Just watching the ceremony now - Rafa was proper sobbing when they showed the montage of his achievements (so was I!) He did look as if he needed a hug.

I do like Medvedev - I agree he does seem different from the other Next Genners - I knew he was a goody Grin

I also thought the referee was out of order giving Rafa that time violation - it could have cost him the Championship.

Fizzywinegum · 09/09/2019 11:28

I have to say both players look pretty good after playing for nearly five hours - they must be amazingly fit.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 09/09/2019 13:53

magi safe and happy travels!

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 09/09/2019 13:58

I’m so lucky to be in the right time zone! I was on the edge of my seat (and no handy dog to hide behind although I don’t think I have any fingernails left!!) What a match.

I cried too when Rafa cried. 19 slams, just wow. What an accomplishment.

The presentation was really nice, they both said such nice things about the match & about each other.

Adelie0404 · 09/09/2019 15:56

I made it til the end but kept popping out to the kitchen to do things at critical moments - cleaned the fridge etc. Yes the time violation was so out of order. The umpires are supposed to use their discretion, not be absolute bastards.
Rafa was “tight” as they say - nervous. He missed an overhead - he never does that! He didn’t play his best but it was enough - just. Medvedev was very impressive - his anticipation of Rafa’s shots was really good. DD1 wants to watch this evening - we’ll have to do an hour an evening. She doesn’t know who won.
Well done Rafa!!

PrivateSpidey · 09/09/2019 16:46

Aw that's exciting Adelie, to watch with your unknowing DD! Hope she enjoys it.

No wonder Rafa was so emosh after the victory - if he'd won in straight sets I wonder if he'd have been the same? Or if it was more that he had to cling on to win? Brilliant stuff.

Caught up with the Tennis Podcast earlier and they were wondering whether it's been Rafa's best season? 2 Slams, RU and SF of the other two, defended Toronto etc. It's pretty amazing when you think about it.

last slam of the year still the ATP finals, or whatever it's called , has it changed its name? I used to have that as my pre Christmas treat but gave up because I couldn't stand watching in the O2. The constant coming and going, the smelly food, the spilled drink, and the blooming talking during play. Not to mention O2 security takin my m and s Belgium chocolate toffee popcorn off me, twice . But mainly the talking, omg the talking..........

JaneJeffer · 09/09/2019 19:00

the spilled drink, I thought this said spiked drink at first and was Shock until I read it again Grin

viques · 09/09/2019 20:08

spiked drink Grin

Am just watching the last set on catch up. I am so pleased I didn't watch it last night, my heart would have stopped! Are we really sure Rafa won, they are on game three and to be honest Medvedev is playing like a demon, and from where I am sitting looks like a shoo in.

mama1980 · 09/09/2019 20:46

Hi all, I've Missed this whole thread and most of the US open...it's been chaos here but I did stay up to watch Rafa win last night. Amazing match and lovely speeches at the end....just perfect.

Medvedev definitely did himself proud, I almost (and only almost Grin) wanted him to win after all that effort, against anyone else I would have been cheering him on.
So thrilled Rafa had enough to win though.....such an incredible year for him.

PrivateSpidey · 09/09/2019 21:05

Hi mama nice to see you Smile

I was in awe watching those last two sets just on the replay. I so wish I'd stayed up for it all Sad it would have been absolutely nail biting!

I know what you mean about almost wanting Medvedev to win - you just have to take your hat off to him don't you, what an effort.

I agree with viques as well, if I'd watched it live I would have been expecting Medvedev to win it. Can't believe how Rafa just guts-ed it out Shock well, I can, because that's how good he is, but still. It was brilliant, they were both so good.

The ATP finals is now known as the World Tour Finals or WTFs Hmm not sure they thoroughly consulted the marketing department on that one.

I might try and go again this year since it's its second last (I think?) time in London. It is a bit much with all the music/lights/noise etc but I don't mind it too much - it's a bit different. Although I think one/two matches' worth is plenty!

I’m missing the tennis and the chat Sad. I’m even doing some housework Grin. DH is happy that he can watch something other than tennis (football!)

I’m still in awe of Rafa’s achievement in winning that match - I’m slightly surprised at all the articles and comments about how people didn’t realise how great Rafa was - I think they see him winning 12 French Opens as not really being much of an achievement probably because he made it look relatively easy Hmm. So pleased for Rafa that hopefully other people will appreciate him as much as we do

So what’s next apart from the WTFs? I went once but didn’t really enjoy it. The seats are really steep and all the noise and swirling lights didn’t help my vertigo. Most players are pretty knackered or injured by the time they get there.

Oh and we’ve got the wedding to look forward to in October - can’t wait! Smile

JaneJeffer · 10/09/2019 12:09

people didn’t realise how great Rafa was
Fecking eejits Grin

PrivateSpidey · 10/09/2019 13:21

Yep, eejits are everywhere Grin

I think because people think of Rafa as a "clay courter" but he's not just that at all. He's won more US Opens than Djok!! It's really brilliant, love him and so pleased for him.

Sorry to hear about the housework Fizzy. I think it's about two weeks until Andy Murray plays in China which is bound to be on Amazon, and then don't forget Delpo's comeback next month as well. But at the no it's a bit flat isn't it, especially after that brilliant weekend of finals!

Ooh yes the wedding. I hope they do publish some photos. I'd buy Hello!/Hola! for those, definitely Grin

OP posts:
Fizzywinegum · 10/09/2019 13:37

Fecking eejits indeed Grin

I’ll have to book my hairdressers appt for around Rafa’s wedding so that I can read Hello! I said this to DH and he thought I was having my hair done especially for Rafa’s wedding (still holding out for that invite Grin)

Excited (and a bit nervous) for Delpo’s comeback.

JaneJeffer · 10/09/2019 13:43

Ha ha Our poor DH's. Mine said yesterday morning you've been on your phone for ages and I said I have to see Rafa! Grin

Raahh · 10/09/2019 14:26

I have been reading about Bianca's dog. She wasn't supposed to be allowed in the match, but she had her own photo pass. It says 'Coco- pet' Grin.

JaneJeffer · 10/09/2019 15:28

She was probably better behaved than some of the spectators.

PrivateSpidey · 10/09/2019 16:28

Not sure quite what's going on here Grin

Do you think he was just really keen for a photo?!
