I certainly am

I don't think it's a good as it was when it first started, and it can be a tad predictable at times but I still love this show

The Irish kids were in care while she was in hospital. Very resilient kids I thought, especially the disinherited one.

Even DH is noticing the teal now. In the house of the disapproving mother, even the carpet was teal.

Girlfriend I did a placement nearly 25 years ago in learning disability and mental health hospitals. I spoke to women who were generally aged 40+ who had disclosed childhood sexual abuse, rapes or were pregnant who were 'placed' in the institution by their families as they had either some mild learning need or some very tenuous suggestion of a mental health issue. All to 'deal' with the problem. I've never forgot any of them and their bravery to keep going despite such appalling judgement and treatment.

  1. Don’t kill Barbara! I thought meningitis.
  2. The car was going too slowly to kill the husband
  3. The firemen went even more slowly. Wtf?
  4. Lived the hospital scenes with Monica Joan and mrs valentine!
  5. They can’t kill Barbara
  6. Didn’t they know then not to smoke in pg???
  7. Didn’t the doc know about Irish guy’s death??
Yorkshirebetty · 25/02/2018 22:38

Poor Barbara, she's so earnest and trying to be a good vicar's wife as well as a midwife.
I'm getting a bit obsessed with the teal now. The nun's habits and the nurses uniforms distinctly teal! The man's jumper in the hospital, and at one point Barbara wore double teal. In previous series the nurses dresses were pale blue. It's mad, I tell you!!

Excitedforxmas · 25/02/2018 22:50

She was promoting tampons at the sex and health talk so wonder if it's toxic shock?

Frombothsidesnow · 25/02/2018 22:51

That was a different midwife.

It's meningitis. She's got a fever, light sensitivity, headache, stiff neck and septicaemia.

SimonBridges · 25/02/2018 22:56

I thought the fireman were going very slowly. Also, Barbara didn’t seem too worried. ‘Oh when you’ve got a moment would someone mind helping my friend. She got stuck in a burning building a bit.’

As for the car going too slowly to kill him, don’t forget that he wouldn’t have been wearing a seat belt and cars were made out of little more than tin foil in those days.

Clawdy · 25/02/2018 22:59

Couldn't believe he was driving and barely looking at the road ahead! In an area he didn't know well.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 25/02/2018 23:00

Oh my god, I’ve just realised the Irish bloke was Kris in Hollyoaks! He’s grown up!

Agree with PP, cars back then were made of little more then paper mache...we also had a family friend who was killed when driving 20mph...obviously much more unlikely to be killed at that speed but it certainly happens and that’s now, without the paper mache cars and no seatbelt

Yorkshirebetty · 25/02/2018 23:05

No seatbelts, people were killed even in minor collisions. I'm glad it shows that the sixties weren't fabulous and swinging for everybody, and life was still tough for most people.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 25/02/2018 23:12

The "teenagers" at the health talk looked in their late 20s!

Teal hospital ward.

Bejazzled · 25/02/2018 23:22

CaramelisedSalt · 25/02/2018 23:24

Does anyone know why it would be frowned upon for unmarried women to use tampons?! Were they thought of as sexual in some way?

AnneEyhtMeyer · 25/02/2018 23:26

Because they would break the hyman I suppose.

Gosh the firemen were on a go-slow!

Frombothsidesnow · 25/02/2018 23:26

Yes, they 'took' your virginity. Some people still disapprove of teenagers using them.

SimonBridges · 25/02/2018 23:26

It broke your hymen.
I remember it being a ‘controversial’ when I started in the 80s.

westridingpauperlunaticasylum · 25/02/2018 23:33

Although the breaking of the hymen is quite a sad concept that still perpetuates today. I've seen a lot of hymens (don't ask haha!) and I am eternally baffled by this concept of hymenal integrity, even more so hymenal repairs 😳

WitchSharkadder · 25/02/2018 23:47

Yes, Ihope I was a bit Shock at grown up, non-mascara wearing Kris.

They better not kill off Barbara. I’m still not over Patsy & Delia leaving. Btw, have they even mentioned Sister Mary Cynthia this series? You would think they’d give us a little info about how she’s doing.

CaramelisedSalt · 25/02/2018 23:49

Oh gosh never thought of the hymen of course! As we know now though lots of things can break it such as vigourous exercise and it doesn't necessarily break through sex anyway! A pointless thing for women to feel guilty about, just think how many lives would have been made easier wearing tampons but they felt they shouldn't.

Have to say Sister Monica Joan was fab tonight, and that other patient..'custard' lol Grin

WitchSharkadder · 25/02/2018 23:50

Yes the tampons/hymen thing must’ve been common back then. I remember sneaking tampons in my teens because the thick pads my mother bought for me would show through my school trousers. My mother found them and had a fit at me because I shouldn’t use them if I was a virgin. This was the mid-90s!

saladdays66 · 25/02/2018 23:53

Actually, cars were heavier and better made in the 60s than they are today... no seat belts though.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 25/02/2018 23:53

I don’t even remember what happened to Sister Mary Cynthia!?

WitchSharkadder · 26/02/2018 00:05

Me neither really, Ihope, in the last series she was back and forth so much to hospitals, the mother house, mental institutions that I’m not sure where she finally ended up. I just thought they might have referenced her in a ‘she’s staying at so and so for the time being but doing okay...’ type way.

Bejazzled · 26/02/2018 00:11

Didn't she have a mental breakdown then was struggling to cope after the rape? Was sent to the mother house for peace and rehab iirc.

kungpopanda · 26/02/2018 04:03

Bored with sepsis now. What can we play next? Arson's boring too Gin
