Poor Janine

AllInTheBestPossibleTaste · 11/08/2019 22:04

Is she gonna lie?

AllInTheBestPossibleTaste · 11/08/2019 22:05

Buzz me too!

TeaStory · 11/08/2019 22:06

I love that the Marthas communicate via baked goods. It reminded me a little of some of the ingenious ways people have communicated via small arts and crafts, like some of the things I saw in the V&A Disobedient Objects exhibition.

CaptainMyCaptain · 11/08/2019 22:06

Continuity errors with walking - my knee is a bit like that though. Grin
So is Serena planning to get Nichole by getting out of Gilead herself or is she going to try tricking the American agent?

EmpressLesbianInChair · 11/08/2019 22:06

I’m glad she lied to Janine.

CaptainMyCaptain · 11/08/2019 22:09

It was the kindest thing to do. Janine can be happy imagining him on the beach.

AllInTheBestPossibleTaste · 11/08/2019 22:09

empress me too

SudowoodoVoodoo · 11/08/2019 22:09

I liked the irony of June giving CL the handmaids' survival tips for getting through the ceremony. There was a detailed scene about it in series 2 wasn't there?

AllInTheBestPossibleTaste · 11/08/2019 22:10

Love it!!!!!

hungryhippie · 11/08/2019 22:10

That was a risk for Serena, suggesting contacting the American. Fred didn't seem best pleased! I'm assuming she's suggesting that the both get out?

theGirlWithManyFaces · 11/08/2019 22:10

So looks like things are taking inspiration from schindlers list - wonder where serena will sit in this.

Fred won't give up his power for the baby especially as he knows she isn't his. Wonder what this will push Serena to do

EmpressLesbianInChair · 11/08/2019 22:11

I liked the irony of June giving CL the handmaids' survival tips for getting through the ceremony.

I think that brought home to him exactly what he’s created.

viques · 11/08/2019 22:14

Poor Janine, it's a bit like that cartoon, "they've killed Kenny" , but in this case it's "they've buggered up Janine". Bet she is the first to be honoured with a lip ring and face mask, poor thing.

Was thinking during the Fred/Serena scene how very pissed Fred is going to be if /when he burns his boats with Gilead then finds out that the child isn't even his and he has been well and truly betrayed. All that guff earlier in the episode about commanders who don't fulfill their duty. Well guess who that is Fred.

theGirlWithManyFaces · 11/08/2019 22:15

@viques June and serena have already told Fred that the baby isn't his

Clawdy · 11/08/2019 22:17

I can't see how June's plan to get the children out could work. If the kids have been in another family for a few years, they will think they are being removed from their parents, and will refuse to go with strangers, surely? Or are they just taking babies out?

Crinkle77 · 11/08/2019 22:19

Well have to say I wasn't disappointed tonight.

AnotherEmma · 11/08/2019 22:19

Great episode. It's finally getting interesting!

Agree with PP about hypocrisy of Fred claiming that Joseph can't control his household.

The ceremony scenes were so tense and poignant - agree about the irony of June insisting on it and coaching Joseph through it.

He of course is despicable, having created this world while thinking he was above the rules Hmm

I think June was probably right to tell Janine the white lie about her son. If it was me I think I'd prefer the lie to the truth.

There were some implausibilities in the plot (and some continuity errors)... for example after Joseph offered June the pills, she said they would have to do the ceremony again - well, obviously, that's why he offered the pills!

Also the line about a bigger boat annoyed me a bit when she had been talking about a truck up to that point... was it a reference to something else?

Anyway it's all getting rather exciting and I might have to watch ahead now. IIRC I think episodes 11 and 12 have already been shown elsewhere and episode 13 will be shown on Wednesday... very tempting!

Crinkle77 · 11/08/2019 22:21

Clawdy didn't she something about getting the older ones out so perhaps they would remember being taken from their parents?

AnotherEmma · 11/08/2019 22:22

Oh and I didn't like the fact that Serena told Fred about her contact in Canada and gave him the phone... he is NEVER going to do what she is asking (he cares much more about his career in Gilead than Nichole or even Serena). And now Serena has lost her option for escaping without Fred knowing about it. She seems loyal to him now but perhaps she is playing a very strategic game? Idk

Skaife · 11/08/2019 22:22

@BuzzShitbagBobbly

Lawrence didn’t invent the ceremony.

There is a scene in series 1. Fred, Pryce and another Commander are being driven by Nick and the 3 Commanders come up with the ceremony. After the coup. Pryce isn’t keen on the idea but is outvoted.

Lawrence is responsible for the economic systems of Gilead.

BedraggledBlitz · 11/08/2019 22:23

The bigger boat line was a quote from Jaws @anotheremma

AnotherEmma · 11/08/2019 22:23

Oh yes of course 🤦🏻‍♀️

yogima · 11/08/2019 22:24

What happened to Janine's son? I realised that June was lying out of kindness but i didn't catch what had really happened to him. Did it say in the notes?

sweetkitty · 11/08/2019 22:24
