So, classic Eastenders starts airing on the UKTV Drama channel from tomorrow! Two episodes from noon, and they’ll also be on UKTV catchup.

Use this thread to talk about Den, Angie, Arthur, poodle perms, poor fashion choices and Ethel’s Willy.

So Pat and Pete have finally remembered what name they gave their first born Hmm Michelle is such a birch to lofty.

igotdemons · 27/03/2019 02:27

So 45 Albert Square IS council owned - Pauline said so in the Vic when property prices were mentioned! Grin

Surprised that Lofty’s departure was so low key...! Confused

Akire · 27/03/2019 07:40

I thought that as well. Do wonder why the houses are so grotty mind. Hardly like slums where are falling down and no point.

Is it bit early to be buying council houses? Funny that some are council in terrace row but some are bought?

Yes Loftys random I’m going next week but I’m not coming in cafe again.

Akire · 27/03/2019 07:47

Why is she bringing baby to cafe and not on MT? Surely after what happened last time you want to spend every minute. It’s not like they pay high wages to staff so can’t afford it.

I was hiding when Arthur lost money again. Still least Mary might do something with it.

x2boys · 27/03/2019 08:23

Maybe the Houses were not necessarily built as council houses but the council bought them at some point?I thing Margaret Thatcher brought in Right to buy some time in the early 80,s ?Is Pete and Kathy flat council?

Limer · 27/03/2019 09:51

I picked that up too igotdemons So it is a council house! So if Pauline leaves it to Martin many years later (is that right, I wasn't still watching by then), Lou or Pauline/Arthur must buy it from the council. Right To Buy started in the early 80s as x2boys says, so there's a storyline in waiting there. I remember people were entitled to something like 75% off the market valuation if they'd been tenants for a long time. No way could Lou/Pauline/Arthur get even a small mortgage though - do their fortunes change or do Martin/Mark/Michelle help out?

Arthur's lost money just made my heart sink Akire Glad that Mary's conscience got the better of her, but it was just not believable that he'd put £300 in a tatty old brown envelope and carry it round with him all day. Or get drunk because he was scared that Pauline would hit him!!!

I can't stand Pete's ridiculous attitude about Kathy needing to be the little housewife, but I think that's rather the point, Kathy herself is quick to point out that she makes a huge contribution to their lifestyle!

Donna is getting interesting, she's obviously got a really nasty streak, but Kathy's reaction to being told she was her daughter wasn't believable either. Even without her Samaritans training, she'd surely realise that Donna needed help/support/answers (about the rape and who was the dad, for a start?). Telling her to leave them all alone would never have been the right thing to do!

Just had a binge catch-up.

The whole Angie "I'm suddenly in love with Sonny" storyline is sooooo unconvincing. I get that they wanted to leave the door open for Anita Dobson, but surely there was a more realistic way!!

Akire · 02/04/2019 17:04

Pauline and Pete seem to have been born in the house so would been mid 1940s or just after the war? Before council housing the council would have rehouse loads of people in private rent or maybe took over the house? The houses must been much more older as look grotty and run down so must have been built what 1880s would explain lack bathrooms and only tap in kitchen.

Limer · 02/04/2019 21:13

My binge catch-up!

Liked the wreath with black ribbons on Dot’s door to show there’d been a death.

Plenty of homophobia about. Ian saying Barry’s not gay any more, is he really that naïve?

Wilmott-Browne’s upping the ante with Kathy. Angie, Michelle & Sharon saying sexual harassment is just normal behaviour for male bosses and female staff… all one big game and shows they appreciate you… thank god we’ve come a long way since then.

Are we expected to believe Angie & Pat have just got out of bed, both with full faces of makeup and only slightly dishevelled hair?

OMG Michelle’s giant wide elastic belt, I had one of those!

Completely unrealistic exit of Angie. I did enjoy all the scenes of her rushing to answer the phone when it rang – brought back so many memories! It’s amazing to think life went on before the invention of the mobile phone!

gower4 · 02/04/2019 22:50

The poor actor who played Sonny. Worst part ever Grin

x2boys · 03/04/2019 19:35

Cindy!!! So lofty Angie and Mary,s left ,Lou must .be soon...

Akire · 03/04/2019 20:20

I’m not sure when Kathy rape happens, I only vaguely remembered Willmot brown in name only. Hadn’t realised he was so well thought of and “respectable”.

gower4 · 04/04/2019 12:30

Kathy being raped is quite soon

Limer · 08/04/2019 21:34

OMG Donna. It really is all about her!! Love the character though, so self-absorbed.

Ugh, male entitlement – Dot offering to lie back and think of England so that Charlie doesn’t go after any hitch-hikers! WTF was that storyline - Charlie the eternal layabout turns out to have a valid HGV licence - on what planet??????

Nice mention of the poll tax!

Ooooooooh Pauline’s told Michelle she knows Den’s Vicky’s father!!!!!

Portable computer! Wow, the eighties must nearly be over! Although I don't think they could be just switched on like the guy did on the bar, you'd have to plug them into a power socket first, they didn't have batteries.

I'm pleased to see the beginning of Pat & Frank's relationship & pub tenancy, I really like them both as characters.

breadzeb · 08/04/2019 21:44

OMG Donna. It really is all about her!! Love the character though, so self-absorbed.

I imagine it would be. Kathy has been horrible towards her, all she wanted was to be accepted. I don't think that's self absorbed at all, I think it's really normal. Wicket was nasty to her when all she wanted was someone to talk to :(

x2boys · 09/04/2019 13:43

Ah that's Sad,she had a troubled life.

x2boys · 09/04/2019 15:32

Rickeeee!!!

Limer · 09/04/2019 18:20

RIP Sandy. She was great as Sue.

brodybear · 09/04/2019 18:22

RIP Sad

gower4 · 09/04/2019 21:39

RIP Sandy.

Den in Strokes! I'd forgotten all about that time. The lonely Sunday episode was so depressing. Why didn't he just get a flat with Sharon and Roly??

HelenaDove · 11/04/2019 13:42

Wilmott Brown + Kathy scenes today.

HelenaDove · 11/04/2019 14:06

Christ the victim blaming from the police.

Akire · 11/04/2019 21:14

Goodness Arthur and the policeman trying decide if she was making it up so her husband wouldn’t find out. And genuinely believing that some women would say that!

When did special units come into being? Not sure what a police doctor would do at this stage I think it’s pre DNA

Akire · 11/04/2019 21:15

I supppose the only good things would be her bruises and fact her ran after and Aden found her. Can’t remember if he gets caught or not though.
