EE runs on a parallel universe.
Childcare isn't an issue ; visas and money ebb and flow. Moving out requires one bag and can be arranged in hours. Gangsters come and go; people get off on murder charges and businesses run themselves ( unless plots require them to be sold )
Kirsty is horrible. I hope she doesn't hang about.

SalemSpellman · 29/10/2019 20:30

Does Jags remind anyone of else of Pugsley Addams? Pugsley Addams wearing a baseball cap and eating constantly.

IWorkAtTheCheescakeFactory · 29/10/2019 21:23

Urgh. Fake welsh dotty just said “has anyone brought food from this man?” She should be sacked for that.

southeastdweller · 30/10/2019 08:55

I don't see the point of the Panesar brothers. The show needs a character cull, not further additions.

iknowimcoming · 30/10/2019 09:09

I agree with you south - I actually sighed when I realised they were ash's brothers altho I must day the older one is very handsome!

SoupDragon · 30/10/2019 10:12

I think they are trying to even up the racial mix. Saying that, have they ever had and East Asian characters? They seem to stick to Black and the Indian sub-continent.

southeastdweller · 30/10/2019 10:56

I've been watching since the beginning and don't recall any East Asian characters in EE Shock

The80sweregreat · 30/10/2019 11:09

They had a Turkish character once but never any Asians ( that I recall anyway)!Good to see some diversity as the East-end is very diverse in real life.

SoupDragon · 30/10/2019 11:48

Yes, they've had Turkish and an assortment of Europeans but I still can't think of any East Asian characters at all.

Given how this thread has gone in the past, I fully expect a family to move in in the next week or so.

Spidey66 · 30/10/2019 11:59

The diversity in EE is crap. In reality, that part of East London would be at least 60% Asian. (My estimate, I don't know for a fact.)

Spidey66 · 30/10/2019 12:06

OK Wiki says the population of Tower Hamlets (which is apparently the part of East London where Albert Square is set) is made up of 55% BAME, and my estimation of the numbers of Asian was higher than it actually is, but still.

White: British 31%
White: Irish 2%

I’m trying to think of all the soaps I know and I can’t recall any of them ever having an east Asian character!

JemimaTab · 30/10/2019 15:28

It always annoys me to an irrational extent when the soaps get the practical stuff wrong - visas / work permits when they go abroad is a prime example. Currently, the fact they haven’t even mentioned the need for the appropriate licences when setting up a food business is annoying me. I wouldn’t necessarily expect Keegan to know this but Iqra certainly should. I guess the scriptwriters must write from their own experience and it is not researched.
Robbie’s comeback was a bit of a non-event. He hardly had any storylines and kept disappearing off to India for months at a time. In the big pub siege a few weeks back, he was just sat at the back looking completely concerned. I don’t think he’ll be missed.

Spidey66 · 30/10/2019 15:32

:thicko: What countries are in East Asia? If we're talking Bangladesh, I agree EE is woefully short. They appear to only have token BAME characters. And characters from, say, Asian countries in EE always talk English at home, regardless if this was unlikely in a ''real'' family who would talk their mother tongue.

(And yes of course I know this is for the viewing public!)

IWorkAtTheCheescakeFactory · 30/10/2019 15:39

Yes! Back in the days of classic EE this sort of stuff would have formed part of the storyline. They did have discussed what licenses they needed, dropped into discussion they were just going to apply for their certification, waiting for the kitchen inspection, whether or not it passed etc. It was all just part of the script. The same with money/benefits etc. The just talked a bout they says to day stuff people went through. Nowadays it’s totally glossed over in favour of big drama.

Mrsjayy · 30/10/2019 15:41

East Asia : China, Japan, both koreas taiwan I can't think of anymore but you catch my drift Smile

Spidey66 · 30/10/2019 15:43

And yes about the visas! Masoud decided he was going to emigrate to Oz and it took about a week to get the money together, sort visas, housing and jobs and he was gone and as far as I know had never been there before!

IWorkAtTheCheescakeFactory · 30/10/2019 15:45

Yes and when they do speak in anything but English the subtitles don’t translate it and just say “speaks own language”. Two problems with that

  1. English is also their own language too! Why can’t they say “speaks Urdu” or whatever the language is?

  2. why can’t they subtitle the speech so the viewer can understand it?

Spidey66 · 30/10/2019 15:45

Ah OK thanks....no I don't remember any either!

Mrsjayy · 30/10/2019 15:46

Just googled and there is also Mongolia hong kong and Macau which is an autonimous country.

Mrsjayy · 30/10/2019 15:47

In China*

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 30/10/2019 23:05

Back in the day they had Ali and Mehmet who argued in Turkish in the cafe/mini cabs .

Then they had the Ferreira family but they only stayed a couple of years . (And the actor who played Ash is on Corrie (as Sineads onologist ) but as Sinead has gone I think he should waft his way back to E20)

RowenaMud · 30/10/2019 23:37

The UK is still in the EU so shouldn’t have any restrictions about relocating to other European countries for now. From what I can make out from the golden visa link above, it seems more for non EU members? Mel wouldn’t have any trouble moving there. Then again, this is EE and nobody has any trouble going to Australia, New Zealand, America or South Africa!

Sharon should be delighted to get rid of Keanu. I’m guessing she got Phil to buy a villa (never an apt like everyone else buys as a holiday home!) and will get it transferred into Mel’s name without telling Phil. But.... won’t Phil the international business person and crime lord want to use it when he is ‘taking care of business’ in Portugal (now he seems to have finished taking care of business in Spain and Italy!). What will EE script writers do about Brexit when Phil needs go apply for visas for all his business trips!

What are the chances the brothers know Chantelle? Wouldn’t they know Keanu and Keegan too then? Wonder if he is an old friend and she confides in him? The Grey and Chantelle storyline must be coming to a head?

Optimist1 · 31/10/2019 08:17

Rowena - the two younger brothers did talk about Chantelle being at school with them. The middle brother had clocked her coming out of her house.

The80sweregreat · 31/10/2019 08:31

Wouldn't it be nice to see Chantelle with a nice man happy and cheerful! Come on writers, make this a positive story after all the angst of living with abuse. Her and the kids deserve some fun. Or just living alone but happier !
