Did you watch the interview with Kevin Clifton that someone posted earlier on this thread where he talked about how 'corrupt' he found competition dancing? He explained how top dancers pay a fortune for special lessons with top teachers who are also judges (as otherwise the dancers would be 'overlooked' in the competitions.) I'm paraphrasing but he claimed he had left competitions as he felt even if he won, after paying for these lessons with judges, it would feel like he's paid for the accolade and he wouldn't know if he really was the best.

I'm not in the dance world so have no idea how it works but it does sound like, being a subjective sport , it is open to people 'playing' the system. What a shame, if so.

MrsJayy · 06/11/2017 13:27

It seems very competative I guess they want to win . I will watch the Kevin video

MrsJayy · 06/11/2017 13:32

I used to be part of a ballroom wheelchair dance team a million years ago a team employed a top dance coach from the able dance world for a national comp and they won and beat us it was nuts

mydogisthebest · 06/11/2017 13:37

Ihavechillytoes, a sensible post. I am sick of the conspiracy theories - it's a fix, Shirley didn't like Aston, Shirley loves Mollie, Shirley wanted Aston out to make sure Debbie wins!

The simple fact is Aston was obviously not popular with the people who vote. No other reason. Plus of course, he did a bad dance so, rightly, Mollie was saved.

morningtoncrescent62 · 06/11/2017 13:41

I'm sad to see Aston go. Apart from the silly 'storyline' about the barber which made no sense at all, I quite liked the dance. But I do wish Janette would get help with her storylines. The only successful one I've seen her do was That Paso with Peter Andre, the one where he rescued her from walking the plank. I loved that.

For me, Ruth and Anton's paso doesn't win the Comedy Paso Award, or even come close. First place, Julian Clary and Erin. Second place John Sargeant and Kristina.

Someone mentioned lovely VWs upthread, and I'm trying to remember one with Ian Waite. It was with a not-brilliant but OK partner, I think she was either a sportswoman of some kind or maybe a sports presenter, and I think she was wearing a floaty blue dress which doesn't narrow it down much for a VW. Anyone got any clue who this might have been? I remember thinking it was simply beautiful.

Yes!!!! SmileGlitterballSmileGlitterballSmileGlitterballSmileGlitterballSmileGlitterballSmileGlitterballSmileGlitterballSmileGlitterball

Of course Jodie and Ian. Thank you, HangryHanderson, it's made my day to see this again.

Iwantacampervan · 06/11/2017 13:52

Morningtoncrescent62 - Ian Waite was partnered with athletes Denise Lewis and Jade Johnson.

HangryHanderson · 06/11/2017 13:52

SYTYCD so you think you can dance

Janette has been given theme/storyline from producers as a direct steal in some cases (not just her either, I've seen the red undies gasolina samba more than once) She was told to do the royalty throne theming with Julien for their tango (Mark Ballas' paso far better) and the Jack Sparrow paso was done in Germany and the States to name but two. Allison Holker below had less ballroom experience than her sleb.

Aw you're welcome lovely.

Iwantacampervan · 06/11/2017 13:56

Thank you for posting that HangryHanderson - no props or costumes! I wish they would go back to dances without any 'extras' or an elaborate story/forcing the dance to meet a theme.

blueskyinmarch · 06/11/2017 14:06

Just thinking about the comment upthread that Aston didn’t seem very engaged on Saturday. Isn’t his wife expecting a baby? Maybe there had been developments in the department and his head just wasn’t in it? Not sure when she is due but they announced the pregnancy in May so could be soon. It is possible he might be relieved to be out now?

CaveMum · 06/11/2017 14:14

To be fair there are only a handful of top competitive coaches out there so it's inevitable that some of the Pro dancers will have been coached by, or at least spent some time with, Shirley. I think I'm right in saying that Len may have done some work with Anton and Erin during their competitive career.

There's another top female coach, Lorna Lee, who auditioned for the Head Judge role before Len was given the job. She was, so I am told, considered too critical. She has coached British, European and World Champions over the years as well as quite a few former-Strictly Pros.

Ah, those were the days. No faffing abaht, just straight into hold and get on with it. Do you remember the year they introduced 'props night'? Thin end of the wedge that turned out to be!

MrsJayy · 06/11/2017 14:23

And also tbf if you are competing in anything you want the best coach possible so you can win

GrouchyKiwi · 06/11/2017 14:57

theromanempire I love watching Danny & Oti's dances. My favourites are the American Smooth you mentioned and his ChaChaCha from week one. I wish they had done that again in the final instead of the samba. It would have been amazing.

Watching the show, I thought Alexandra and Davood were wonderful (D& Nadiya were my favourites of the night), Mollie & AJ's dance was beautiful, Susan was great, Debbie fine (I also didn't understand the perfect score), and the rest disappointing in one way or another. Apart from Ruth and Anton, whose dance was ... something.

I thought the right person went based on the dance off, but it's a shame that the choreography and theming really let Aston down. VW should be a thing of beauty and that dance wasn't. But M&AJ's was fabulous and she definitely improved in the dance off while Aston didn't fix his mistakes. Aljaz's face was a picture when Shirley voted for M&AJ.

I need to watch Gorka & Oti dance a salsa or something like that together. That would be beyond fabulous. Ooh, maybe an Argentine Tango.

GrouchyKiwi · 06/11/2017 14:59

I forgot about Joe and Katya. I LOVED their Charleston.

MissEliza · 06/11/2017 15:06

I’ve been reading people on social media acting outraged and shocked. Much mention was made of Craig’s 4 but that’s not what got him in the dance off. Dd and I voted for Aston for the first time because we were worried he might get voted off after being so far down the leaderboard. Clearly not many other people did, so he got in the dance off.
Lots of people are also complaining about Ruth and Susan hanging on because of their fan bases. Even more reason to pick up the phone and vote for the ones who look like their on slippy ground!

MrsJayy · 06/11/2017 15:12

I am hoping lots of people forget joe and katiya are there so they sneak into the final 😀

dolfinne · 06/11/2017 15:15

it doesnt suprise me about the AJ and Chloe having lessons from Shirley, maybe if Aj's parents own a dance school they knew Shirley, isnt Aj's brother on another dance show ?
i watched a programme a few months ago about children competing in ballroom and the dance teacher it focused on seem to judge at all the competitions

maddiemookins16mum · 06/11/2017 15:22

Off subject (slightly) I know, but if ever I need cheering up I watch Ed Balls' Gangnam Stlyle dance. Works every time.

MrsJayy · 06/11/2017 15:22

Google tells AJs brothercurtis was on Dancing with the stars and he is a year younger than Aj these kids must have been dancing before they could walk

MrsJayy · 06/11/2017 15:24
