I couldn't find a Grand Designs thread for this new series...

Did anyone watch this weeks?!

OP posts:
Justmuddlingalong · 05/09/2019 22:43

Me. The setting was spectacular, but I didn't love the house. £170000 over budget was eyewatering. And poor Nemo.

Tonnerre · 05/09/2019 23:41

I may have missed something explaining this, but I couldn't help wondering why they weren't worried about coastal erosion.

covetingthepreciousthings · 06/09/2019 07:31

Yes I agree about the erosion, that would have been a massive panic for me. I bet their insurance was a nightmare too..

I'd have hated to be one of the workmen when they were having to carry those panes of glass in that wind Shock

Interestingly.. I saw a tweet that said they were surprised there was no mention whatsoever of the upset, disruption and damage that was caused to their neighbours with this build!

I thought that they might have tried to include some of the original building in the build.

That's interesting @covetingthepreciousthings was the tweet from a neighbour? I wonder what the story is there.

I liked it, but I think the location was too exposed to the elements for me.

covetingthepreciousthings · 06/09/2019 21:44

Here's the tweet...

Oh, well that's a bit awkward isn't it.

Carriemac · 07/09/2019 09:49

They were a weirdly unlike able couple
And what was her job?

Freaking0ut · 07/09/2019 09:51

She came across as particularly miserable. It all seemed quite strange

LizzieMacQueen · 07/09/2019 12:11

I watched this last night. I couldn't figure out how they could keep the dogs (or anyone, imagine little kids!) away from the cliff edge.

I imagine the inconvenience of the build, what with the narrow roads, was what was upsetting the neighbours. But you get that with a lot of new builds.

Pipe dreams though - definitely felt it was his dream not hers.

They had big glass screens at the edge of their property. Then the big rocks to stop the dogs clambering onto the roof.

Thanks @covetingthepreciousthings
It is unusual that wasn't mentioned on the programme, normally they love to include the drama!

mummabubs · 07/09/2019 14:46

I normally find something to love in each house but I can honestly say their dream would be my my nightmare! The view I suppose was literally the one redeeming feature for me. Agree that the wife seemed emotionally detached from the process (until she didn't like the stones, then she was interested in the build all of a sudden!) In any event I hope they're very happy there now.

redchocolatebutton · 07/09/2019 16:55

I always wonder how they do it without polish builders. or are they just not shown?

bonkers house
bonkers location
bonkers couple

Tidypidy · 07/09/2019 21:28

It all seemed quite gloomy to us, dark furniture and fittings, dark cliffs, dreadful weather. Nothing we liked at all which as a pp said is unusual.

thenightsky · 07/09/2019 21:38

I liked the finished house. The neighbours didn't look very close anyway.

funmummy48 · 09/09/2019 08:01

Have only just watched this. I liked the house & the beautiful view but thought the interior was gloomy and cheerless. I'm all for a bit of grey but the house was totally lacking in colour. I'd have felt depressed living in it.

Tonnerre · 13/09/2019 02:42

Did anyone else watch this week's stressing about how that man was risking his back and waiting for the announcement that he'd done irreversible damage? I think if it were my husband I'd have hidden all his clothes to stop him going back to the site directly against medical advice after undergoing surgery.

NewYoiker · 13/09/2019 04:07

I watched this weeks episode.. I can't believe how much they spent on it!

NewYoiker · 13/09/2019 04:27

Oops posted too soon...
did anyone else like it? I thought it was ok until she decorated it Blush 8k on this? It's a monstrosity! Also that sink was horrible and Kevin's face when he saw the alien was amazing 😂

Also does anyone like to play grand designs bingo?

Spends 45k on glass.. it's the wrong size
Lives in a caravan and gets pregnant
House isn't built and it's raining but they move in anyway
They're over budget
Kevin in a big scarf
'We'll be in by Christmas'
'And then the snow came'
Windows and flooring that will be impossible to clean
SmileGrin

I love grand designs!

Freaking0ut · 13/09/2019 06:40

Grin @NewYoiker spot on with that Bingo!

I now know I am officially a boring old fart because my first reaction to that sink was ‘how do you wash up in that?’

The whole thing left me a bit Confused this week. Such a lovely site and then it looked like it had had a business park built on it. I’m amazed they got it through planning. Oh well each to their own I guess!

gingercat02 · 13/09/2019 13:41

I liked the house and the idea of all the out buildings (particlarly the pool but not the dog cage) I would hope if i had a £million plus i would build something more attractive (to me) and definitely furnish it differently.
Planners probably weren't fussed when the site already has lodges on it.
What was the round thing in the lake?

Carriemac · 13/09/2019 13:46

That was a hot tub :)
they were nice though, self made, a bit flash but really appreciateive of their hous eand hard work to get it.

FAQs · 13/09/2019 15:19

Loved the Scottish one, it just needed some chunky knits and a bit of colour, I didn’t think she appeared as miserable.

I’ve not sent the others yet but the sofa in the image above, awful.

EntirelyAnonymised · 13/09/2019 15:24

This week’s was fucking amazing Grin. Lovely couple but WTF were they think with that decor?! I laughed when she said ‘Icelandic style’ (I was thinking sort of scandi minimalist) and then pointed to the joint smoking alien as an example. Hilariously awful. Obviously she was thinking more ‘Björk’s Oscar’s swan dress’ as Icelandic inspo.

EntirelyAnonymised · 13/09/2019 15:24

*thinking
