en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samantha_Lewthwaite
I read she is a Samantha lairhwaite type character.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 23/08/2017 11:05

I found the 'sweetie' woman easy to believe in. There was something in it for her, ie the authority of being in charge of the other women and the chance to be self-righteous, plus there was no indication she was conflicted about anything.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 23/08/2017 11:07

Re the dead people in the village, I think it's perfectly possible they were killed by the other side - Assad's army are hardly perfect, after all, which is one reason there has been so much support for IS.

NancyJoan · 23/08/2017 12:40

really don't get what's in it for the women

They've been groomed. Made to feel special, chosen, been promised a good life, with servants and money to spend. Like the children in the Rochdale grooming/rape cases highlighted by Three Girls, or the girls who think they are going out with their 35 year old teacher, or an ageing Radio 1 DJ. Flattered, given gifts, made to feel special, then once they are caught in the web, they are too scared/powerless to do anything but go along with it.

bbcessex · 23/08/2017 12:50

Do you think the mujahideen had murdered those men and women in the village to stir up anti shia feeling?'

I did wonder that, but like Countess sad, it's very believable that they were murdered by Assad's army.

I also thought their religious beliefs would probably prohibit them from stripping the women so it didn't seem likely.

I see your point though, definitely not clear.

I'm still not sure if the story is strong enough to act as a deterrent though. I can see how the depiction of life for the women might not entice, but as far as the men are concerned, if you are leaning toward heading over to fight the fight, I haven't seen much yet that would make you re-consider.

Rhubarbginisnotasin · 23/08/2017 14:22

I'd be interested to know how many UK jihadis are fluent in Arabic. I bet the reality is more likely the 'western' arseholes are separate from the Arabic 'fighters', they probably use them as front line cannon fodder, though I'm obviously speculating

From the Quran alone they'd know quite a bit.

Rhubarbginisnotasin · 23/08/2017 14:26

Im really enjoying this but its a pity the research didn't extend to learning about not eating or taking food with you left hand.

AdalindSchade · 23/08/2017 14:47

That totally jarred with me too. Bit crap.

I can't wait for 9pm

HappydaysArehere · 23/08/2017 18:23

At first I worried that children/young people at a loose end might see this as an adventure. Then the women were welcomed and husbands were mentioned! Then the aggression set in displayed by both men and women started warnings. Still not certain whether this programme is any kind of a good idea. I just hope it doesn't have the wrong sort of influence on inpressionable youngsters.

MyBeloved · 23/08/2017 19:17

I read somewhere that they had to edit/cut certain scenes for being 'too shocking'.

bbcessex · 23/08/2017 19:29

I don't know if I'm hardened to things more now but most of it hasnt really been that 'shocking' so far.. as in, I expected it to be atrocious and it is..

The scene that particularly sticks in my mind was the executioner literally rubbing salt in the wound.. that stood out as being even more sadistic than what he was actually doing.

Rhubarbginisnotasin · 23/08/2017 19:37

Just thinking maybe your sil felt that seeing as it was your brother who sacrificed so much for you that it's them who should reap the benefits and not your nephew who by the sounds of it is set up to have a high earning future career

I haven't found it shocking. Its nothing we haven't seen on the news or read of in the media. Not to mention what we've heard from friends who have lived it.

bbcessex · 23/08/2017 19:48

Rhubarb. I haven't got any experience but I do agree that it's not been shocking and perhaps it should have been.

Maybe tonight's episode will change things..

Oldowl · 23/08/2017 20:01

I am certainly finding it shocking and uncomfortable watching.

I wonder if that Syrian village, that they put up the name of, was a real life massacre or just a made up name for the dramatisation.

I am not enjoying this drama but feel compelled to see how it all ends (I would much prefer to be drained by Long Lost Families, and weep at people being reunited rather than beheaded, raped or tortured).

I'm really enjoying it, but as others have said, it's not that shocking. The only thing I've never read before is the organ removal but, which if true is bloody gruesome.

Rhubarbginisnotasin · 23/08/2017 20:08

I think it was shocking in real terms but this series is just second hand news. However, after 40 years of living in the ME and having friends who've fled these atrocities as well as having other experiences that I wont go into because of the DM I have to admit that apart from the eating with the left hand i mentioned earlier I am enjoying the work thats gone into the series.

Isn't it awful though that people can become so jaded.

You are so right, it should shock us more!

MinesaBottle · 23/08/2017 20:24

Going back to the doctor...I wonder if being ordered to remove the prisoners' organs and then being lashed for refusing, and then seeing her young son being encouraged to 'kill' a dummy will all add up to the last straw. Was discussing with DH and we think her motivation was purely wanting to help her fellow Muslims in what she sees as a legitimate state, she is so single minded and driven that she wilfully ignored all the horror she'd have heard about. But now she's there, in the midst of the horror, and realising that it's not what she signed up for/was lured to. I think she'll try and escape - if she does I hope she takes her son and that the son survives. He had no choice whatsoever.

As for the others - the bearded Londoner seemed very gung-ho and under no illusions, in fact was actively enjoying it all. The teenage girl is a naive idiot and I don't think she'll survive. The other man - I find it hard to believe he cringes at beheadings and disapproves of slavery given the fact he's there (although there was another character, the Scottish guy, who seemed also to disapprove of the rape element of slavery), but again maybe there's some wilful blindness. I get the feeling he wanted to emulate his brother. Until he found out the truth and now he's stuck.

MrsGrindah · 23/08/2017 20:24

I think this has been riveting. Made you think, made you feel uncomfortable but reeled you in. I too have been exasperated by the Dr character though..she seemed surprised by the most basic things like being expected to cover up.
I know it's a dramatisation but I feel,it's a good balance between showing the horror and showing some insight into how east radicalisation can happen. I'm not actually that keen to know the characters back stories - I think it was clear from the outset that this was going to focus on what happens when reality dawns on some people. One of the best things I've seen on TV this year
