Just finished it. I haven't processed it enough to say anything coherent quite yet but I'm feeling all emotional. Going to miss it immensely.

OP posts:

Watched the whole 3rd series over the weekend.
Jason annoyed me and I really liked Kelly.
But it all ended well.

EdWinchester · 28/05/2019 11:38

Yes that dreadful baggy red shirt and a dreary skirt and flats.

BertrandRussell · 28/05/2019 12:07

“Yes that dreadful baggy red shirt and a dreary skirt and flats.”
As opposed to a body con dress and stilettos for a garden party?

Why do you want her to have a complete personality transplant?

EdWinchester · 28/05/2019 12:59

No, but her wardrobe was inconsistent and implausible. And she has a good figure and much of the time wears fitted clothes, so why for a party would she wear something so baggy and dreary?

I would bet that the costume designer is a man.

diddl · 28/05/2019 15:12

" And although the ending was romantic, I think it was 'wrong' - the characters would both have felt obliged to help out at the party."

I'm not sure.

They were both supposed to be guests & it was probably Pauline speaking to her as if she was the help that made her decide she wouldn't be.

That & Jason saying about her being confused, to keep things low key as she wouldn't be with Michael for long.

I think that a lot of Michael's helpfulness was to see Cathy so I don't think that he would have minded!

BertrandRussell · 28/05/2019 15:16

I agree. I think the ending was incredibly true to the story. That last scene with Jason was just awful- I can’t stand him. And him breaking the clingfilm to eat the canapés.......

LoafofSellotape · 28/05/2019 15:27

I think Jason is a product of his father's upbringing. I feel quite sorry for him in some ways, his father was obviously a very big character awful man and in time he'll see him for what he was- overbearing and 'traditional.' he was beginning to see what his dad was like by the end of the last episode,I think there will be more of that once he's a dad himself.

Breaking the clingfilm would NOT happen on this house,I can tell you that for sure!!Shock

SAHMlikeitHOT · 28/05/2019 15:28

I think one of the others said something like 'who's going to hand out the burgers now'. I found the pace very slow - when you compare it to Lee and Dean for instance, but there were gems that were so worth waiting for!

LoafofSellotape · 28/05/2019 15:31

I agree, it was perfect for her. It would've been ridiculous if she's rocked up in tight clothes and high heels,it was a family BBQ.

BertrandRussell · 28/05/2019 15:36

I liked the red shirt!

LoafofSellotape · 28/05/2019 15:38

So did I and it suited her!

diddl · 28/05/2019 15:43

I quite liked the shirt-just not with the skirt!

BertrandRussell · 28/05/2019 16:06

She was much more appropriately dressed for a family barbecue than Pauline was.....

grupple · 28/05/2019 16:10

How did she not slap Jason's hand when he broke the clingfilm?

LoafofSellotape · 28/05/2019 16:10

I also thought the ending was perfect, it was brilliant. I might have to watch from the beginning again.

BertrandRussell · 28/05/2019 16:29

I tell you what was jarring. Kelly water pistolling Michael. That just seemed bizarre. No explanation for it at all.

diddl · 28/05/2019 16:39

It wasn't a family bbq though-Derek had bussed in 20 friends!Grin

Yeah the water pistol-wtf was that all about?

To show she was as ridiculous/unaware as ever?

And wouldn't she be one to huff off whining about hair/make up/clothes ruined if it happeed to her?

The80sweregreat · 28/05/2019 17:17

The water pistol thing was awful. I would have been fuming.
Kelly isn't always the best at seeing when someone doesn't want to do something.
She wouldn't have done it to Pauline!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 28/05/2019 19:58

It broke my heart in Series 1/2 when Kelly said she laughs whenever her mum was cruel to her.

I actually cried at this bit Helmut - the entire episode where her mother was wisecracking and "joking" - but with that edge of spite - really upset me.

It's the sort of cruelty that passes for humour on shows like "Roseanne". It encourages people to talk to each other in that sort of "fun" way, and it's indescribably cruel.

The sort of remark bullies make and then when someone gets upset claims that they are joking, and if anyone gets upset it's because they "have no sense of humour".

Bastards.

I remember my dad saying that in real life the cast of Friends wouldn't actually be friends because they're so awful to each other!

diddl · 28/05/2019 20:42

" It encourages people to talk to each other in that sort of "fun" way, "

Do you really think that it does though?

The80sweregreat · 28/05/2019 20:54

I hate all that ' winding people up' type of chat in real life , but then I'm a sensitive soul. The only ones not to do it were Michael and Cathy! Some people think it's clever , but I just see it as a bit crass if it's constant. A bit of light banter is fine but you need boundaries i think.
Kelly's mum is the type of woman i actively avoid in real life! Lol.

Bravo Stefan Golaszewski !

This ^

In Spades!

And Bravo to superb cast! There wasn't a single weak performance.

Iloveredwoods · 29/05/2019 09:18

I loved the ending. Everyone else had behaved so badly at times, and then Jason's 'low key' speech - Cathy must finally have felt, fuck them, time to put herself first.

I think Kelly was very slowly developing some maturity, and hopefully this will rub off on Jason. And this must have helped Cathy, because Kelly worships her and will therefore bring Jason on side eventually. (Having said that, I was warming to Jason after he broke down, but that last speech just showed him up).

Loads of amazing dialogue and acting. Best line - there's nothing worse than driving a Lexus after a Porsche, and Pauline muttering 'genocide'.
