Any predictions for how the series is going to pan out? I think Georgie and Maisie will bond over some horrific accident. The Lane sisters have had a few mentions so maybe Fingers will feature a bit more - thinking about the scene from s2. I got the impression Elvis was losing interest but they can't just leave him to fade into insignificance like they did with CJ can they?!

kazzaD66 · 11/10/2017 17:47

Hmm, really not sure what to think. Way too much of Maisie, esp as I can't stand the character, but maybe TG is looking towards a possible S4 and making her the focus. If so, unless she changes, I not sure I can take it! Can't believe her behaviour would be tolerated in RL and can't believe CJ or Kingy haven't stepped in on a couple of occasions when they've seen things first hand. I know CJ might be wanting to give Georgie more responsibility but he just seems to be passing the buck. Either he's already a bit wibble or TG has decided to play fast and loose with his character just to suit the plot line.

Talking of CJ, not nearly enough of him for my liking. 'Calm down and don't point your finger at me' was about his biggest scene, apart from the cuddly goat, when all he did was say a couple of things and stroked the kid! I don't really want CJ to go a bit wibble but if that's what it takes to get him more air time, then so be it.

Plenty of 2 Section banter but all the focus seems to be on the 2 new recruits. The others seem sidelined, with only the odd couple of lines here and there, esp poor old Brains, although his line about Georgie's perfect teeth was one of the best things about Ep 1 Grin Brains, Fingers and CJ are the only original guys left but unfortunately, it seems as if they are being left behind Sad

Will have to see how Ep 2 goes, although not sure when I'll be able to watch it given that DS rather annoyingly breaks up for a TWO week half term on Friday! Will need to ship him off to a friend for the day so I can secret squirrel watch Hmm

Rhubarb01 · 11/10/2017 18:40

Well, I had a second viewing when I got home from work this afternoon and a few things struck me.

The opening sequence in Syria. I can't believe that Georgie could be arguing with the driver like that when surely Elvis is in charge? For example the radio says abort the mission and Elvis says nothing but Georgie shouts at Maisie to do as instructed but she's just the medic! However, I also noticed a little moment when Georgie gives Maisie and Elvis a suspicious glance when Maisie replies to something he says. The back story has been leaked on this already but it was interesting that I saw the eyes flitting from one to the other.

Maisie - as well as being very annoying, was also a little bit inconsistent. There were a couple of scenes when she and Georgie seemed to be a little more on the same page - when Georgie was treating the man with the bad leg, Maisie acknowledged she was good at her job and also when they were chatting outside about Milan. There was a shared little smirk and I thought they had the potential to bond. The rest of the time she was just too loud, brash and upfront and didn't come across as particularly bright!

I quite like the new member Rab. He's supposed to be more intelligent so I suppose he fills in some of the gaps in knowledge by educating Two Section eg Geography of the region, religion etc

I reckon CJ is going to consider leaving the army. He looks cheesed off and a bit tired. From what we've heard it sounds like that's the intention and, if so, it's working. One thing that did grate on me was the little speech he gave to the section with the Nepalese Commander when they were loading the truck particularly when he said the earthquake had happened, "frighteningly close to the earthquake of 2015." It just sounded exactly as it was intended to be, background information for the audience, not true dialogue.

Ditto to the scene with Georgie's mum. What was the point? Tell you what I would have finished my cake first!

I know there's been a lot of conversation about MK's appearance. Last year this was discussed and it was mentioned then that she does have a naturally darker complexion because her mother is from Gibraltar. She didn't strike me as wearing a lot of makeup and when I recall the way she looked when she was abducted in series 2 she certainly looked pretty roughed up - apart from the teeth. TG has made his joke about that already.

I'll keep watching to see what happens but I do think we need an injection of Elvis and soon, please Grin

MissEliza · 11/10/2017 19:18

I don't think MK was wearing makeup except for the stuff you need to wear on screen but she definitely had some kind of lash lift. She is naturally very pretty (and knows it)

kazzaD66 · 11/10/2017 19:22

rhu I thought the same thing about CJ's speech re the 2015 quake - it jarred a bit. I also can't quite focus on anything else but MK's eyebrows when they are on screen and I don't think they're as bad in Nepal and SA/ Afghanistan as they seem to be once they get to Malaysia, judging from the pics from the cast. Why oh why has she done it? So unnecessary. Just listening to London Grammar CD - oh, the memories of S1 Smile

Rhubarb01 · 11/10/2017 20:39

I know what you mean about the eyebrows Kazza. To be honest I find a lot of women's eyebrows positively scary these days!

Talking about London Grammar made me think about the title sequence and the fact that they've changed it yet again. I understood that they felt it necessary to change between series 1 and series 2 given the subject matter and different leads but I don't know why they did it again and I didn't like the theme tune much. There's no getting away from the fact that Series 1 was just so different to anything that has followed.

Alwaysfrank · 11/10/2017 21:15

Still haven't watched it yet - my cheeky preview plans were scotched this morning as dh was working from home unexpectedly! And now he's too tired to watch it tonight. Is the soundtrack non-existent then? I hoped they might address that this time...

pixieg1rl · 11/10/2017 21:18

I pretty much enjoyed it, after all it was the first episode in a new series and there’s a lot to do in a short space, so there’s clunky exposition dialogue (do we really need to know Maisie’s Dad was a postie?), new characters to shoe horn in, and others need to bed into their characters.

The dynamic between Maisie and Georgie is a bit muddled, I don’t think Georgie knows what she’s doing, she might be good at training medics but outside of that role she’s a bit lost. I have high hopes for Cpt James losing it in a big way (and various theories that are probably way off the mark as this is primarily a programme about females in the army); I’d love Ben to be given something much more meaty to play than staring moodily into the middle distance, because the man can act.

