Anyone watched it? Well acted and gripping, James Norton good as usual. Also nice change to see so many new faces. But I'm not sure about watching seven more episodes........

Don't see why Natasha was lovely. She was old enough to have known exactly where all their money came from ...

sothatdidntwork · 12/02/2018 09:58

Yes you're probably right Gruach - how old was she? 18? 21?

I suppose that may rule out Katia (and possibly Femi) as well - is she closing her eyes to the source of the money?

Which just leaves the Ludmila family and the baby!

Gruach · 12/02/2018 10:07

who are you meant to root for?!"

Isn't that what made it so complex and involving? Rooting for the goody and shouting at the baddie is easy. Here we were implicated through trying to fathom gradations of evilness. 'Who would we be friends' with equalling 'just how much wrongdoing would we each be prepared to countenance'. Rather clever.

I wonder if Alex did really shoot Vadim?

Is it possible he just fired a shot, which he knew he had to do to earn the respect of (a) his business partners, and (b) their rivals (Ilya standing outside the building would have heard) - but he also knew that Vadim was about to die anyway?

MissEliza · 12/02/2018 10:11

To be fair to Dimitri (and therefore the rest of the Godmans), he did try to give it all up and live peacefully in London. He was well pissed off at Alex 'mixing in dirty money'. However I guess they are still living off the profits of their criminal activities in Russia.

Yes I like the insight into the respectable gone Bad. The slide into the decline.

SoupDragon · 12/02/2018 10:33

Shooting Vadim was actually the kind thing to do I think.

SoupDragon · 12/02/2018 10:34

I ended up rooting for almost everyone at some point - exceptions were Antonio and Kleimann I think.

AlbertaSimmons · 12/02/2018 11:26

I think he did shoot Vadim, more to prove to himself that he could do it, in the knowledge that the die was cast and there would be no going back, and for revenge over Boris. He also knew that Vadim was moments from death, so he can persuade himself that it was a mercy.

I think he snubbed Antonio because in some ways he got Alex into this mess, and he's now lower in the pecking order - Alex was putting him in his place (and he knows Antonio is interested in Rebecca).

sothatdidntwork · 12/02/2018 12:23

the other thing i didn't understand. When Alex first makes The Proposal to Harvard Russian, it's on the basis that none of 'the product' will enter Russia, isn't it - Harvard Russian's gang will just get a commission.

But the proposal in the contract given to pretend-Antonio is that the Alex syndicate will get 50% of all of the consignment and distribute it in Russia (and any other market that pretend-Antonio's gang isn't in). So at some point the Harvard Russian gang and alex seem to have changed the game plan?

Natasha was 21, I now realise. I suppose it's possible that she could have known that Vadim was shady but not actually been aware that that had involved killing, or ordering the killing of, multiple victims - Vadim probably tried to keep that side a bit hush hush!

Thymeout · 12/02/2018 12:30

I enjoyed it, but I don't want a second series. Too many successful drama serials, like Dr Foster and True Detective, have bombed in the follow-ups. I don't think further adventures of Alex would tell us any more about his character. It'd be just another thriller.

MissEliza · 12/02/2018 13:53

The second series of Dr Foster was dire.

MajesticWhine · 12/02/2018 14:38

Agree no need to drag it on to another series. It could only make it worse.

eloisesparkle · 12/02/2018 16:14

Why did Vadim's friend allow Alex to kill him?

awishes · 12/02/2018 16:20

Because his boss said he needed to save his own family and asked if he was going to put Vladim before his wife and children.

Gruach · 12/02/2018 16:37

Vadim' eyes as he realised the betrayal ... Worth the misery of the endless greeny-grey London paint palette.

bbcessex · 12/02/2018 20:24

I thought Alex snubbed Antonio because Antonio had spent time with Rebecca behind his back..

ssd · 12/02/2018 20:39

surely not, that's a bit wet for an international crime lord bbcessex

one other thing, how will Masha be taken care off to the tune of £20k a month if Alex has left his family??

EllaHen · 12/02/2018 21:41

Loved the snubbing of Antonio. Closest I got to a high five.

Still loving Joseph. Especially the scene near the end where he looks into Ludmilla's eyes before they kiss. Swoon.

Hope we see Oksana in more things. She's fast turning into a National Treasure. Grin

ReelingLush18 · 13/02/2018 10:56

how will Masha be taken care off to the tune of £20k a month if Alex has left his family?? A trust fund had probably already been set up before Alex defected to the dark side.

MichaelBendfaster · 13/02/2018 11:35

how will Masha be taken care off to the tune of £20k a month if Alex has left his family??

Wasn't/isn't Alex paying for it himself? He must be well-off through his hedge fund, not just through his family.

I'm not sure about Antonio Mendez. When was he supposed to have stolen the name and identity of Alex's Harvard peer? Back in Harvard days? But he wouldn't have known he was going to come across Alex all those years later – it would have been a massive coincidence. And if he assumed a new identity more recently, how about all his friends at his villa? Do they also think he's Antonio? Or do they know his real identity but he's sworn them all to silence and not to give it away?

EssentialHummus · 13/02/2018 15:16

Do they also think he's Antonio? Or do they know his real identity but he's sworn them all to silence and not to give it away?

That's a good point.

I assumed he stole the identity more recently, basically by looking at that alumni page (?) that Alex/Rebecca were looking at at one point.

MichaelBendfaster · 13/02/2018 15:19

I assumed he stole the identity more recently

Yes, it's one possible explanation, but all of his current circle would have to be either very new and so unaware of his past, or sworn to secrecy about it.

SoupDragon · 13/02/2018 15:31

Why did fake Antonio become fIe Antonio and approach Alex though? Was he in with Kleimann?
