Jodie Comer is a scouser...seen some interviews with her and so didnt expect that accent
She is amazing- fantastic actress,
I loved this but the ending was kind of inevitably set up for a sequel

QueenOfTheAndals · 28/09/2018 16:26

I had no idea she was Scouse! I've only ever seen her in other things where she had a fairly neutral or RP accent.

0hCrepe · 28/09/2018 17:56

The only reason I’ve now forgiven the ending is because there will be a sequel!

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 29/09/2018 12:29

Just watched episodes and and two and absolutely I loved it great leading actresses and Kim Bodnia 😍

Gritty, glamorous, stylish and funny had many male led similar shows/films great to see a women leading this genre

LilaGrace · 29/09/2018 16:21

I've watched the whole series. It was bloody brilliant! I thought Jodie Comer was outstanding. Was it just me, or was anyone else weirdly attracted to Villanelles character....😬

LarryFreakinStylinson · 29/09/2018 16:24

Loved Villanelle as a character. Jodie Comer is fantastic. Have always had a soft spot for Sandra Oh as Cristina was always my favourite in Greys over whiny Meredith.

LadyDuplo · 29/09/2018 16:27

Finished watching it last night. Amazing! Really enjoyed it. Jodie Comer was mesmerising. Award winning performance. Started watching episode 1 again as soon as the series finished Blush

CoolCarrie · 29/09/2018 22:15

Poor Bill, he was a good guy.
The author has written three books in the series.

SymphonyofShadows · 11/10/2018 06:41

I'm tempted to read the books as I enjoyed the series so much.

Thymeout · 11/10/2018 10:51

I thought it was brilliant. Watched it twice now and 2nd time round was even better. I rewind to watch Viillanelle's 'Oops' over her driving mishap and 'Dealt with' re Sebastien. (Trying to be vague.)

Sorry TQ. It was a huge relief to me when the last episode didn't turn into a steamy sex scene. 'That's rude'. Grin

Re the 2nd series, my son works in Bloomsbury. (The meeting room in the first episode with the croissant was shot in Senate House.) Looked out of his office window yesterday and there was Villanelle walking down the street with ???? Massive spoiler. He's not finished the series yet so couldn't tell him why I was so shocked.

Amazon Kindle have the first Luke Jennings book for £3.99. I started reading, but I think it would spoil it to go on. I don't think anything could top Phoebe Waller-Bridge's script and the mesmeric acting of Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer. Such expressive faces. Have even caught myself trying out the latter's eyebrow tricks in the mirror. Blush

Wherearemymarbles · 12/10/2018 16:20

watchable but so many vast plot holes that in reality it was complete crap.

longwayoff · 13/10/2018 22:11

I'm with you marbles, found it arch and incomplete. Everyone else I know loved it though.

Onecutefox · 14/10/2018 00:49

A bit unrealistic, a bit of a crap. Well, it's good in a way you want to watch the next episode but she leaves so many trails you would think she works with Petrov and Boshirov. Her knowledge of languages is crap. She couldn't even talk in Russian whereas she could talk in other languages fluently so fluently that an Italian mafioso didn't find her accent suspicious because she didn't have it. There are some flows in this film but as an entertainment it's good.

Thymeout · 14/10/2018 10:17

It's not meant to be realistic. It's like Mick Herron's spy series or James Bond. The Twelve is like Smersh, a group of supranational villains. They're both a long way from Le Carre, who's writing from personal experience.

Villanelle can speak Russian - it's her first language. But she refuses to, perhaps because of her mother? Her Sloaney English accent in the Natalie and Fanny episode is spot-on. Warm fruitcake - a dead give-away that their hostess isn't what she seems. No Englishwoman would freeze fruitcake.

But there's no arguing about taste, really. Luckily, I like both Le Carre and Mick Herron. They're both v good of their kind.

juneau · 14/10/2018 12:35

I thought it was really fun and I loved the black humour. Yes, there are holes, but it was so refreshing to watch something that kind of made fun of itself and the genre. A great cast too. The ending though - I was Shock. I just wasn't expecting that.

Onecutefox · 14/10/2018 22:08

Villanelle can speak Russian - it's her first language. But she refuses to, perhaps because of her mother?

She is refusing tp speak Russian because the film makers couldn't find a double who could speak it properly. She talked English even in prison and the guards could speak English, the doctor and lots of other folks. It doesn't sound believable. I would call it a quick and lazy job. Well I believe there are many people who speak English in Russia but not like they show in the film. Don't think the prison guards are going to be that unpatriotic Grin

Thymeout · 15/10/2018 10:56

Oh come on! Jodie Comer is brilliant at accents. You'd never know she is a Liverpudlian. I'm sure she could cope with a script that needed her to speak Russian with a convincing accent.

The mother thing seems to be an important part of understanding Villanelle's character. It keeps coming up, e.g. with the psychiatrist and the drawing of the faceless woman. She seems to be attracted to women of a certain age with the same length hairstyle. Anna, the American tourist -and Eve.

It's a weakness that she refuses to speak Russian, even when it would be to her advantage to do so. So you wonder why. I don't think it's because JC can't do a Russian accent, because she does all the other accents so well.

Onecutefox · 15/10/2018 19:42

It's not the accent - it's the fact that she speaks English in the Russian prison. Oh, yes, the prison in Moscow is an international prison and they have multilingual staff to cater for multilingual prisoners. Just imagine it's the English person in English prison refusing to speak English instead speaking German or French - very popular languages. You would have to find an interpreter because I doubt the staff would be multilingual.

As for her accent, my Russian friends say you could hear she is foreign and they couldn't understand why they couldn't use a double voice speaking Russian.
They try to portray a very talented young woman speaking different languages up to perfection but then she fails to speak properly in its own mother tongue. I hope you see what I mean. Otherwise, she is a brilliant actress and I have enjoyed her acting very much.

Thymeout · 15/10/2018 22:22

But that just shows how strong her aversion to speaking her own language is. She still won't speak it even when it would help her in prison to be understood. Konstantin keeps on at her about it. When she met the psychiatrist and she really wanted him to pass her as fit, her refusal to speak Russian obviously counted against her but she still wouldn't.

In the general scheme of things, it doesn't matter whether Russians can tell she's foreign. It's aimed at an English-speaking audience. Might not be able to be shown in Russia anyway. They banned The Death of Stalin.

I think we're arguing at cross-purposes. I'm glad you've enjoyed her acting.

Onecutefox · 15/10/2018 23:25

Thymeout, the plot has been created so Jodie wouldn't speak much Russian because of obvious reasons (she cannot speak it without an accent considering its her mother tounge) and so are the excuses which are pretty damn but it's not her fault but the director's.
Well, let's see what happens in the new series. I wonder if that granny somehow helped her.

Ladybirdbookworm · 23/10/2018 02:05

I've loved it but I'm totally confused as to who is good and who is bad !
Also when Constantin started calling her Villanelle I thought that was odd - Villanelle was just a nickname given to her by Eve. It was the name of the bottle of perfume she sent her. He couldn't have known that ??
