K-Drama recommendations

A K-drama thread was suggested on the Netflix subtitled gems thread so we can discuss in more depth without swamping the other thread. There are a lot of Korean films & boxsets on Netflix and I’m discovering the quality is variable, so I thought this would be a goid place to swap recommendations (and ‘avoids’). So far, I have hugely enjoyed:

  • Something in the Rain
  • Mr Sunshine (new episodes still dropping weekly)
  • Live

Would also love to hear how closely these dramas represent real life in Korea from anyone who has lived there. Its fascinating learning about another culture.

Strong girl bong soon was great!!!

boatyardblues · 17/10/2018 22:00

Glad you enjoyed it Mrs. It’s definitely quirky, but funny too. I especially loved the bit at the end where Mr CEO is getting in a flap at home Wink and phones her & she snaps “why are you ringing me at work?” whilst supporting a toppling cement silo with her other hand. Great stuff!

Plum soju is lovely but only 13% compared to 18-20% for the plain stuff. Also purchased some authentic kimchee from Korea in a squidgy pack from the chiller section. It is very good, but rather spicy - DH agreed its teetering on the pleasure/pain boundary.

(Stopped off at the Korean grocer on the way home tonight.)

I am tempted to take some soju with me on my girls' weekend tomorrow.....

bettys · 18/10/2018 22:06

Rofl that the 13% Plum soju isn't quite strong enough.....

Gave Man to Man another go and gave up again, in spite of Hina being in it.

boatyardblues · 19/10/2018 20:29

I finished Man to Man last night. It was well done & the characters were engaging, but not a fave.

Just watched the trailer for Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories, which looks to be a great ‘slice of life’ series with heartwarming stories. Have bookmarked for later.

Have to say, I preferred Hina being kick-ass, Machiavellian Hina to slightly soppy Do-Ha. The actress did not get to show as much range in Man to Man.

Paid an annual sub couple of months back, just put in a paypal dispute to get it back!

bettys · 20/10/2018 00:52

Oh no Seadays, hope you get your money back!

Aha boatyardblues I can recommend Don't Dare to Dream I subscribed to Viki so I could watch it 'cos of the chef from Ghost. In fact I may have to watch it again as he is rather scrummy ...

boatyardblues · 20/10/2018 08:57

It is good. I was very undisciplined last night and watched 3 1/2 episodes. Blush I am stupidly tired today.

OP posts:
bettys · 20/10/2018 09:47

I think I binge watched it in three days! I started the first episode again last night ....

boatyardblues · 20/10/2018 12:14

I only sat down this morning to finish episode 3 before my shower...

Betty! There are 24 hour long episodes!! Shock Did you take annual leave?

bettys · 20/10/2018 12:23

Blush DH & DS were away over a weekend so I could watch in to the wee hours

bettys · 20/10/2018 18:05

Don't Dare to Dream is also called Jealousy Incarnate on Viki. Another good one Netflix has added from Viki is Suspicious Partner which is a rom-com with the lovely Ji Chang Wook from Healer.

OMG, Betty - this series is televisual crack! It’s so hard to stop watching and go do something else instead. I am embarrassed by how much TV I’ve watched this weekend. My housework is not getting done & I have not had enough sleep. Blush

Betty - Can you help with one question? I can’t work out the relationship between Rak Pasta chef and the CEO’s mother. Former lover? Or son/older brother to the CEO?

bettys · 21/10/2018 14:42

Rak pasta chef is brother to CEO so also a chaebol heir

bettys · 21/10/2018 14:44

cherries101 yes I liked Legend of the Blue Sea too even though I’m not a Lee Min Ho fan
