Midsomer Murders - Joyce Barnaby

I haven't seen Midsomer Murders for years but I watched it tonight.

I've just realised that Barnaby is there (I did notice it's a different actor!) but where's Joyce and Cully?

Barnaby has a new partner so what happened to Joyce and her terrible cooking?

When they retired my parents moved to a village which has a "Midsummer Barn Dance" Shock No-one has been murdered yet much to our disappointment.

Always loved John Nettles, saw him out shopping once, lovely tan.

The new one is known as "The Dollop" in our house.

Clawdy · 24/08/2017 06:54

The first one was the nicest! Troy. Really missed him.

cary, yes This Life was so good! One of those programmes you rush home to see and look forward to all week. It surprises me sometimes how "mature" the actors that were in it now seem. Jack Davenport- he was delightful- that on off relationship with Daniele Nardini was brilliant!

Lobelia123 · 24/08/2017 07:29

I love all the MMs (as a South African it probably gives me a completely skewed view of life in England....I imagine everyone lives in picturesque country cottages and the death rate is very high) but prefer the "new" Barnaby and his family and sidekicks....DS Nelson was my favourite of these :)

Just Googled John Hopkins who played DCI Scott... WHAT A BABE, wasn't wrong to fancy him Grin

I used to love watching and making up characters and plotlines with DS2 when Joyce was on.
Quite disappointing that new Mrs B doesn't do the art class/ village fete/ history/ drama society stuff.

Halsall · 27/08/2017 11:40

Iirc, the actor who played Joyce Barnaby was/is the RL partner of the series director Wink

I live in MM country and they've filmed bits of it in various nearby locales. We spend most episodes ignoring the ludicrous plots (crushed by a wheel of cheese, anyone?) and amuse ourselves trying to work out where the locations are.

CatCoriander · 27/08/2017 14:18

I like the new Barnaby - mainly because of Sykes the dog! Joyce set my teeth on edge.

theliverpoolone · 27/08/2017 15:03

I took dd to a ballet a couple of years ago, and Joyce was in it! Not dancing (!), she had this strange narration part. It was very bizarre.

I'm a bit Hmm at the love for John Nettles - I always thought he couldn't act for toffee - in MSM he always seemed to have just one, monotone expression - a bit too much like Ken Barlow for me!

Ropsleybunny · 27/08/2017 15:22

the 'new' Barnaby and wife look like a low-budget casting director's version of David and Samantha Cameron. On a rough day.

This made me laugh hard Grin I can actually see a resemblance too Grin

^ this 😂😂😂

I couldn't stand sappy Joyce Barnaby. She always happened to be a member of the choir, the art group, the bellringers or whatever society was about to have a member bumped off.

I was secretly hoping that Tom would totally flip in his final episode and kill the dreadful woman but sadly it never happened.

Lucysky2017 · 27/08/2017 19:46

It always felt as if it were written for its German market (very popular there) in recent years, portraying a couple that would not exist in real life and then they were forced to put ridiculously unlikely black people into it too which made it almost comical and so untrue to life.

MrsK · 27/08/2017 20:39

My first boyfriend was John Nettles Godson

Halsall · 27/08/2017 21:13

They seem to love it in France too. It was on in Paris when we were there once. We kept seeing very excitable trailers about Inspecteur Barnabee because DH insisted on his daily fix of Des Chifffes et des Lettres

Androidsdreamofelectricsheep · 27/08/2017 21:36

Glad I am not the only one who found Joyce Barnaby annoying. She never seemed a good match for Tom.

Flyingflipflop · 27/08/2017 21:40

Joyce Barnaby is currently serving life with no parole. They finally realised that all the murders were linked to her. Whenever she got a new hobby, the death toll went up.

squoosh · 27/08/2017 22:01

'they were forced to put ridiculously unlikely black people into it too which made it almost comical and so untrue to life.'

Yeah, adding a bit of diversity to the show what was made the whole thing so unbelievable...

Bubblysqueak · 27/08/2017 22:07

I love the new barnabys and their dog.

Out2pasture · 27/08/2017 22:08

MM my fave Netflix binge watch......

FetchezLaVache · 27/08/2017 22:09

I always felt a bit sorry for Joyce because of the way Tom and Cully always shared secret looks and raised eyebrows at the latest crap meal she put in front of them, etc. Hilarious mocking of the housewife-who-can't-cook lifted straight from Butterflies.

And the fucking theme tune. Am I alone in being unable to tolerate it?

hamsterloverlover · 27/08/2017 22:12

please watch her in \link{\beasts} Grin

LottieDoubtie · 27/08/2017 22:15

Ah MM the comforting theme tune of grizzly death 😃

MrsJoyOdell · 27/08/2017 22:15

The best MM ever is definitely the one where Orlando Bloom gets killed by a pitchfork to the stomach/chest Grin I love the originals and annoy DH put them on frequently.

derxa · 27/08/2017 22:20

We love MM in the derxa household. The mere mention of Cully makes us hoot with laughter. Yes the evenings just fly by in hedonistic merriment.
