Starts tonight 9pm
Family drama that flashes forward into the future.

I think your brain living forever sounds like a nightmare. You would cease to have ownership of it once you aren't physically there and it could be experimented on and tortured.

NigesBlueBadge · 18/05/2019 10:12

Finally watched this last night. AS a PP has said, I had to find something to laugh at right after it, I couldn't face bed straight after that. Took me straight back to the 80s and that fear of hearing the siren.

squidgimon · 18/05/2019 10:35

I thought it was a family comedy drama and had no idea the episode was going to end like that. Nuclear war is one of those "prefer not to think about" topics for me so not sure if I can watch any more!

SimonJT · 18/05/2019 17:25

@Shitsandgigglez

That genuinely made me laugh! Think about it logistically, a womans is only an inch or so away from her vagina, a mans is in exactly the same place (minus the vagina!). Being an inch or so further south makes very little difference.

Russell Tovey is also gay, so please don’t worry, he knows what he’s doing 😂

samsamsamsamsamsam · 18/05/2019 23:04

I've just watched it and have had to calm down!

The ending is something else!

longwayoff · 19/05/2019 07:36

I found this interesting but profoundly depressing and scarily prescient. Don't think I can face the next episode what with Euro election results on top. Please watch it for me!

EnidButton · 19/05/2019 23:10

Is the ending really that bad? Do those of you who found it frightening remember all the Cold War stuff etc. I have watched it and it was quite dramatic but I didn't have the same reaction a lot of people have had. A friend asked me if it was going to be disturbing and I said it was a bit weird but totally fine. Wondering if my perspective is different (born in 80's) and they might find it scary after all.

EnidButton · 19/05/2019 23:12

^ not just on here, I was thinking of some social media posts I've seen. Bout not being able to sleep after watching it etc

longwayoff · 20/05/2019 07:05

I wasn't so much scared, as depressed. If the current global political situation was not as it is, and the programme was simply post apocalyptic fantasy, then it wouldn't have been so unnerving.

EnidButton · 20/05/2019 15:16

Having it be Trump who did it definitely added to that. If they'd had Emma T's character be the one who'd got into power and caused a war a few years later I don't think it would've had the same emotional impact.

Hoping my friend will be ok with it. I'll maybe warn them not to watch last thing at night.

Clawdy · 20/05/2019 22:19

I was gripped by it from start to finish, but wonder how it will stretch to six episodes.

alittleprivacy · 21/05/2019 13:36

I'd nearly forgotten how great a writer Davies is. I absolutely loved QaF when it originally aired and while his Doctor Who, and the spin-offs he created, were occasionally more miss than hit, Torchwood: Children of Earth is genuinely one of the best science fiction stories ever televised. This has the early potential to capitalise on the best strengths of both those series with great human drama and an intriguingly cynical view of modern day politics if brought to the absolute extreme.

I agree with those who recognise that the premise is a bit silly. Trump isn't going to just have fun with the nukes in his last 4 days of office. He's a moron but he isn't that big a moron and if he was, he'd be offed before he got the chance. But this is speculative fiction, an extreme 'what if' story and I do think (hope) that it's ultimate message is one to tell us to calm the fuck down with the constant, utterly divisive extreme side taking that dominates the current political and social discourse.

MoobaaMoobaa · 21/05/2019 22:44

surprised to be reviving this thread.

I love it! terrifying and gripping. so much is close to home. DH can't decide if he likes it or not.

Clawdy · 21/05/2019 22:50

Tonight's was very good, never quite sure what was going to happen next. Love watching the scenes with the grandma's big house - it's five minutes walk from where I live, and I always wondered what it was like inside!

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 21/05/2019 22:56

I was in and out the room tonight - what did Russell Tovey's ex do that put Victor in jeopardy? Saw him taking photos - was he reported for working under the table?

FamilyOfAliens · 21/05/2019 23:01

Yes, during the scene in the car when Russell T gave his ex his watch back, he mentioned that Viktor was having to work cash in hand in a garage. Me and DH both guessed the ex would grass Viktor up.

Janus · 21/05/2019 23:20

Still loved it! Was trying to explain the banks’ collapse to teenage daughter, explain how it could happen again as last time the government bailed them out.
So interesting.

FreshAprilStart · 21/05/2019 23:25

I find this programme so so scary as it feels all too possible.

We're doomed

Optimist1 · 21/05/2019 23:57

Amidst all the horror of the banks closing their doors (and the situation that Steven and Celeste found themselves in), I had to chuckle when the officious policeman pushed to the doors of the second bank demanding access to his money.

Really exciting stuff - as PPs have remarked, so close to our zeitgeist to make it believable.

LoafofSellotape · 22/05/2019 00:00

It's fab,I am hooked but hate having to wait a week for the next episode!

EnidButton · 22/05/2019 02:56

Don't think it's for me. Found it quite boring and a bit preachy. I do understand what he's saying and I can see it happening too but there's too much of the zeitgeist stuff and not enough of anything else. It falls just short of being entertaining enough to keep watching for me personally. Plus Emma T's generic Northern accent is getting on my nips.

ControversialFerret · 22/05/2019 07:17

I love it. I think it's clever and the about-turn of Rosie and Edith towards supporting Viv Rook stops it from being too lefty and preachy. Even then, it's more subtle than that. Emma Thompson's character is designed to show the boiling a frog nature of extremism. The scene at the by-election with the 'blink' device was really compelling.

longwayoff · 22/05/2019 07:38

Ohhh. Enid, see how you feel when Thursday's election results are announced.. .

QueenOfTheAndals · 22/05/2019 07:45

Am I the only one finding Rosie and the transhuman daughter really annoying?

Viv is clearly going to wind up PM by series end and shit will well and truly have hit fan by then.

Dulra · 22/05/2019 08:04

Wasn't as keen an episide two found it a bit boring I'm also struggling to warm to the characters but maybe that's the point. Found it slightly unbelievable when the brother was telling them how much money he lost the sisters were so unsympathetic and telling him it's all his fault, can't imagine anyone being so tone deaf in that situation Hmm
Did like the polar opposite reactions to viv winning the by election the brother being absolutely distraught while his sister is at the count cheering her on. I think those massively opposing views do exist in families ever since brexit. (Apologies can't remember any of the character names which isn't a good sign).
The bank collapsing was scary think we should all go back to hiding money under the mattress Grin
