Anyone watching?

I agree about Dominic, HandmaidsTail. I wonder if a child has been included as they are going to show how IS use children to blow up/behead no believers.

I think the next few episodes are going to be difficult to watch, but it is a drama that needed to be made/shown.

What it's missing for me at the moment is the story of why these people went out to join IS. I hope they do go into this, otherwise it is a pretty massive gap.

Oldowl · 21/08/2017 21:14

Isaac not Dominic.

Would the child not be acting a bit more traumatised by this? Not saying the child acting is bad but weirdly scripted? Or has he been brain washed?

buddhasbelly · 21/08/2017 21:23

I don't know if I can keep watching this

squoosh · 21/08/2017 21:24

My God. The aftermath scene in the neonatal ward.

Horrifying.

BarbaraBitchFace · 21/08/2017 21:24

Fuck that last scene.

BarbaraBitchFace · 21/08/2017 21:25

That was easily the most shocking scene I've ever seen on TV. Usually babies are off limits.

Fuck.

CoolCarrie · 21/08/2017 21:26

Shit that scene, horrifying what people do to each other.

RuncibleSp00n · 21/08/2017 21:29

Oh god. I thought I was pretty strong of stomach and un-shockable. But then that last scene (neonatal ward). Ugh. My brain can't ever un-see that.

I do agree though that it needs to be seen and appreciated that this is the brutal reality of war.

daimbar · 21/08/2017 21:32

Horrifying scene. I agree most shocking thing I've ever seen on TV.

BarbaraBitchFace · 21/08/2017 22:00

This is messing with my head. I feel a level of sympathy for some of these characters. Then I remember how truly horrifying their beliefs are and deserve no sympathy.

CoolCarrie · 21/08/2017 22:01

WTF was that stupid doctor expecting? So called intelligent woman dragging her son into that hellhole!

The SCBU/NICU scene Sad I've never seen anything like it on TV.

One of the fighters is clearly having doubts.

MyBeloved · 21/08/2017 22:42

Yes let's hope the next episode stops with the poignant background music and just makes it clear what a bunch of twisted bastards they all are

100% agree

Mrscaindingle · 21/08/2017 23:35

But you have to feel a level of sympathy for some of the characters otherwise there's no drama. There has to be some gullible people who go out believing everything they're told only to find it a completely different scenario when they get there. However have no sympathy for the doctor and the nightmare world she's dragged her poor son into.

Lottapianos · 22/08/2017 12:55

I think its very well done so far. There's a real sense of dread throughout. That poor young woman who got married off to the older man looked terrified when they were alone together. He's certainly not the hot young hunk she was dreaming of

The young guy who found out that his brother had been beheaded looked horrified at first. It was chilling to see him rip his brother's photo up and try to put it behind him, realising that he had no choice and there was no way out

The doctor is frustrating the hell out of me as well. How could she possibly be so naïve?? And to take her young son with her to a death camp seems pretty unforgiveable right now too.

juneau · 22/08/2017 13:00

I think it's good and it's certainly very topical. I also think that as a nation, actually as the western world, we need to talk about, think about and address the reasons why some people become radicalised and choose to travel to places such as Syria and join IS. Hundreds of Europeans have made this journey as as IS is defeated they are starting to head back. We need to understand who they are, what they believe and why they wish the rest of us dead. Knowledge is power - or at least it's a darn sight better than ignorance.

bobbyjim · 22/08/2017 13:12

I thought this was a good drama till my husband told me they got the Arabic language wrong, they were speaking in North African Arabic, he knows as he's from Algeria, but they should have been speaking Middle eastern Arabic from Syria.
Was probably filmed in Morocco, but big mistake to make.

daimbar · 22/08/2017 18:43

DP and DC are away so will be watching this alone tonight. Feel like I'll need the emotional support of Mumsnet!

buddhasbelly · 22/08/2017 21:07

bobbyjim that's v interesting thanks.

Why is the doctor there??? Why did she bring her son????

Lottapianos · 22/08/2017 21:13

Oh lord, tonight's episode looks absolutely stomach churning so far. Those vile bastards

Ikeameatballs · 22/08/2017 21:32

I missed the first episode but watched last night and watching tonight but a bit behind.

I agree that the motivation is missing.

Mrscaindingle · 22/08/2017 21:36

Juneau I totally agree, we need to understand the motivation behind people leaving comfortable lives in the west to do this. I can understand young men's motivation more, they get to play soldiers and pretty much have carte blanche to do what they want with the local population, but really don't get what's in it for the women
