I agree with mrsjamin.
I know it's already been said but Aston's choreography was awful.
The song was wrong, the afro was awful, the dance wasn't nice. I thought Aston would be a definite finalist but there was something distinctly lacking in his ballroom. He's great at the 'tricks' but he didn't have that certain something to pull off the VW. Plus Aj's choreography was spot on.
As with other shows, strictly is a popularity contest. Plenty of other winners gave not been the best dancer.

ladymariner · 05/11/2017 23:38

2rebecca aliaj and Janette are married

HangryHanderson · 05/11/2017 23:39

Eh? Aljaz is married to Janette. Had he not got an eye-candy fanbase, he might have been up against his missus in the DO. That's why he was consoling her. Probably knew his own salsa sucked too.
Iirc she got him to show Jake the lifts a few years back. So in theory, she could have helped coach Gemma's salsa and he could have helped Aston's VW but that would only work if they are in near studios and if other pros don't call foul (I think Neil helps Katya) and acc to ITT Gorka and Janette would swap demos and tips as they were adjacent in training. It also depends on how much time they have.
It is simply a surprise that, married to Aljaz, her ballroom (his gapping aside) hasn't improved.
He can be slated for other things but Brendan was no slouch in that department. He came to dancing late and specialises in Latin but absolutely got his ballroom up to the level where he is proficient in both.

2rebecca · 05/11/2017 23:40

And viewers are supposed to know that how exactly???

Emilybrontescorsett · 05/11/2017 23:40

Oh and Ruth and Anton had me howling with laughter. Brought back memories of that other classic moment, Todd Cater on dancing on Ice.

Emilybrontescorsett · 05/11/2017 23:40

Todd Carty not Carter.

CalmanOnSpeeddial · 05/11/2017 23:44

The fact that Aljaz and Janette are recently married has been discussed at length on It Takes Two, just like Karen’s marriage to Kevin. The fact that they’re a couple has been mentioned in passing on the main show occasionally over the last four years since they joined - all of them have been couples since they joined the show.

AmIthatbloodycold · 05/11/2017 23:44

2rebecca? I would be amazed if any viewer DIDN'T know that

ladymariner · 05/11/2017 23:46

You asked what Aljaz had to go with it, now you know.

ladymariner · 05/11/2017 23:46

Go? Do, even Grin

HangryHanderson · 05/11/2017 23:48

That they're together? I don't suppose you are, seeing as she doesn't go by Janette Skorjanec.
It's common knowledge if you follow that kind of thing (she also shagged Pash and Artem lucky girl and Pash used to be with Anya iirc) but unlike the Jordans and Cliftons who took their spouses' surnames, there's no real reason you'd know except they were together when they first joined Strictly.
I think it's cute, particularly the height difference, but I don't think it matters apart from it must be a litle hard when they are pitched against each other either in dance-offs or finals. (Karen with Will Young I am sure was meant to be up against her DH and SIL until he dropped out). It's a gimmick but not exploited as much as they do in DWTS where they have married pros paired up with married slebs to create faux tension/rivalry,

CalmanOnSpeeddial · 05/11/2017 23:49

Oh I’m sure that loads of casual viewers don’t know one pro dancer from another. Pointless rounds on the subject tend to show that the only pro with any real name recognition amongst the general population is Anton.

It Takes Two gets about 10% of the audience of the main show and I’d guess that that 10% are the only ones who could list you all the pros and tell you who they’re married to.

2rebecca · 05/11/2017 23:52

Neither my husband or I know and i've never watched it takes 2, a lot of Strictly viewers just watch the Sat and Sun shows and aren't that interested in the pros private lives and wish they could be more professional. I just watch strictly. If they're going to have emotional breakdowns and need consoling if their partner gets voted off I'd rather they didn't employ married couples. It does seem very incestuous with husbands and wives and siblings. Are there really that few professional dancers that they have to be related to each other?

HangryHanderson · 05/11/2017 23:57

I don't know how many pros there are at competition level/at the end of their competing 'life' that could do Strictly, cave or polkadots probably could answer that one...but there are bound to be couples that dance together and are together-together. Was always thus, right back to series 1 when Brendan and Camilla were together.
I have heard it say that the dancing world is incestuous, yes, but can't say it spoils my enjoyment of the show. I don't find it unprofessional for pros to show emotions and don't get het up if there are biases in the clauditorium.
If the producers only employed single dancers, you know there'd be more Strictly Curse bullshittery and I don't miss that one jot.

