Piper together, although I like them separately. Basically I feel Dr Who goes up and down enough to stick with.
I tell you what I really hated though - that series of Torchwood where nobody could die. My God it was tedious and disappointing. I don’t know if that was the last series or not.

VanyaHargreeves · 04/12/2019 23:16

I don't get the hate for Clara on Doctor Who at all, the impossible girl storyline was a waste, but, overall I liked the character. Maisie Williams was also great in the episodes she did.
For me, I barely watched Capaldi's last series, I never engaged with him as the Doctor AT ALL. I wanted to be on board with Jodie Whitaker so badly, but it has nothing to do with her being a woman, the writing is TERRIBLE and has really gone back to an immature CBBC approach, I lasted 4 episodes I think.

Better Call Saul is brilliant, I agree @StinkGhoul One of my all time favourites, can't wait til February

Another vote for Sherlock which began so well and then disappeared up its own arse.
The Walking Dead also - the pp who said it descended into endless boring gunfights just about summed it up.
I also don't much like the last season of The Office (US), they ruined Andy's character and made him behave horribly just so they could end with a Jim and Pam rehash with Erin and whatshisface. I'll admit to being oddly fond of Andy so it really annoyed me Blush

HeavenOrSpace · 05/12/2019 03:21

On and need I mention the dreadful Scrubs spin-off. Didn't work at all, I think most fans like to pretend it never happened.

Nat6999 · 05/12/2019 03:24

Anyone thinking about Home Fires, the writer of the series has written a book that follows on from where the series ended, it ties up a lot of the loose ends. It's called A woman's war by S Block if anyone wants to read it.

Agree GOT season 8 was rubbish.

I got a bit passed Dr Who. I think there is still an episode of two from the last series recorded on my Freeview box. Not bothered enough to watch it but can't bring myself to watch it.

bastardseverywhere · 06/12/2019 17:45

The royle family .

No one was more a die hard fan than me but it should have stopped at the "queen of Sheba" episode when nana died .

It was bloody brilliant up until that point .

I'm hoping and praying I'm not going to be saying the same thing about gavin & Stacey in a few weeks !

DarlingNikita · 07/12/2019 17:32

My biggest disappointment is Sherlock too. Started SO well (rewatch the first series, especially the first episode; it's a pure delight) and got SO shit.
Classic Steven Moffat ego-fest, with his wife as 'producer' not trying/able to rein him in at all. It went downhill when they ditched the GP John was starting to date (they had PERFECT chemistry) and brought in his RL partner instead. Using BC's real parents was indulgent too. And all the on-screen mind palace rubbish. Last episode was just like a succession of Crystal Maze rooms, designed only to show off the 'cleverness' of the writing.
SUCH a crushing disappointment.
