I couldn't find a Grand Designs thread for this new series...

Did anyone watch this weeks?!

OP posts:
redchocolatebutton · 22/10/2019 08:08

perhaps people doing a course at the airfield? or people doing a trapeze course?

SleepingStandingUp · 22/10/2019 09:24

Yes but would that really run to a business in itself. Maybe it's more fun than I imagine 😂Just seems like a fairly sensible build to live in.

impostersyndrome · 02/11/2019 15:01

Is anyone watching House of the Year? I liked the two smaller houses that were shortlisted, but the second episode’s mansion was absurdly big and the first episode’s weird brick pseudo castle seemed like a mad folly.

And all those black boxes that’ll go out of fashion in a few years.

Still, at least no misery, or bankruptcies, or divorces, like in the regular series

InMySpareTime · 02/11/2019 15:03

I thought the black box from this week looked like a goth version of Deep Thought from Hitchhikers.

impostersyndrome · 02/11/2019 16:10

Hmm I don’t know that allusion, but it doesn’t sound very complimentary!

InMySpareTime · 02/11/2019 17:20

This is Deep Thought, the computer that found the answer, the ultimate answer, to life, the universe, and everything!

@InMySpareTime 🤣🤣😂

impostersyndrome · 02/11/2019 21:45

Yup, I was right. Not very flattering Grin.

WaningGibbous · 03/11/2019 13:43

I've quite liked some of the houses but this week the gun bunker house, the black shed and the university hall of residence house were awful. It didn't help that the non-Kevin presenter was soooooo gushing about how beautiful the gun bunker house was and I'm shouting 'No it looks like a pillar box' and he was loving the Hampshire stone one and how unique it was and I'm thinking nope that's university halls of residence circa 1980.

impostersyndrome · 03/11/2019 15:46

Haha, I love your one-line descriptions WaningGibbous!

This reminds me of my own issue with the lack of windows on several of the schemes (other than the bird-watching one, which I thought had beautiful integration with the landscape, and fun staircase, but as with a lot of these homes built for older couples, I'm wondering how long till it becomes impossible to use).

SleepingStandingUp · 03/11/2019 23:54

I adored the bird watching one, def one of my favourites so far and actually like the big Manor one and all that wood but I went to Uni in tbe new Millennium so perhaps it's just doesn't have the same connotations for me Re Halls lol

So bored of black xladding.

SleepingStandingUp · 06/11/2019 23:07

What the hell? How did the grey box of doom beat that stunning Y shape house with the cathedral living room??

InMySpareTime · 07/11/2019 06:24

So I wasn't the only one shouting at the TV "The Bunker! Why the bunker?Confused".
DH got in late and asked what was on Grand Designs this week. My summary was "you didn't miss much, 2 barns, a garden shed and a soviet bunker"

SleepingStandingUp · 07/11/2019 08:26

Haha nope. I adored the Y house, but everything else was meh.
Grey House of doom that has less personality that I can ever imagine a house having.
The retreat that was OK, outside and location was cool was had nothing comforting and retreaty inside. Deserved second place.
The old man's house with bars up the window.
The barn houses.
I mean, seriosuly how did my Y house lose??

DecomposingDurannie · 07/11/2019 09:27

Have just watched this..... totally agree with previous posters re the minimal and bunker like homes: so cold and clinical and dreary.....Y shaped barn was fabulous and I'd have moved in in a heartbeat... I'm so not a minimal person though, not tidy enough!

ElGuardiandenoche · 07/11/2019 12:23

Totally agree. The Y house was gorgeous.

I seem to spend most of my time yelling at the tv at the moment what with Strictly, Landscape Artist and Grand Designs.

ZoChan · 08/11/2019 21:04

Who is renting that retreat?! It must be extortionate!

SleepingStandingUp · 09/11/2019 20:06

4k a week for 10 people

impostersyndrome · 10/11/2019 21:10

4k! Yikes! Wasn’t it someone’s 40th? I know the trees were gorgeous and the architect very prestigious (according to the VIP JUDGE), but really, that was not a place that felt haven like. More like an upmarket youth hostel, cheap looking (eye-wateringly expensive, I’m sure) furniture and all. The pub where they filmed the locals looked much more appealing, though I get the sense the retreat visitors won’t be using it, unless they need a bed for the night after they run away.

impostersyndrome · 14/11/2019 22:28

Did anyone see the final? The Polish builder was a delight, wasn’t he, with his perfectly crafted house. I’ll gloss over that weirdly OTT specced house with a copper roof. The wooden house should have won in my opinion. Beautiful, perfectly sited, gorgeously quirky rooms that were properly fitted to their use. Yet what won? That cold, miserable pile of grey boxes. Fume.

DecomposingDurannie · 15/11/2019 07:22

I agree... my winner would have been the wooden tree house one (Green House iirc).... too many concrete bunkers on the short list imo.... the weird copper roofed house I liked from outside ( that you'd never see if you lived in it due to the cramped location!) but I hated the interior and the only thing I could think when looking at the inside if that quirky roof was " what a dust trap, how would you even get up there to clean it?"

CuteOrangeElephant · 15/11/2019 07:29

I really liked the Roman Villa from the first episode.

SleepingStandingUp · 15/11/2019 09:23

Any winner would have been more deserving that the Grey Box Of Doom aka "Depression Built"

I loved the villa one from earlier on, the bird watching one, the wooden one from this week and the one with the wall of glass windows from this week. I'd have given it to either of the middle two.

But def not Doom Box
