Anyone watched it? Well acted and gripping, James Norton good as usual. Also nice change to see so many new faces. But I'm not sure about watching seven more episodes........

When did that happen? I thought at the cashpoint he was withdrawing £250....or was this an earlier scene when he was on his PC? I dont think i paid close enough attention!!

He went to his office, transferred the £25,000 and the left. At that point he picked up the hit man (who was then called off) and went to the cash point.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 08/02/2018 07:32

I am almost only watching this now because I love Joseph so much and am rooting for him and Lyudmilla. And the actor who plays him is as hot as hell.

EssentialHummus · 08/02/2018 08:28

HE transferred that £25k to himself/his private account.

ReelingLush18 · 08/02/2018 08:31

EssentialHummus well spotted. I did see him doing the transaction but didn't notice the money was going to him. Would £25K be sufficient for a 'hit' on a gangster bigwig like Vadim? Would have thought he would have commanded a much higher price on his head???

MissEliza · 08/02/2018 09:15

Antonio has got come into it somehow. Kleinmann warned Alex about getting involved with the Mexicans. I hate the way Antonio keeps sniffing around Rebecca and she seems to think he's wonderful, while Alex is a 'rough little boy from Moscow'.I wonder if he's going to move in there.

lookingforthecorkscrew · 08/02/2018 09:27

Is he actually called Antonio?

MissEliza · 08/02/2018 09:32

No he was pretending to be 'Antonio Mendes' but Rebecca thinks that's who he is. She looks down her nose at Kleinmann and has no idea 'Antonio' is even worse.

whataconundrum · 08/02/2018 11:31

This week he looked very much like he was following the Joey Tribbiani "I smell a fart" school of acting

Haha, that did make me laugh.

I thought he was amazing in Happy Valley but really unconvincing in McMafia

SoupDragon · 08/02/2018 11:54

I never quite grasped who Antonio was. Was it ever explicitly stated that he wasn’t Antonio? I remember Alex being alone with him at his villa/swimming off his boat but can’t remember what they said.

Lentilbaby · 08/02/2018 14:43

I love watching this with all of you wonderful people....makes my mind boggle with all the possibilities......Can’t wait until Sunday!

thenightsky · 08/02/2018 15:33

Re Antonio... I think he was a Mexican gangster/drug dealer or something. He got hold of Alex's year book from his private school and picked the identity of a Mexican boy from the same year. However, it was clear that the real Antonio looked nothing like south-of-france Antonio. Alex knew this but went along with the fallacy for some reason. I do hope it becomes clear why.

MissEliza · 08/02/2018 18:11

It seems that every time Alex has had s chance to back out, he hasn't. He could have chosen not to go to south of France, not to steal Vadim's heroin etc but he hasn't. Why is he going to Moscow? I think his dad is smarter than him, even with a vodka soaked brain!
I really hope there's a second series. I love the Godman family. I think the actors have great chemistry.

Toyboysrus · 08/02/2018 18:53

Has anybody read the book on which it's based? I've just googled it and was surprised to find that the book is factual, I thought this series was an adaptation of a novel. Maybe everybody knew that apart from me!

MissEliza · 08/02/2018 19:10

I think I'll read the book once I finish the book I'm currently reading. It being factual is more appealing to me. I don't usually like to watch films of books I've read and vice versa.

sothatdidntwork · 08/02/2018 20:34

The obvious answer is that it's Dimitri's man who killed Natasha by mistake - so perhaps that must mean it was someone else! But who? Definitely aiming at Vadim, I thought.

Yes to Ellahen about Rebecca saying Alex is just deep down a poor no good Russian boy. In a way the whole thing started because he felt people were prejudiced against him because of his origins (so he turned down the 'safe' partner)- and it turns out that even she was! On the other hand she can't really be blamed for being annoyed with him!

octonaught · 08/02/2018 21:25

Here's the book

Bears no resemblance to the series, and sample is a bit heavy going.

I would hope there is a second series. There's way too many loose ends to wrap up in One episode:
Where have Josef & Lumila gone?
The Mexican drug cartel
Antonio & Rebecca...?
Pregnant Masha
Simeon Kleinman
The Heroin in India
Alex's mum - so much potential
Does Dmitri go down in a blaze of vodka soaked glory?
Vadim - does he survive
Shady Ilya (Grey Bob Man)

Oh there's plenty more.
And I will not get tired of watching James Norton in the shower Grin

MissEliza · 08/02/2018 21:37

Don't forget Katya (and Femi).

AlbertaSimmons · 08/02/2018 21:37

Again, Natasha wasn’t killed by mistake. The assassin checked that it was her before he shot her.

eloisesparkle · 09/02/2018 07:49

Toyboy
Somewhere on this thread it was mentioned that the author Misha Glenny of the book McMafia, did an interesting interview with Ryan Tubridy on RTE radio. Worth a Google and listen.

BagelGoesWalking · 09/02/2018 11:19

The author did an interview on BBC Radio London (Robert Elms show) just before it started on tv. Very interesting interview, fascinating about how much research he'd done. He said he has happy with the show - I suppose he wouldn't say anything else! I have a feeling his book might be a lot better.

I can't get over the wooden acting of JN. It's just really bad.

Toyboysrus · 09/02/2018 16:04

Thanks all who replied about the book. Looking forward to the finale on Sunday, hope it's a good ending.

eloisesparkle · 09/02/2018 17:41

Mr and Mrs Godman worked together before

Mc Mafia?
bbcessex · 10/02/2018 08:48

Ludmilla (sp?) and Josef are the only ones I actually care about now... I really really hope it comes good for them.

Have now started watching Happy Valley after the comments on here - OMG - it's brutal 😱

MissEliza · 10/02/2018 13:20

How far into the series are you BBC? I rewatched both series when I had the flu last month. I don't think anyone can deny JN's acting skills after watching HV.

bbcessex · 10/02/2018 17:41

We are watching episode 3 & 4 MissEliza - can't wait.