Horsemad · 05/11/2017 23:58

2rebecca - Give over!
Who mentioned emotional breakdowns FGS?!

bonfireheart · 06/11/2017 00:01

You need a lie down 2rebecca you sound like such a miserable person.

HangryHanderson · 06/11/2017 00:02

So top of my head:
Brendan - Camilla
Darren - Lilya (sp)
Vincent - Flavia
James - Ola
Kevin - Karen
Aljaz - Janette
Neil - Katya
and Oksana's DH used to do/does choreo
Oti is also married to her professional dance partner

You meet at work right, why should dancing be any different?!

2rebecca · 06/11/2017 00:03

I'm not that interested in the pros and am surprised so many people are. The ones I liked a few years ago aren't there any more anyway. Kevin annoyed me but if Susan likes him he's maybe not that bad. Anton is asexual and a bit weird but copes well despite being given women who can't dance on a regular basis.
I've never voted for the pro, just for the celeb, and only if they're someone I recognise as a celeb (wife/ husband of celeb or dead celeb doesn't count) and who is genuinely learning to dance

Ceto · 06/11/2017 00:04

Aston's negative comments all focussed on the style/choreography, which was nothing to do with him, he danced the routine he was given well.

Not so - they rightly criticised his footwork and the fact that he was quite boppy and up and down, as opposed to gliding smoothly. And it's not as if he didn't know what was needed, the judges and people like Ian Waite have been banging on about that over and over again when other people have done VWs.

sweetbitter · 06/11/2017 00:05

I am so disappointed Aston left. I blame it on:

  1. He seemed weirdly disconnected during the dance (first time through), blank facial expression, no connection with partner, and then quite detached and seemingly not bothered about judge's comments afterwards. Like his head was somewhere else completely.
  1. Craig then gave him a 4 which regardless of all of the above I thought was totally ridiculous as the dance itself seemed way more proficient than a 4. If he'd got a 6 from Craig he would have overtaken Gemma in the leaderboard and be level pegging with Mollie and Johnnie which seems much more reflective of his performance to me.

I guess there were other factors like choreography, plus Viennese Waltz tends to be dull compared to other dances.

Couldn't really blame Craig and Shirley for voting him off at the end. Although I'd much rather he stayed over Mollie as I think he is more original and entertaining overall, there was little to choose between them tonight. Really disappointing though.

HangryHanderson · 06/11/2017 00:08

Ooh and I forgot Nicole Cutler bearded for was married to Matt.
I think Pash and Anya had already broken up pre Strictly

Brendan left Camilla because of Natasha
Flavia left Vincent because of Matt then Matt because of Jimi
Kristina had a thing with Shirley's ex Corky
Dancing is an intimate thing

Sorry, I am a terrible person when it comes to gossip Blush Glitterball

Ceto · 06/11/2017 00:08

Not sure you can say that Anton is asexual, 2rebecca. He's married and the father of twins.

bonfireheart · 06/11/2017 00:11

It's easy 2rebecca as you seem to dislike the show so much I suggest you stop watching and exit this thread.

bonfireheart · 06/11/2017 00:12

"Pros are having too much sex and need to stop shagging"
Followed by
"Anton isn't shagging any celebs so is asexual and weird"
Okay....

HangryHanderson · 06/11/2017 00:16

2rebecca I'm sure you're not alone in that.
Many vote each year for who they enjoy seeing, whether that's for technical or entertainment value.
Many refuse to vote for ringers on principle.
But some will vote for 'their' pros too - whilst I am not a Fanton(!) yes, I know, horrendous term - almost as bad as Fanilow, I have to confess to throwing him a vote with Katie D as I wanted him to make the finals.
Oti has a fanbase. Gorka is very popular.
Anton has his fantons. Brendan usually has a loyal legion but even they couldn't save him this year (he usually gets a partner to Halloween).
But given Pasha leaving first, it goes to show you that even pros who have been there a while with established fanbases won't automatically go through, because, as you say, there are many on a Saturday night who will vote for the sleb they preferred the best. Which is how it should be. Glitterball