Agree that Fingers & Brains are woefully under used, such old hands should be pivotal to the section, but I like Rab and Monk has taken over the Mansfield part.

Ilovelblue · 11/10/2017 22:35

Evening everyone. Just re-reading all our thoughts on last night whilst watching the episode again for the third time. I think I aired my views last night so won't go over them again but although I liked it last night, I like it more tonight. Definitely not enamoured with Maisie though. I think TG has gone overboard with her character and we all seem agreed that a squaddie with her attitude would have had it all beaten out of her during basic training.

For those of us who like Elvis (and with apologies to those who aren't fans), this photo appeared a while ago during filming so he definitely does resurface.

pixie do you think this is the way they might write CJ/BA out if there's another series?

Oh and forgot but I don't like Milan very much. I wouldn't be considering snogging him, sorry.

Rhubarb01 · 11/10/2017 22:49

He wouldn't be on my snog radar either ilove.

Flowerfan · 11/10/2017 22:53

Ditto ilove not a patch on Elvis.

I have been wondering if CJ and Elvis may be written out this time and I read something last week on here about tears in episode 10 which is nearly the end of the series and it is worrying away in my head.

I cannot imagine the programme without CJ although it is Our Girl not our lad unfortunately!
Time will tell.

Wycombe123 · 11/10/2017 23:01

I quite enjoyed the first episode although not much action. I liked the setting and story line so far. Great to see more of CJ and hope he isn't just a bit part this time. I didn't find Georgie so annoying as previously but not sure why exactly. Maisie is not very believable and I don't think she would get away with that behaviour. Section 2 seem to be getting smaller and smaller - would the Army really send such a tiny team I wonder. Anyway will watch again to see the bits I missed.

TRish47 · 11/10/2017 23:11

I also read about the tears. However it was TG replying to another tweet and he stated that episode 10 was a bit of a tear feast. Perhaps CJ has done his dash (so to speak) and that it is TG way of writing him out.
Having survived major earthquakes over here and 1000’s of aftershocks I am surprised that Georgie and Milan would have been allowed to enter buildings without their helmets. I have only seen snippets of this on YouTube and have to say that the aftershocks bought back some horrific memories for me.
Rhu, Milan would not be on my snog radar either. Elvis all the way Grin.

TRish it's difficult for those of us who haven't experienced this to imagine what it would be like. I came across an article online full of complaints about the way that the earthquake effects were filmed - to be fair it wasn't Hollywood style but this is the BBC - however, you forget that its trying to depict something quite horrifying. We don't know how lucky we are here. There have been some incidents but they are pretty small and tend to cause only light damage.

I've just seen the short trailer for episode 2 - kind of predictable really but Maisie may redeem herself a little.

TheweewitchRoz · 11/10/2017 23:53

I enjoyed it Smile

TRish47 · 12/10/2017 00:45

I am looking forward to seeing the series. I am thinking that Maisie might grow on me!
At least she is makeup free!
I loved the goat scene (again on YouTube) I might look later to see if the episode is up. S2 was up a few days after it aired in the UK.

Richtea19 · 12/10/2017 07:26

I've a few days to digest the first episode (and re watched it!) certainly better than S2 but I thought it was a little slow, although the last 5 mins got interesting enough for me to want to watch next week. Well of course I would anyway for a glimpse of CJ.
Highlights.... nice bum in combats, over active tongue and that stroke of the goats ear! I think a lot of us had nice thoughts then! Wink

Flowerfan · 12/10/2017 07:42

Morning
Reading through the comments from everyone I feel it would be dangerous for TG to write out CJ and Elvis if he does do an OG4 as I think a lot of viewers would be lost.

However they might not want to be in another series 😢😢😢😢

kazzaD66 · 12/10/2017 11:43

I think the role of Elvis is a lot more fluid. It would be a bit unrealistic if 2 Section constantly needed / worked alongside SF, esp the same one or two SF soldiers, so it would be easy for TG to write LP out if he wanted to. I know we shouldn't read too much into the twitter and instagram accounts of the cast, but it doesn't seem as though LP has been filming in the Far East, although Mark Armstrong (Spanner?) has.

BA could go either because CJ goes wibble and dies or leaves the army, although not yet cos it seems he is filming in the Far East, or he finally gets promoted to Major, which would take him away from 2 Section and become a more peripheral character although it would seem that no one but Georgie gets promoted in 2 Section! Hmm By the way, what happened to Finger's idea of applying for the marines(?) or whoever - or will that be addressed in this series?

MissEliza · 12/10/2017 13:19

Am I the only one who thinks MK's acting skills largely consist of raising her eyebrows and shaking her head indignantly?

Magi84 · 12/10/2017 14:31

No MissEliza you're not alone in thinking MK's acting skills make great use of her eyebrows. Probably why so many have remarked on how well groomed they are. Must admit I am an avid fan of the first series and have only continued to watch S2 and now S3 because of BA! I miss Molly I'm afraid. Have lurked on this thread for a long time and really enjoy all the comments.

MissEliza · 12/10/2017 14:48

I think we're like minded Magi. There was so much potential in series 1 from the whole cast.

Rhubarb01 · 12/10/2017 14:55

I think our attention was probably diverted too much to notice MissEliza Grin.

To be honest, though, yes I would agree that she does surprised/annoyed/irritated pretty well and eyebrows are pretty useful for that. I actually find it quite difficult to distinguish between Georgie and Tina from Corrie. I think it would be interesting to see her do something completely different - maybe a period drama or something (and I don't mean Tina and Bobby) that would be a real stretch. Perhaps something with a different accent might be an idea. However, who knows what is coming up. Maybe we will be seeing a totally different side to her before all twelve episodes are done.
