Starts tonight 9pm
Family drama that flashes forward into the future.

OP posts:

Also Viktor has a very different accent to the rest of the family, I don’t know how they would get around that.

longtompot · 06/06/2019 16:02

I wondered why Daniel didn't go to the border control and say his pasport had been stolen (which it had, he just didn't need to tell them how) and he could have gone across that way and Viktor could have gone across on the boat.
I was left feeling so sad at the end of that episode. I've been left feeling shocked, or omg what is going to happen now before. Someone upthread said about the music being annoying, I think it lends to the feeling of being out of control of what is happening. It ramps up the dramatics.
(Not)looking forward to next weeks.

Catslovepies · 06/06/2019 16:32

Flowersfor Janus, thank you!!!

Cloudtree · 06/06/2019 18:04

There are obviously other things they could have done. Daniel could have gone back to the UK and used his £6k to hire a boat to take across the channel for example. But I thought the fact that they wanted to stay together no matter what really emphasised the desperation they felt. I still keep thinking about it and I watched it when it was showing.

BedraggledBlitz · 06/06/2019 19:21

Its definitely stayed with me. I ended up crying in car on way home from work, just thinking about the mothers who have to take their babies on these terrifying journeys. All for something I wake up to every day. Will definitely donate, thanks for the link.

GeorgeTheBleeder · 06/06/2019 20:02

My god - that was ... immense.

They should give RTD all the television. He just gets better and better.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 06/06/2019 20:50

Im sat here whimpering

Dh just said...well it wouldn’t be a drama if someone hadnt died

And ive just told him I wouldn’t have minded any of the adult characters dying...just not daniel

bakingcupcakes · 06/06/2019 22:02

I've just watched the end of that episode in horror. I actually wanted to turn it off when it got to the English beach but couldn't. It's just so sad. I've loved this series since it started but no one I know in RL is watching it.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 06/06/2019 22:18

I wanted to turn it off when they got on the sodding boat

I knew someone in the navy who spent their time in oceans where people are trying to get to safety on ramshackle boats

They said that the people who own the boats put people on boats that are definitely going to sink...on purpose!

Pebble21uk · 06/06/2019 22:22

Those awful scenes reminded me very much of the BBC2 documentary 'Exodus' which was on a few years ago and followed several individuals and families escaping Syria. I just had a look to see if it was still available, but doesn't seem to be so. The boat scenes were almost identical.

Brilliant series - writing and acting both spot on. Does anyone know which year it is now? Is it still 2026?

TheFirstOHN · 07/06/2019 06:43

I think episode 4 was set in 2027.

GeorgeTheBleeder · 07/06/2019 06:57

I watched ep 4 yesterday and it’s still traumatising me.

Perhaps partly because Russell Tovey is such an astonishing actor. And made Daniel so appealing. Over the course of the series I had completely forgotten that he wasn’t real. Suspension of disbelief was much greater with him than with any of the other characters - this morning I’m thinking of all the people who won’t get to grow old with him.

D’you think the Lyons will embrace Viktor and take him to live with them? I’m worrying about him ...

MauisHouseOnMaui · 07/06/2019 07:40

I think Gran will take Viktor in. Rosie will resent him for that and blame him for Daniel's death, she's already been making snide comments about Daniel sending him money and rolling her eyes whenever he's mentioned. He'll be safe until Gran dies and then the others will cut him loose.

Asta19 · 07/06/2019 09:09

I agree with Mauis. I think it’s more realistic that at least one of them would blame him for Daniel’s death and the most likely is Rosie. But in the short term I think they will take him in.

FlutterShite · 07/06/2019 09:49

Yes, Maui and Asta, I think you're right. Gran told Viktor a couple of episodes earlier that he would always be welcome there - can't remember if she actually said he'd always have a home there but that's the sentiment I remember.

ColouringPencils · 07/06/2019 09:54

Will nobody blame Edith for setting up the plan?

Medievalist · 07/06/2019 10:03

The person to blame, as I said previously, is Daniel's ex who shopped Viktor.

But yes, I can see Rosie blaming Viktor.

SimonJT · 07/06/2019 10:08

Yes Ralph shouldn’t have reported Viktor, however, if Viktor hadn’t broken the conditions of his asylum application by working he may not have been deported.

GeorgeTheBleeder · 07/06/2019 10:13

Oh yes! She told Viktor he would be welcome there for the rest of his life ...

Will be a shame if Gran (what is her name?) has to fall out with Rosie. (Whose face is beginning to fascinate me almost as much as Vicky McClure’s. Such animation! Such cheekbones!)

Janus · 07/06/2019 10:13

I too think Gran will take him in. I thought they were all driving to Daniel’s to go and support Viktor. I hope so.

Medievalist · 07/06/2019 10:27

Yes Ralph shouldn’t have reported Viktor, however, if Viktor hadn’t broken the conditions of his asylum application by working he may not have been deported.

Can't blame Viktor for wanting to earn a few quid to feed and clothe himself. But I can blame Ralph for spitefully notifying the authorities and triggering disastrous consequences.

GeorgeTheBleeder · 07/06/2019 10:37

It occurs to me (bit late, I admit) that there is no happy ending for these characters - with the political lurching towards cataclysm. Domestic and societal life are being shown as increasingly unsustainable - locally and globally. Viktor can’t spend the rest of his life in hiding. The world can’t go on with Roe v Wade gone. Daniel gone. Edith dying ...

Will it be Viv who pushes the button?

Asta19 · 07/06/2019 10:42

Of course ultimately no one is to blame. Daniel made his own choices. But it is the nature of grief to look to blame someone I think.

CanILeavenowplease · 07/06/2019 10:45

Meant to ask, Edith's eye when she was talking to the crisp boyfriend was oddly shaped and red....I am assuming it's just a symptom of the radiation but did it mean anything else?

GeorgeTheBleeder · 07/06/2019 10:51

As to who was to blame - it was horribly, hilariously cunning for RTD to make it an extreme left wing party that scuppered Viktor’s hope of a safe haven in Spain.

And then the fabulous, fabulous joke with Stephen compulsively turning repeatedly to the left. GrinGrinGrin

Didn’t realise how much I’d missed RTD on top form ...
