Just finished it. I haven't processed it enough to say anything coherent quite yet but I'm feeling all emotional. Going to miss it immensely.

Am I alone in hoping they don't do a Christmas special? I mean, wild horses wouldn't keep me from watching it, but the ending here was so perfectly executed that anything else would feel too tacked-on.

I do love the thought of Reg with little KelJa though! (Jake for a boy though?)

I would love a special , but I also agree that it might be tacked on and spoil things maybe?
Unless the writer throws a curved ball it wouldn't really show us any more of their characters than we know already and might even disappoint.
Maybe best to leave it as it is thinking about it!

I watched 'him and her' ( same writer) but one episode is enough for me. it has similar characters but is quiet rude and not my demographic at all! Mum is more homely !

TraffordTansy · 20/05/2019 19:33

God, I LOVED Him & Her. That also had a great ending.

AuntMarch · 20/05/2019 20:56

Inliked Him &Her, although had forgotten. What about "Two doors down"? Not quite on a level with Mum, but watchable!

Tigresswoods · 20/05/2019 21:10

Jason breaking down about his dad was so good. My mum died 17 years ago & I hold it together all the time. Then once a year at Christmas or the anniversary I absolutely breakdown exactly like that. So well acted.

LizzieMacQueen · 20/05/2019 23:00

If you like a soppy Peter Mullan you must watch Sunshine on Leith.

Huntlybyelection · 21/05/2019 00:24

I think the last straw for Cathy was when Jason tore into the cling film covered smoked salmon canapes. It would have been for me anyway!

I loved this. I loved how even the worst characters did kind things .

EdWinchester · 21/05/2019 23:04

It was wonderful. Lesley Manville's acting is sublime. Her face conveys a thousand emotions.

Was driven to distraction by awful Jason and Kelly though. There is no way I could tolerate either of them.

And the snog between Derek and Pauline was so repulsive! I couldn't watch.

Awrite · 21/05/2019 23:07

The whole series was just perfect.

I think Derek puts up with Pauline's nastiness because his own mother was nasty. There was a story mid series about his parents being cruel, wasn't there? He's craving his mother's love.

Michael - ahhh. All those looks, the 'melt me like butter' speech, the utter, utter kindness towards Kelly and Maureen and Reg.

It was hilarious in parts and very keenly observed. Bravo.

Yy to a Christmas special. It had better be an hour long.

The80sweregreat · 22/05/2019 09:20

Derek also has a dark past as a teen.

We may well remember the ' melt me like butter' plea, but in series two , Cathy also told Micheal what he means to her. That was an impassioned speech too. She was so nice to him! It was so difficult for them to be able to talk properly to each other without someone in the way.

grupple · 22/05/2019 12:13

I loved Kelly planning to get a puppy, because it would stop her from getting bored while she waited for the baby to wake up. Brilliant.

SinkTerranium · 22/05/2019 13:06

Loved this series and weeped all the way through!

My favourite scene was when Reg comes in and says ‘they brush their teeth twice a day’ and Maureen mutters ‘fucking do-gooders’ while Reg goes on about what must they be eating Grin

The80sweregreat · 22/05/2019 18:20

Lets have a bet on how much that food cost Michael for 8 people in the burger bar! They all had starters (and cheeseboard ! ) and ' lettuce in their burgers! I bet he didn't get much change out of 200 quid. Kelly couldn't drink alcohol , but I bet she went for the £5 milkshake ( in a jam jar with a paper straw)

Kinraddie · 23/05/2019 00:58

Absolutely loved it; every character is perfectly scripted and acted. Remind me - when Pauline was nice to the young girl in series 1 (2?), who was the girl?

EleanorReally · 23/05/2019 07:17

Derek's daughter, Danielle

ncforareason1 · 23/05/2019 11:20

Talking of a Danielle, it’s Danielle Denby-Ashe who plays the owner of the house! She looks amazing as a brunette I thought. Gorgeous woman!

The80sweregreat · 23/05/2019 14:52

i had to look up Danielle denby-ashe, but i remember her from my family
sit com that was on in the 1990s. i didnt reconise her at all in this part.
She was a character very similar to Kelly.

Derek's daughter is Danielle ( the one with the knitting) and Reg mentioned that he had 3 children or something.

BrigitsBigKnickers · 23/05/2019 21:02

This series is exquisite. Binge watched the whole series. Beautifully written, acted and directed. I love the long pauses- they seem to say so much.

My favourite scene was where Jason finally cried over his dad.

Loved the ending- bereft it's over.

Reallybadidea · 24/05/2019 19:26

I think there must be something wrong with me, because series 3 just didn't do it for me (with some notable exceptions "I'll get you up those stairs"). Maybe I need to rewatch it, but I didn't feel that it added much to series 2, which had me in absolute pieces in the last episode of series 2 ("I'm just Michael, people seem to warm to me, but they don't really notice me" "I wish I could go to bed and not think about you... I adore you") I think that was one of the most amazing things I've watched. Series 2, not so much.

I'm a bit disappointed, sorry...

PirateWeasel · 24/05/2019 19:42

I just wanted to throw something at Jason throughout this series. He was an absolute tosser practically to the end. On the flip side, I'd always found Kelly and Pauline really annoying but I'd really warmed to them by the last episode.

Lovely Cathy and Michael though... Still picking up after everybody even on holiday, and Michael being so kind rescuing the fork from the microwave for Jason even though he was being such a prick.

Really hoping there will be a Christmas special!

EdWinchester · 24/05/2019 19:52

I was just discussing this with my husband.

Cathy is so relentlessly nice and insipid, she is taken advantage of by most people in her life. Jason is an absolute selfish, insensitive baby. I was so cross with him. In the moving scene where he (reluctantly) cries, Cathy didn't comfort him. Maybe because he was such a sexist arse.

Kelly too is a bloody awful person.

Yes, it was lovely and amusing and well acted, but so annoying and unikely too.

The80sweregreat · 24/05/2019 19:58

No Cathy just let him cry didn't she! No cuddle or hug.
I found that odd considering how she tip toed around him all the other times!

Reallybadidea · 24/05/2019 20:04

Now, I don't think that Cathy is insipid, she is just incredibly patient and understands people far more than they understand themselves. I think she sees their behaviour, but chooses not to be bothered by it herself, because she knows it's about them and not her. That bit where she so gently, but firmly, showed Kelly's mum how her behaviour was affecting her daughter was just amazing.

I never knew "OK" could mean so many different things!

winewolfhowls · 24/05/2019 22:12

I cried buckets throughout all of these episodes, so understated but so real.
I must say though I did feel a bit sick when Derek was asking about the kissing and offered to lick Pauline's teeth!

diddl · 25/05/2019 09:05

The Derek & Pauline relationship is awful, isn't it?

I almost felt sorry for her thinking that she can't do any better than Derek.

I found him quite awful this series.

Jason just horrible.
