Russell T Davies is from Manchester isn't he

I thought he was Welsh?

SushiGo · 13/06/2019 18:28

I thought he was Welsh?

Yes apparently! Sorry, I'm an idiot. He lived/s there though.

I've been googling and just realised his husband died last year as well, very sad.

BIWI · 13/06/2019 18:37

No he's not Welsh. He is an Essex boy!

BIWI · 13/06/2019 18:39

Whoops - sorry - realise you weren't talking about Russell Tovey Blush

northernstars · 13/06/2019 21:02

@Dulra I'm English and moved to Ireland 15 years and my ignorance of Irish history was absolutely shocking. A steep learning curve for sure. We didn't learn about the Boer War or anything where we (often) were on the wrong side of history.

BertieBotts · 13/06/2019 21:08

I don't understand why Edith and Bethany aren't all over the dark web. I bet there would have been all kinds of info on there.

I'm 30 and did not learn about the Boer war at school. I feel very ignorant now. I couldn't have told you anything about it - when I googled it as a result of this discussion it was much earlier than I was assuming given the context on the programme.

Been reflecting on this... I wish RTD had given Viktor some focus to his life other than Daniel; some ambition that he wanted to achieve for himself. Most of the time, understandably, it has focused on his situation, but on the odd occasion where he could have been given a line about something else, it's been about something he read on the internet (North Pole melting; 3D printed village). If he does get out of the Erstwhile - and there was a shot in the trailer of him alongside Edith so presumably he does- we've got no sense of what his life would be. I hope he gets to hang out with Muriel.

growlingbear · 13/06/2019 22:49

Plop I was thinking the same. Viktor is a bit 'token ethnic' - no personality just a pretty face n a difficult situation. All the refugees I've met irl are tremendously strong characters with real drive to establish a career and a life here. Viktor seems very vague and drifty, more like a gap year kid.

PloptheBarnOwl · 13/06/2019 23:29

growlingbear that's my experience too. I have a friend who now has leave to remain, but he spent years in legal limbo, and had several spells in Brook House (the real-life "Three Bridges detention centre"). Over the years, we've talked about his family, his career, his mental health - his life didn't just begin and end with his refugee status.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 14/06/2019 09:04

I guess Viktor is there less in his own right and more to show the light/shade of the Lyons family's behaviour?

RuffleCrow · 14/06/2019 09:28

I agree. Although frankly i could look at Viktor all day! Blush

He's not typical of the refugees I've met either, who if anything have an 'excess of personality' because of what they've lived through.

PloptheBarnOwl · 14/06/2019 13:43

May I leave this here...

Oh no Plop I still see him as the little boy in 'Mr Bean's Holiday' 🤭

Mominatrix · 14/06/2019 16:34

DS who is 15 definitely knows about the Boer War and told me the fact about the British coming up with the concept of concentration camps a couple weeks ago when we were watching a documentary on WWII, so I think some schools do it (he goes to a private one and they do go off piste from the national curriculum).

growlingbear · 14/06/2019 18:39

Yes you may Plop Thank you. Grin

Janus · 14/06/2019 19:07

He has such a beautiful face Plop.

RuffleCrow · 14/06/2019 19:28

Thanks plop.Grin

I was a bit confused when a small, goofy looking boy cropped up on the cast list for Years and Years fox Confused think it might be time for him to update his ImDB profile !

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 15/06/2019 08:28

The actor who plays Viktor would go down very well in a period drama. Wink

GeorgeTheBleeder · 15/06/2019 08:34

Have skipped whatever’s been said since Tuesday. Am watching ep 5 now. Seven minutes in and - I’m not sure I’ve cried this much as an adult, ever.

NotTheQueensBirthday · 15/06/2019 11:13

Love this series. Definitely think Bethany will be tracked and probably end up in a concentration camp. Edith will perhaps die trying to rescue Viktor/expose the camps.

AnyFucker · 15/06/2019 12:01

.

bilbodog · 15/06/2019 12:41

Anyone else think viktor looks just like jack savoretti?

QueenOfTheAndals · 15/06/2019 13:01

Yes a little bit. I hadn't heard of Jack so had to google and helloooo!

Bobbindobbin · 15/06/2019 16:20

I also think Bethany will end up being killed in the concentration camp, and the ending will be similar to the boy in the striped pajamas. Karma for Stephen but tragic.
