'Nick also seems to be a mechanic and gardener as well though - he's a serious grafter, that boy!'

See? Perfect husband material.
Luke seems to me the type who would never put the bins out.

BlessedBeTheFruitLoop · 14/08/2018 18:06

I do think Luke seems like a bit of a wet blanket. The scenes right at the start where Luke was fumbling with the gun VS Nick confidently shoving the clip home on his and holstering it with authority swoon

I do love a man with a confident grip Wink

BIWI · 14/08/2018 18:31

Oh er Grin

MrsAidanTurner · 14/08/2018 19:00

Yes I remember now thank you re the eye warning!!

MrsAidanTurner · 14/08/2018 19:01

There must be more back story to nick..

The Martha's can organise themselves but nick s plan to get June out failed. And he hasn't tried again inspite of his woman and child being treated so badly.

He must have done something to be an eye...

morningtoncrescent62 · 14/08/2018 19:02

Considering he's a (relatively) good guy, I felt murderous towards CLawrence when he was taking Emily to the escape meeting place. She was absolutely beside herself in the car, not knowing what would happen to her, and he farts about playing mind games with music instead of explaining what was happening to her. I watched again last night to try to see who was driving, but I couldn't make it out. Maybe their Martha, in a Guardian's uniform?

placemats · 14/08/2018 19:02

I love a man who doesn't grip, FRED ANYONE?, but who hugs and soothes and knows where the guns are kept.

I do love a woman whose mind is set on getting things done.

blessings to you all

OhHolyJesus · 14/08/2018 19:03

Wouldn't you love to have the actors read these threads to see what we make of the characters...

Mustang27 · 14/08/2018 19:12

I'm in the Nick fan club he is bloody gorgeous. Seriously my heart goes all a flutter when he is in the screen but maybe he is made more attractive because every other man is a cruel pile of shit.

Yeah poor Luke pales in comparison.

BlessedBeTheFruitLoop · 14/08/2018 19:44

I must say if he's an ordinary looking man, I'm obviously frequenting the wrong places Grin

placemats · 14/08/2018 19:49

He looks exactly like my first husband. Height, eyes and hair.

I left my first husband at the tender age of 26.

He brings back great memories, but sadly our brief marriage of five years wasn't going to last.

JustLikeBefore · 14/08/2018 19:50

oh since there is a few swooners on here, look what I went searching for just happened to be recommended on you tube.

Aridane · 14/08/2018 20:10

Nick? - meh

Aridane · 14/08/2018 20:10

June has escaped harsh punishments.. She will loose something if she is caught

She is long overdue the wall!

BlessedBeTheFruitLoop · 14/08/2018 20:40

Awww I just love the bit where she tells him she's pregnant. His reaction is lovely.

BlessedBeTheFruitLoop · 14/08/2018 20:42

I do wonder if I'd be so obsessed with the show if I didn't find Nick so alluring. Frankly I could just watch him all day....those puppy dog eyes Grin

TeenTimesTwo · 14/08/2018 21:28

Was CL not driving himself?

Flaskfan · 14/08/2018 21:36

Tht has kept my brain active all through Spin tonight.

When I thought about the fact that the Gilead girls wouldn't be taught to read and of course, June's daughter in particular, it made me feel like they were actually mutilating the girls; almost cutting out a part of their brain, but maybe that's because I can't imagine life without being able to read. To me, it kind of mirrored Serena's physical mutilation.

Then I thought about the hand maids and wives. How do they know all the wives are infertile, including the young ones? Do the commanders have sex with wife (through the sheet) and the handmaid then end up with potentially 2 children? Have the commanders stopped having normal sex with their wives?

Maybe they need to move away from ratcheting up the grim-ometer each episode and look at exploring every day Gilead. We get it; it's hideous: now show us how it works.

BlessedBeTheFruitLoop · 14/08/2018 21:41

I've just watched the clip again and theres a man driving while CL sits in the passenger seat. You can't see who it is properly but I don't recognise him from the bits you see. Big bloke with a hat....looks very like CL from behind actually!

JynxaSmoochum · 14/08/2018 21:45

Something I've been musing over. When Emily went to CL's and he caught her looking at the book, he said that it was a finger for reading, but was previously a hand, then asked her what she thought.

Was it Serena that relaxed the punishment when Fred was in hospital? Has she inadvertantly saved herself from a more severe punishment.

My other thought was that when Warren had his arm amputated for having extra sex with Janine, his wife was keen to not bend the rules for him. As well as the general misogeny and Fred's contempt for Serena, was there an element of revenge by the commanders in applying the full force of the rules to Serena given Warren's punishment.

QuackPorridgeBacon · 14/08/2018 21:47

I thought commander Lawrence just meant in history. But then that was stealing you lost a hand for? Maybe it was a gilead rule and it was changed to a finger.

BlessedBeTheFruitLoop · 14/08/2018 21:48

From what I understand, they can only have sex for breeding purposes, not for fun. Even the commanders and their wives. Some of the commanders' wives have fallen pregnant naturally. Those that haven't are declared barren (although it's actually the men at fault) and therefore sex would be pointless. That's why Fred accused Serena of bringing lust back into the house "on her back and on her knees", because they'd had that passionate session a while back. I assume the sheet is to ensure that there is no lust to begin with between the new generation of wives and their husbands. The existing ones obviously would have been having lustful relations for years and perhaps found it a bit harder to give up!

One thing I did wonder....when all the wives are stood around chatting it looks like a lot of them have makeup on. I thought it had been banned to avoid the sin of vanity. But was it only banned for handmaids to stop them having any sexual appeal? Or are they all supposed to be bare faced and we're to pretend they don't have mascara and blusher on?! The mother of baby Angela had grey eyeshadow on in the last episode.

Flaskfan · 14/08/2018 21:49

Maybe there were more women trying to read earlier on, so needed more stringent punishment.

Some one asked why a finger for reading and an eye for insolence. Isn't there something about 'if thy right eye offends, then thou must cut it out'? Although that seems to be more about controlling yourself. Ah, hang on, maybe that's why they use it as punishment- women aren't capable of controlling themselves.

Flaskfan · 14/08/2018 21:51

And the wives wear heels. Is that a status thing like once having white skin- it's an outward sign that you don't need to work, but also inhibits how quickly you walk.

JynxaSmoochum · 14/08/2018 21:52

In the book, Serena and Fred were older, more middle-aged so their optimal window of fertility was passing, well, Serena's anyway.

Casting younger has thrown up more opportunity to develop the plot and Serena's longing for a baby but does make it seem odd that the system has given up on her chances. There was the commander with a pregnant wife a few episodes ago.
