Whoops that link didn't work, try this one!

SoupDragon · 03/12/2017 14:07

I think actors have an advantage over sports personalities because they've probably done some dance and can act for the characterisation part. Sports personalities probably have an advantage over actors in fitness and strength.

I think Louis Smith used to get criticism about his lack of characterisation up til his Charleston where he either had lessons or it all clicked.

CassandraCross · 03/12/2017 14:22

I remember them going on and on at Jay about characterisation sometimes they seem to forget that people are watching on television and can see subtle facial expressions more clearly, over the top mugging and face pulling are utterly awful and cringe-worthy on a tv screen, it's not panto played to a theatre audience.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 03/12/2017 14:40

That's a good point, Cassandra - I've been watching a couple of the pasos this year thinking that the "stern dramatic faces" might be a touch overdone - because we can see them in close-up!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 03/12/2017 14:44

Thank goodness she reminded me she is 59 !

Yes indeed!

I missed most of Mollie's dance because I was trying to put some butter in my baked potato and somehow that was more interesting.

Oooh! Was it Lurpak?

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 03/12/2017 14:58

Love paso - Derek Hough and Chelsie Hightower (with, apparently, Mark Ballas on guitar!)

RhiannonOHara · 03/12/2017 15:22

Gemma was quite good but looked preoccupied.
Joe: dance of the night. Inspired choreography – Katya is a GENIUS – and it was suitably uneasy and off-kilter and nasty, just like the MC and like Cabaret in general. His acting was fantastic.
Mollie was OK, nice to look at, but not earthy enough. Not her fault though; they gave her a character and song that are sweet and light and so that's how she played it.
Debbie's routine just all looked like Giovanni chucking her about.
Davood had the short straw song-wise; what a proggy rock-opera mess! He was too wobbly.
Alexandra left me cold. Very flat, when a Charleston should make you want to clap and shriek. Those who say she was bound to stomp in those boots, they did have a heel so not really an excuse! The gushing about getting the Pimp Slot was excruciating. Every time she's on a mic it's like she's accepting an Oscar. Dial it down FFS.

I think it's Gemma and Davood in the DO. Can't remember who scored higher but suspect, all other things being equal, Gemma will be able to pull out more of an assured performance and attend to her frame and win it.

CremeFresh · 03/12/2017 16:30

TheOnly who is the celeb in that paso ? It was amazing !

bookbook · 03/12/2017 16:37

Hello! I was out all day , and on the evening, so I have just watched it .
well - Mollie and AJ - it felt more like a sugary sweet ballroom than a rumba to me , all a bit 'girly' . Not keen
Gemma looked flatfooted somehow, and I thought something went wrong when the camera wasn't quite showing her feet , when they were doing cross footing on the spot ( technical term !) shame, as I though the song fitted the dance
Joe was excellent, but it took me to the samba roll to realise it was a samba ( doh!)
Debbie was good, but maybe I was influenced by the song , it was nice to have a song that matches the dance and the characterisation.
Davood just looked a bit floppy somehow , and it was still Nadiya showing off to my mind.
AB great charleston, but I am just not a charleston fan , so it left me a bit cold
Right, thats my tuppence worth , I am thinking no one has truly got better recently, though Joe is starting to shone a bit - ready for tonight now :)
DO between Gemma and Davood perhaps. I do like Gemma though, so don't want her to go.

FuzzyCustard · 03/12/2017 16:41

I AM 59! (It's like Spartacus)

RhiannonOHara · 03/12/2017 16:42

I am thinking no one has truly got better recently

Really good point, I hadn't thought about that. Maybe that's why I'm finding it a bit unengaging at the moment. I enjoyed Mollie's dnace last week, when she suddenly seemed to blossom. And the best thing about Blackpool IMO was Gemma's dance; she seemed to have taken on all the judges' previous comments and worked very hard to improve – but since then they do all seem to have plateaued a bit.

I think Joe is the most exciting, in that I'm eager to see what he produces every week. I think that has a lot to do with Katya's routines, though, probably more than his dancing per se.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 03/12/2017 17:07

Creme - I knew that Derek Hough is a regular pro on DWTS so I looked up the woman, thinking she must have been an amazing celeb partner, but it turns out she is another pro and it’s a pro routine. So I was a little bit disappointed but also really impressed by the quality of the pro dancers they have! Grin

FuzzyCustard · 03/12/2017 17:44

Agree about the "no one got better recently". I do feel less engaged with it all this year, perhaps this is why - several people were clearly very good to start with, and I do like to see the real learners have a bash.

I still think it will be Davood to leave "tonight".

ilovesooty · 03/12/2017 18:37

Don't look at the Strictly thread on aibu. Some fucker has put a semi spoiler on it.

TheSassyAssassin · 03/12/2017 18:39

Thanks for the warning ilovesooty Xmas Smile

SchadenfreudePersonified · 03/12/2017 18:41

A lot of us seem to have found the show less than enthralling this year FuzzY.

I thin for me it is a combination of factors -
blatant favouritism,
a "10 second" rule that appears and disappears like the smile on the Cheshire Cat,
too much "faffing abaht",
shite costumes that look as though they have been stripped off a dead tramp the producers have found in a skip,
Tess getting more and more patronising by the minute,
Bruo becoming a parody of himself,
Craig losing his bite,
dances that look nothing like what they are supposed to be,
too many different dances in each show - would love to go back to TWO dances,
too many X-factor-type sob stories/ complaints/ excuses (I get dizzy/ I'm 59, you know/ I am so honoured/ I fellow my bum when I was first learning to walk etc etc etc),
unnecessary lifts and gusset exhibitionism,
those effing awful VTs (please, just let us watch the training)

For crying out loud - just come out, dance, take the compliments and criticisms and get on with it!

bonfireheart · 03/12/2017 18:42

Re: the gapping between Gemma and Alijaz. I read a few strictly blogs and apparently this is a known Alijaz issue and he does it quite often with his partners.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 03/12/2017 18:43

*fell on my bum, not fellow my bum

SchadenfreudePersonified · 03/12/2017 18:45

Interesting bonfire - maybe he has . . . reactions to close contact with the lay-deez and it's embarrassing. Blush

Redcrayons · 03/12/2017 18:54

Thanks for the heads up Sooty, I've managed to avoid spoilers for the whole series so far.

I think tonight it will be Mollie vs Davood with Davood going.

OublietteBravo · 03/12/2017 19:18

Curious to see who goes tonight. Expecting it to be Davood, Gemma or Mollie.

Redcrayons · 03/12/2017 19:20

Finally!

bookbook · 03/12/2017 19:22

here !

ShirleyPhallus · 03/12/2017 19:22

Signing in, having finally caught up from last night. Is there a new thread yet, this ones almost full?

ScaryMonstersAndSuperCreeps · 03/12/2017 19:24

I would like Gemma to go.
I voted for Davood and Mollie. I thought there were 3 Leading Ladies?????
