I fell asleep 10 minutes in and woke up at 2 in the morning. Luckily with pjs on. Will have to try again tonight.

I’m hoping that someone with a higher emotional intelligence can explain two points from this show (besides the tickbox casting )

First, the Disabled Lady who went to bed with captain nerd and discovered a ‘device’ in the bedside table. Now if the roles were revered and some guy discovered a Rabbit or a
Hitachi Wand then wouldn’t the response have been ‘hey, hey hey, what do you want me to do with this bad boy’ (but with less eyebrow action.) But instead the DL suddenly came over all Sweet Sixteen And Never Been Kissed and left in a huff, but only after humiliating the guy by inventing the Sex Bot. Why? This just didn’t make sense.

Second. The scene when Teenage Girl declared she wanted to be trans-human, something impossible at that stage of technology and probably never possible in the life of anyone on screen. So saying ‘I want to be TH’ is the equivalent of saying ‘I want to be a dinosaur’ but instead of replying ‘that’s nice dear, more tea’ the parents put their foot down with a strong hand and utterly forbid them from doing something that is impossible. I get it that TG (or her children) will become TH, but this scene just seemed shoehorned in.

Third, (I know I said two items but I’m on a roll here) Why would president Trump nuke anywhere! He’s been elected twice, survived god knows how many legal actions, so why should he end by wanting some nuclear fireworks. The only point here seems to be Trump is an idiot, as if we needed telling.

Janus · 15/05/2019 14:15

I think because the robot was actually for his daughter and was loved by daughter so made it a bit weird to stick your dick in that??!!
Trump is an egotistical nightmare and I honestly could see him doing that to be the first person to hit the button and go down in history.
Found it totally terrifying and also can see how we could get there! I used to have dreams about nuclear war (also born in the 70s) and that 4 minute warning literally made me go cold!

Shitsandgigglez · 15/05/2019 15:28

Enjoyed it..I think. Love Emma T!

I have a question about it. A very high brow one;

Can gay men have sex facing each other?

Susiesoap7 · 15/05/2019 15:29

You are taking it too seriously 😒

CaptainMyCaptain · 15/05/2019 16:11

I don't think she invented the sex robot - that device was designed to fit it. She just thought it was a bit weird using a robot, apparently for his daughter, for sex.

Can gay men have sex facing each other?
I did wonder but I assume Russel T. Davis knows more about gay men's sex than I do.

Optimist1 · 15/05/2019 17:08

If you've ever heard Steven Fry talking about gay men's sex you'll know that penetration isn't a necessary part of it. From what I've heard subsequently, this isn't just a niche opinion.

Shitsandgigglez · 15/05/2019 17:44

@Optimist1 ahh fair point. It kind of looked like penetration was...er happening. I have taken more away from the episode than that though I promise Grin

CoolCarrie · 15/05/2019 17:46

Watch Queer As Folk tv series, the UK version. Shitsandgigglez, that will answer your question.

Bobbindobbin · 15/05/2019 19:46

I was gripped, thinking of watching it again.

AllGoodDogs · 15/05/2019 21:37

Thanks for the post, just watched it on catch up and loved it!!

Q... Is that how gay men do it??! I always assumed it was doggy style rather than missionary. Surely the man underneath gets his junk squished?

AllGoodDogs · 15/05/2019 21:39

Apologies for my duplicate Q.. Should have RTFT! Glad I'm not the only one who didn't know 😂

bopbophop · 15/05/2019 21:59

Yes they can, as pp said I learned this on Queer as Folk back in the day!

QueenOfTheAndals · 15/05/2019 22:00

Good Lord, the actor playing Viktor was Cleopatra's young son in the TV series Rome! I feel rather old now...

ColdNeverBotheredMeAnyway · 15/05/2019 23:18

Ooh I loved the first episode - been thinking about it all day. The way the news headlines were that day's actual news really spooked me! And it was all so realistic and believable... apart from the stupid emoji trans-human story line.. that was a bit daft.

Also... the guy going off to find his gay lover at the end.... the world is about to turn to shit. Yes I get that you want to grab life and do the things you want to do. But would you really leave the people you love, and your lovely husband who might be a bit dull but he's not that bad! It would have been more believable if he was in an unhappy or abusive marriage then ditched him to run off to his lover.

EnidButton · 16/05/2019 00:56

I think he wanted to be with the person he loved the most if it was the end. Plus he knew he'd be on his own without him there and if you really loved someone you wouldn't want that. Well, in a massive crowd but not with family or anyone who loved him. Very mean to his actual husband though!

