Just finished it. I haven't processed it enough to say anything coherent quite yet but I'm feeling all emotional. Going to miss it immensely.

I think Jason's u-turn was perfect, and real

It would've been too saccharine and unrealistic to end "nicely"

I spent much of this series shouting at Cathy DON'T LET HIM SOEAK TO YOU LIKE THAT!!!SAY SOMETHING, WOMAN!!!

But of course that wouldn't be Cathy. The gentle way she handled her son was beautifully done, showing respect for both him and her late husband

Not that it's how I'd do it!

diddl · 29/05/2019 15:19

"Cathy must finally have felt, fuck them, time to put herself first"

I think it might also have been to show Jason as he wasn't listening & the walking away-thay they'll all have to get on & stop relying on her/taking her for granted.

But if you say "do you have to"?-the expected answer is no, isn't it?

"Not with Kelly!" -well she does seem to have matured, so maybe there was a chance, however slightGrin

Michael wouldn't have given a flat no, would he?

Although maybe now that he & Cathy have left them behind, he won't feel the need to be so accommodating.

LoafofSellotape · 29/05/2019 18:06

I think the water pistol thing was to illustrate just how utterly childish she is.

I'd have found it hard not to lamp someone who did that to me!

AppleKatie · 29/05/2019 18:19

I think it was Kelly playing with the cruelty to Michael - she started it, felt awful about it but couldn’t stop herself so just carried on. Like she was testing out the ‘banter’ trying to convince herself it was all in good fun but discovered in practice it wasn’t.

Iirc it was after that she had a bit of a turning point in attitude towards him.

Watched all three series in just over a week so good

Rewatching, I love how Pauline is written. There are quite a few moments when a decent person who is terribly vulnerable pierces through the oneupmanship.

When she mishears Cathy and insists she's never lonely, not when she has a puzzle mat so that she can take her puzzle to a cafe or when there are so many tv channels. Or at NYE, where Maureen is aiming the part popper into her face and Pauline angles it away.

What's Jason's job?

Puffinhead · 29/05/2019 22:28

Hi all, I’m new to thread. Loved all of it but actually preferred the first series though I’m glad there was a happy ending for Cathy and Michael. Derek winds me up though, he is soo needy! I would feel suffocated by his constant need to please.

CountFosco · 30/05/2019 06:47

What's Jason's job?

I don't think we ever found out, although he was offered a job in Australia in one of the earlier series which seemed incongruous with his apparent lack of intellect.

diddl · 30/05/2019 08:57

Yes the Australia think didn't really make sense, did it?

And then his declining it because of Kelly-but no awareness of Cathy & how she might feel?

I had always thought that it had been a lie & that there had never been a job offer.

The water pistol thing irritated me too; I was warming to Kelly up until then. My favourite bits of all three series were Reg dancing to Girls just wanna have fun and the time he and Maureen were talking about their son, eating their burgers and they just went silent. That silence was so poignant and sad. When Michael and Cathy were watching the fireworks and they held hands, with Jason glancing at them. When Cathy was at the fridge and M was dishing up his stew and she glanced at him, it was superbly subtle and just so right.

They're are all broken aren't they? I bet Cathy had to play the big protective sister because of their mum, hence she still treats Derek like a little boy, he still seeks her approval and praise.

Am jealous of those watching it weekly as it airs! The more I reflect on it, the more I admire it.

BertrandRussell · 30/05/2019 14:55

I reckon Kelly and Derek will end up together.

I’ve got a soft spot for Kelly and I think Jason is irredeemably vile. And I think there is hope for Derek if only he can recover from his depression. It would all be a bit incestuous though, I suppose.

LoafofSellotape · 30/05/2019 16:09

I reckon Kelly and Derek will end up together

Yes,crossed my mind too Smile
