K-Drama recommendations

A K-drama thread was suggested on the Netflix subtitled gems thread so we can discuss in more depth without swamping the other thread. There are a lot of Korean films & boxsets on Netflix and I’m discovering the quality is variable, so I thought this would be a goid place to swap recommendations (and ‘avoids’). So far, I have hugely enjoyed:

  • Something in the Rain
  • Mr Sunshine (new episodes still dropping weekly)
  • Live

Would also love to hear how closely these dramas represent real life in Korea from anyone who has lived there. Its fascinating learning about another culture.

I’m e-learning so much from this thread!
Sadly I realise with my red cheeks, frizzy hair & average university my kdrama fate is more likely to be the white truck of doom than the handsome CEO!

e-learning?? Random phone error

Bea I loved the office scenes as well! I’ve just started Fight For My WAy with Park Seo Joon in a totally different role & am already enjoying it 1 episode in 😊

Same here. I lack the diet commitment of those lovely slim Korean actresses. Wine Cake Gin

bettys.... Where are you watching fight my way?...

Woo! Hoo! I have the Asian credentials!... But the good skin and skinny malinki genes have skipped me by!... However my sister is lovely!!.... I'm not jealous!... No! I'm not!!

Bea · 15/11/2018 19:34

Watching all these kdramas makes me think of my grandma... She used to get all these Chinese soaps sent to her from Hong Kong when VHS became available! Chow yun fat seemed popular!... 😂... I couldn't understand a word!

Scrub me in and pass me the face mask... I'm heading into Dr Romance on netflix! "boatyardblues"... On your recommendation!!😊

It’s been fun (30 min left, off to put kids to bed now). Just try to over look their sloppy infection control - stitching without gloves or handwashing, the ever-present arterial face splatter in surgery... I’m not even medically trained and I’m appalled.

It wins a special prize for most creative plotting with an ice sculpture. Grin

Is anyone here streaming viki through an Apple TV box? If so, how do you find it? Are the navigation menus etc decent?

Omg! You weren't kidding about the copious amounts of blood! On second ep!! It's amazing what a good haircut can do!! 😂😂😂

Bea · 15/11/2018 22:10

The hospital reception!,.... It's the gangster from strong girl bong soon!!😂💪... She did choose the right bloke!! ❤️❤️❤️

I’ve started In Need of Romance 2012. It started with a steamy one-night standalike scene and seems whip smart without too much kook. It’s fairly knowing in terms of relationship dynamics, there’s a bit of sexually inclined banter. I’m inclined to stick with it because the male lead is so good at housework. It’s an under-rated plus in a man, I feel. On those grounds alone, he deserves a chance.

Bea - I really like Ms Oh, the matron. She’s fierce, but in the best possible way.

Proper lolling here. There’s so much sunshine in the “rainy day” scene I’m watching, there’s actually a full rainbow in shot. 😆

Back from a girls’ night out where much Pinot Grigio was consumed in lieu of soju.

Bea I just googled & came up with a site though I generally prefer to watch on Netflix or Viki.

I love the slightly feral other worldly ambience of the hospital in Dr Romance

boatyardblues · 16/11/2018 00:53

Word to the wise: Do not start In Need of Romance 2012 an hour or two before you were planning to go to bed. It’s kdrama crack.

Too late 😱 your description of steamy one night stand & man doing housework prompted me to have a look. Now I have 2 series on the go aaaarg!!

boatyardblues · 16/11/2018 06:48

4.50am? Did you stay up all night?

I love the laid back vibe and general friskiness of In Need of Romance - probably the most enjoyable kdrama I’ve watched in a while. I hope it doesn’t get too silly. I am prepared to overlook the concept of two, separate adjoining properties being divided by a sliding, translucent room partition because of their childhhod friendship & I see how it greatly facilitates the plot Wink, but that’s about it.

boatyardblues we have an Apple box but I didn’t realised you could stream Viki through it, I watch on my laptop & phone. Do you have to linkl it through an app?

boatyardblues · 16/11/2018 13:25

I don’t have it yet, but I’m considering it. There is a Viki app in the App Store.