Re the questions about the sex scene, just shows how few sex scenes between gay men are shown on tv. Straight sex is almost guaranteed in an after 9pm drama but I can't remember seeing a scene where the characters are gay (or bi) and it doesn't cut away after a snog. I think most sex scenes in dramas and films are unnecessary but still, that was a positive thing.

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 16/05/2019 01:08

Another Queer as folk fan here - yes, learnt that gay men could do it in the missionary position in 1999 - iirc Aidan Gillan was on his knees and Charlie Hunnan had his ankles practically round his neck. Hazel was the best character though. At the time I could see why Stuart was attractive but looking back, with Nathan only being 15 (albeit initially lying about his age and consenting enthusiastically) it was a bit seedy. The anal sex scene in Special on Netflix was also missionary but was really beautifully done albeit with a tart-with-a-heart trope.
I'm sure I saw a drama recently where a Mum commented she was happy her gay son could be in a position where he could have eye contact a) eww -inappropriate Mum and b) eye contact is overrated Wink Grin

Back to this - janus has it right - it was the connect between Keith being his daughter's/being a family member but being used as a sexbot for hand and blowjobs that made it seedy as.

The transhuman thing was interesting for the twist although I had expected her to say she was a trans-animal at first (like the woman who had multiple surgeries to look like a cat) but the point was that liberal tolerant mum lost it entirely when she realized her daughter was having her mind filled with crap...I assume because she was concerned about her DD taking that idea forward = suicidal ideation. As scary as if she'd said she was transabled and wanted to cut all her limbs off (not going down the cutting healthy breast tissue anti trans argument here - did think it was interesting RTD specifically used the word transsexual though).
The emoji glasses I could totally imagine being a thing given I had coffee recently with a Mum who spent the whole time showing me pics of her DD and her donning such bollocks on snapchat. I am too old for this life sometimes.

Russell Tovey was no longer happy in his marriage, that was the point - the flat earther thing was the final nail in the coffin. Did you think him and the Ukrainian guy were already lovers: I got the impression they weren't as he had not acted on his impulses yet and when the siren went he realised that he wanted to be with him/didn't want to waste what time they had left/regretting his life choices.

DD watched it this afternoon and compared it with Black Mirror. We both agreed we wouldn't put anything past Trump. We also wondered why in the trailer for next week Jessica Hynes doesn't look ravaged by radiation sickness yet if she was only 26 miles from the epicentre. Were wondering about repercussions for Lin. DD agreed I would have also made a Brew and discussed how Great Gran would have lived through WW2 (would have been 10 when war broke out), blitz spirit etc If we had access we'd have binge watched the lot but I told her she has to watch it over 6 weeks like 'the good old days': I actually said that, that's some scary shit right there!

squidgimon · 16/05/2019 07:43

Also surely there's a world of difference between using a vibrator and using your imagination to get off to actually shagging a robot?

notforonesecond · 16/05/2019 09:45

Really enjoyed this, gripping like others have said.

Amazed so many people didn’t know you can do anal face to face though!

LindsayDentonsCat · 16/05/2019 19:09

Those of you perplexed by how gay men have penetrative sex face-to-face, if you really can't get your head round it, watch Episode 3 of the fantastic series Special on Netflix. In fact, watch the whole series, it's great at moving away from the usual representations of gay men on TV.

LindsayDentonsCat · 16/05/2019 19:11

Sorry cross posted with rage

2rebecca · 16/05/2019 22:30

Watching it at the moment. Enjoying it but it is a bit right on and leftie cliche packed. Russell Tovie's character irritatingly smug. Don't think I'll be too upset if most of them die in a nuclear holocaust

TheFirstOHN · 16/05/2019 23:05

I thought it was really well done.

Most of the future technology ideas have been done before, such as the family man using the household robot for sexual release (Humans) and the idea of uploading consciousness to a server (many, including San Junipero from Black Mirror) but I enjoyed it as a whole.

Adding very recent radio news was a nice touch, to ground us in the 'now'. The family dynamics humanised it and drew us into the characters' lives. As soon as we relaxed our vigilance and allowed ourselves to feel invested, we were hit with the news, seeing it unfold from the point of view of ordinary people (rather than politicians or military leaders).

This has reminded me of how much I miss RTD's writing in Doctor Who.

Some of it made me think RTD misses writing for Doctor Who. Made me remember how much I really missed Murray Gold's music in DW too.

I did hear a couple of years ago that if you knew you were soon to die then your brain can be uploaded ConfusedShock
