A K-drama thread was suggested on the Netflix subtitled gems thread so we can discuss in more depth without swamping the other thread. There are a lot of Korean films & boxsets on Netflix and I’m discovering the quality is variable, so I thought this would be a goid place to swap recommendations (and ‘avoids’). So far, I have hugely enjoyed:

  • Something in the Rain
  • Mr Sunshine (new episodes still dropping weekly)
  • Live

Would also love to hear how closely these dramas represent real life in Korea from anyone who has lived there. Its fascinating learning about another culture.

There are offers for Apple TV, iPhone and iPad.

I have the app on my phone, and the standard pass which works out at something just under £4 per month. Looks like you can link Viki to the Apple box somehow, will try & check that out over the weekend

Ok, my confession - I keep a K-Drama themed bullet journal and I have a few pages devoted to kdrama tropes and which programmes they appear in. If memory serves, Shopping King Louis had the most

bettys · 16/11/2018 13:40

Although tbh I rarely watch on tv, just when I have a night in on my own. Then it’s kdrama, sheet face mask & Prosecco!

bettys · 16/11/2018 13:44

Heechuloppa 👏👏 I’m liking your style!
So far I just have a list of dramas viewed categorised in 4 groups (favourites, enjoyed, okay & couldn’t get on with)
I am going to have to up my game

bettys · 16/11/2018 13:48

Re: the kdrama bingo card, the piggyback thing is the most mysterious to me, both for drunk girl and injured person scenarios. I know for a fact that there are both taxis and ambulances in Korea because they also feature heavily in kdrama. Why does no one ever use them? I can accept the ambulance substitution if one of our Korean posters tells me they are all privately owned and a trip to A&E in a nee-naw will set you back $600, but why not a taxi instead in all other scenarios?

DR ROMANTIC SEMI- SPOILER FOLLOWS

The post ice sculpture piggyback dash in Dr Romantic was the most surprising, as surely a room full of doctors would have some idea about taking care if there’s a chance of displacing a fracture or exaccerbating head, spinal or internal injuries...

Absolutely but why let medical logic get in the way of a good kdrama trope? It looks incredibly uncomfortable and bad for the back too. I do love how when carrying drunken women the men without fail sling their handbags over their own necks.

Fight For My Way is winning over I Need Romance at the moment. Isn't the FL the same as in Discovery of Love?

boatyardblues · 16/11/2018 19:15

Yes. She was also the female lead in Live.

Will definitely be coming back to I Need Romance but Fight For My Way is sucking me in with its endearing qualities...it's about people who don't have the right connections & background and who may have missed out on their dreams (I'm on ep. 4 though so I'm sure they will have by 16 ;-) )

Bea · 16/11/2018 23:57

I can't find anywhere that is showing "fight my way!" 😭😭😭... The clips on YouTube look really good!!
The piggyback thing.... I think they use it because its just cute isn't it?? Cutsey and childlike! Practicalities and sense is just thrown out the window if you can make your audience go... Awwwww❤️❤️❤️❤️

bettys · 17/11/2018 00:04

Dramabus

Bea · 17/11/2018 18:29

bettys · 17/11/2018 19:12

bettys · 17/11/2018 19:13

Same here. Blush Fell asleep in the cinema with DH and the kids and was startled awake by a very loud scene. No loss as the film was sprawling and impregnable. 🤷‍♂️

When you get a good drama it’s just irresistible.
What was the film?

HeechulOppa · 17/11/2018 21:05

Glad you like it Bettys! The guy who plays his coach is one of my favourite actors - he’s brilliant at playing bumbling adorable guys - he’s also a main secondary character in Korean Odyssey and Secret Garden. Weirdly though, after watching him in those we realised he was the main villain in a Korean thriller film my dh and I love (The Man from Nowhere). When I told my dh it was brilliant to see it dawn on him, he couldn’t believe it. He just kept saying ‘No way! But ... he’s horrible!’

boatyardblues · 17/11/2018 21:34

Latest Fantastic Beasts film. I had no idea what the hell was going on, but I’m fine with that. The nap was consequently guilt free and enhanced my enjoyment of the film.

Heechuloppa it’s now firmly on my Favourites list! I have one episode to go having binged in 2.5 days thank goodness for weekends. Couldn’t get over how different a role it was to the ViceChairman in Secretary Kim

Also love the coach & was trying to place him

bettys · 17/11/2018 21:52

boatyardblues think I’ll wait for it to come out on tv then Grin
