Anyone watched it? Well acted and gripping, James Norton good as usual. Also nice change to see so many new faces. But I'm not sure about watching seven more episodes........

Ella
Yes chilling, that parting shot
"give my regards to your family" 😨😨

Antonio is too smarmy & equally sinister ( remember the man in the dungeon he'd had tortured? )
Driver man is sweet & I think wants out from the whole sickening mess, preferably with Ludymilla as I suspect he has a soft spot for her!

EllaHen · 21/01/2018 22:21

Yes, I don't care what happens in the end as long as driver and Ludmilla end up together - maybe in London.

thenightsky · 21/01/2018 22:26

I want Ludymilla and nice driver man to live happily ever after. Can't think it will happen though. Felt awful for poor Reuben too. And Ezra's mum weeping 'my boy, my beautiful boy' had me in tears. Sad

Sittinonthefloor · 21/01/2018 22:36

It's all getting a bit silly and unbelievable!

  1. when JN asked kleiman about ludmila and kleiman said 'no' wtf didn't JN say that the witness wouldn't go to the police until she was at the airport with her passport. He just gave a micro-shrug and gave up!
  2. if you think your dp is capable of being an international money launderer, to the extent that you do undercover detective work, and you are a bit of a goody two shoes wouldn't you just ltb?
  3. meeting with your dps business partner and friends and asking if they think your dp is dodgy is weird! She just seems really stupid! And the dp should be pissed off.
  4. why are all the houses in London like caves, and if your house was all dark and dingy wouldn't you put the lights on?
  5. are we meant to like JN or just think he's a bit of a twat?
  6. is JN actually a rubbish actor who managed to land two roles (granchester and prince A) that happened to require for absolutely no visible show of emotion? It's wearing a bit thin!
Clawdy · 21/01/2018 22:42

JN was a brilliant actor in Happy Valley. And he certainly wasn't playing a similar role there.

OP posts:
blueskypink · 21/01/2018 22:50

Sittin - I presume because they had the cctv by then, which they only thought to look for when ludmilla said what she'd seen.

blueskypink · 21/01/2018 22:52

And I think the idea is that JN is adopting a poker face so people don't know what he's up to. Vadim behaves in exactly the same way.

Sittinonthefloor · 21/01/2018 22:54

Clawdy - good! What sort of character was he in it? I'm glad he's not getting type cast in that case!
CCTV of what?

Sittinonthefloor · 21/01/2018 22:57

Clearly wise to have poke face with Vladimir. But he does poker face all the time - on his own, with girl friend, family! I think we should have an mn poker face emoji. 😐

blueskypink · 21/01/2018 22:58

CCTV of the party so they could see Ruben and the other chap together and, I think, the heavies going in.

But I might be wrong - I have flu and am struggling to follow the plot .....

blueskypink · 21/01/2018 22:59

Yes but he's lying to them all isn't he?

HoldMeCloserTonyDanza · 21/01/2018 23:02

I really liked tonight’s episode! I am another Joseph the Driver fan!

Those houses really are that dark - I know someone who lives in that street. He saw them filming! Lots of the houses do the downstairs-on-the-upstairs thing to get more light in the living rooms. I’m not sure if JN’s interior was shot on the mews though, because most of the houses don’t have a back garden, they just end in a slightly grim back wall with no windows.

Flomper · 21/01/2018 23:12

Im finding it watchable, but I am struggling to buy the central premise. Smarmy, posh London boy, golden spoon in mouth with his own smarmy hedge fund, smarmy multi million pound London pad, smarmy blond/bland fiance, and fab London social life - throws it all away and turns into a hardened gangster in a matter of weeks to avenge the death of an uncle, not a brother or lover, that mixed in completely different circles and was a bit of a prat. I just dont buy that he would be so hell bent on vengeance.

Also, hes just a little upstart pissant from a has been Moscow family. Old Vladim, an active Russian international drug dealing gangster, would surely just bump him off?

eloisesparkle · 22/01/2018 06:33

Holdmecloser
What street was it filmed on ?

EllaHen · 22/01/2018 07:26

They used that mews street in season 2 of The Crown. It's where Prince Phillip's chiropractor lived.

ReelingLush18 · 22/01/2018 08:20

Old Vladim, an active Russian international drug dealing gangster, would surely just bump him off? Agree but on the other hand Alex seems to have got up to speed on being a gangster very quickly - new kid on the block taking over from the established oligarchy?? It's turning into a game of cat and mouse, isn't it?

And it's personal, although agree that his allegiance to his uncle seems overdone? Yet maybe he always had more in common with his uncle than his depressed father - and maybe he's more like the former than we were initially led to believe. Hence the closeness and the need to avenge his death.

Rebecca is playing a dangerous game methinks. What's the betting at some point she becomes a pawn twixt Alex and Antonio.

Dulra · 22/01/2018 08:33

Is it wrong to fancy Antonio a bit? And Kleiman's driver? I think Kleiman's driver is lovely he reminds me of a cross between Joaquin Phoenix and the bearded SAS guy from who dares wins.

I am still sticking with this and interested in where it goes but what is ruining it for me is the really poor acting from the top 4 characters - Alex, Kleinman, Rebecca and the Mexican guy is pretty crap too. every scene those 4 are in together it feels like tumbleweed is passing by in between dramatic pauses and expressionless faces. They are what makes this all so droll in parts. I really don't know whether it is poor acting or meant to be like this. If it is meant to be like this for me it hasn't worked it feels like a bad daytime tv drama.

Loved the scenes shot in Tel Aviv never realised it looked like that way bigger city then I expected. At the moment I am routing for Vladim which I don't think I am meant to be at this stage but the others are so one dimensional their demise would not bother me in the slightest Grin

Clawdy · 22/01/2018 09:35

Sittinonthefloor in Happy Valley, he played a psychopathic, manipulative rapist from a very rough background!

OP posts:
thenightsky · 22/01/2018 10:04

He was terrifying as Tommy Lee Royce, Psychopath and Rapist, in Happy Valley.

HoldMeCloserTonyDanza · 22/01/2018 10:24

It’s in South Ken. It was also in 4 Weddings!

UrsulaPandress · 22/01/2018 13:01

I keep thinking of the local policeman in Doc Martin everytime I look at the driver. It's his eyes.

Historyismylife · 22/01/2018 23:26

I tbink the book on which this is based is not a fictional story but a collection of chapters based on journalist Misha Glenny's research into organised crime - someone correct me if I'm mistaken. I'm tbinking the story of Alex and his family has been construed to make non fiction into fiction for the telly which is why it is how it is. I will watch to the end but not really feeling anything for the characters and hoping JN is just putting on poker face because he and the others to he fair are all a bit wooden. He was terrifying in Happy Valley. Actually enjoying Vadim character and definitely seeing a bit of chemistry/tension between Joseph and Ludmilla.

ReelingLush18 · 23/01/2018 07:25

Historyismylife you're right about the book upon which the series is based. There was a related article in The Times/Sunday Times a couple of weeks ago.

hollyisalovelyname · 23/01/2018 07:50

As I said upthread the author Misha Glenny was interviewed on the Ryan Tubridy radio show about Mc Mafia. There's a podcast if you google. Worth a listen.
Very disturbing and distressing watching the crime lords, their operatives and victims.
The awfulness of it all and all for greed. We're all on Earth for a short time, what a way some people live their lives. Sad

Oblomov18 · 23/01/2018 13:57

Also a Joseph fan.
And like Dulra watched episode 5, where Vadim met Alex in Tel Aviv airport, (took me right back to see that big stretch of Tel Aviv beach) right after finishing watching latest episode of SAS Grin
