However - does anyone remember 'Tough Love'? It was a two-part police drama on ITV starring Adrian Dunbar and Ray Winstone?

mysteryfile.com/blog/?p=13615

The programme starts with Michael Love, played by Adrian Dunbar, picking up an award from the mayor of his northern city for the way in which his methods had cut the crime figures drastically. Intercut with this was the gangland style killing of a clearly lowlife thug.

Soon after, Love’s longtime sidekick, the hard-bitten career policeman Detective Constable Lenny Milton (the lead role played by Ray Winstone), is approached by someone from the police corruption agency who says that the murdered man had evidence that Love is corrupt. Milton is forced to cooperate but believes that doing so will clear his friend from the charges.

I never knew this thread was here!!

I am satisfied with the ending although some of our theories were way superior.

I loved Roz in this one, and Thandie played the slowly unravelling under pressure really well - Ted's proud dad look was ace too Smile

Happy that Michael Farmer is safely back with his nan too Smile

stella23 · 30/04/2017 23:19

stella how did you miss this?
Dot shot her, just after she'd emailed (the list?) Steve.* ha ha, not know for my concerntration, but series 3 had all come flooding back thanks too link. Think I might need to re watch them all

MinesaBottle · 30/04/2017 23:23

Why did a Balaclava Man show up at the station? Did Hilton send him to meet Jamie and Lakewell?

BringMeTea · 30/04/2017 23:45

Aye Feral and is it wrong that I would forgive a zombie departure if JM would make it so? Grin

tribpot · 30/04/2017 23:51

So back to the phone numbers and continuity errors we suspected. The first screenshot is the number Hilton wrote down on a napkin for Ros. The second is the 'same' napkin which she presented tonight as evidence against L-A-K-E-W-E-L-L.

Mother of God - it's the final LOD! Watch as Roz Buckells up for the ride-has she managed to Lakewell enough to uncover Big Fella H with no reciprocity?

DispatchReady · 30/04/2017 23:52

Wow that was good but would like to rewatch as I always pick up so much more second time around! I did gasp when Ros produced the napkin!

Don't like the fact that the Maneet storyline wasn't resolved...but she'll be back from mat leave in the next series so things may be answered then.

Funny that normally the AC12 office is fairly empty, when they needed to find the cars etc it was teeming with extras!!

MarilynWhirlwindRocks · 01/05/2017 00:40

Feral, Another ace thread title Grin

Update from previous one:

Well, events off-screen proved equally as exciting for us:

OPERATION BACKDOOR (see what I did there?) had to be deployed after all (made it to TV literally as opening titles were rolling)...but DP sustained ankle injury mid-garden hurtle, by tripping over wonky paving slab/ stack of plant pots.

Neighbours' nosy visitor (from upstairs bedroom window) was alerted to commotion (and DP's obscene swearing)...much frantic reassuring that, no, we weren't (clearly shit?) burglars ensued.

Half expected local plod to have been summoned, which would've been somewhat ironic Blush

"Yes, Officer, we were so desperate to see Line Of Duty finale (yeah, that's right, the police procedural drama) that we were forced to sneak covertly into our own house..."

To DP's smug satisfaction, we peeped through letterbox to check how long relatives took to get their arses in gear and actually set off: 17minutes!!

So I (grudgingly) admit his OTT contingency planning paid off

Anyhoo...
(aside from DP groaning for frozen pea re-application), hurrah: got to watch uninterrupted!!

Overall, within a 1 hr time constraint, and allowing for enough issues to remain unresolved/ pique our interests for next series, I was mostly satisfied. Congrats, Jed M. Star

Great acting all round, tonight. Star Star

  • Disappointed Maneet a no-show (feel personally responsible: she had, after all, been on Gatwick Watch surveillance). Will cross fingers she's treated fairly and reinstated in series 5.
  • Curious to know how VelmaJodie will deal with Ma'am being in clink/ being shown as fallible. She'd be the world's most irritating prison visitor.
  • Am still rather in love with Farmer's Nana Smile. They can stay safe together in their protected new address.
  • NobleTed, oh you were masterful with your gun skills and stern orders. (I'll even forgive you the police issue blouson).
Your MN admirers refuse to be swayed by mere rumours doubting your integrity. Oily Hilton did indeed bugger off, as hoped.

We got all teary when you half-smiled so lovingly/ proudly at your team of young fellas/ wee girls.

  • Biggest plot surprise? Roz and Nick's kids were capable of speech and emotion all along...
PortCheese · 01/05/2017 00:45

I think Ted had just become disillusioned by the end as he's been working amongst so many bent coppers. He's not bad. He'll never be bad.

I can't sleep because of the build up to this episode, I'm still high on adrenaline Grin

THE WEE WITCH - best line.

ktel1 · 01/05/2017 01:13

I thought the ME had said Tim took hours to die.

According to Roz he was accidentally injured, scratched her then died quickly .

Ceto · 01/05/2017 01:31

I thought she said he took a long time, but not hours. I don't see how he could have - the blood would have had to be flowing fast enough not to clot.

Ceto · 01/05/2017 01:32

I wish we could have seen Jodie's face when she realised that, not only was all the brown-nosing a total waste of time, but it's actually liable to harm her police career.

Ceto · 01/05/2017 02:14

Good grief, Marilyn, they spent 17 minutes faffing before getting going? I thought DH was bad enough, but if he took half that time over the basic action of getting into the car and driving off, I think I'd have to kill him.

MarilynWhirlwindRocks · 01/05/2017 06:51

Ceto,

I know! Just imagine if we'd had to lurk round corner, missing 17 vital minutes of LOD. Angry
He'd be missing more than just fingers...
(Changing into special driving shoes/ special driving gloves/ arguing with his DW about quickest route home/ re-programming his effing SatNav are always involved, I was reliably informed).

Anyway, back to the important stuff:

  • Can someone clarify for my addled brain: if L-A-K-E-W-E-L-L has refused witness protection, yet endangered the top brass corruption chain by slipping up, thus drawing unwelcome attention to it (assume investigation next series), has he knowingly signed his own death warrant? Is he even in the know half as much as he likes to think he is?
"There are some people there's no immunity from..."

I imagine prison officers under orders from top brass higher up the corruption chain will turn a blind eye to cell visits from violent thugs, perhaps?

How far the tentacles spread throughout the very highest levels. Scary stuff.

Alec,

What's that you say? Adrian Dunbar and Ray Winstone on screen together??? Mmm Blush Wink Acting's bound to be top rate.

ILikeBeansWithKetchup · 01/05/2017 07:20

Morning! I went to be well before all you a lot but have been awake most of the night over thinking this:

Am I missing something or is it really inconsequential:

  1. what did Sam tell Steve 'off the record' ??
  2. Since Nick wasn't anything to do with it all - and Roz nothing to do with the wider crimes- why did Steve coming to visit him (which after all he had done before) trigger Snakewell to organise a visit from BM?? Nothing Nick would have said could have led them to BM? Or was it more to do with them wanting to prevent them investigating the Framer fit up more : Steve being attacked wouldn't have prevented this. It doesn't make sense. It's a giant plot hole!!
ILikeBeansWithKetchup · 01/05/2017 07:22

I was actually quite glad that Ifield was what he said he was - investigating police corruption - but it would have made more sense if he was killed for this and Roz had been fitted up to kill him, I guess.

And we now won't ever know why he harvested Hana's fingerprint...

QueenieGoldstein · 01/05/2017 07:34

I think Ted's look is the look of a man that keeps going after corruption but the buggers keep dying so he never gets his big showdown in the way he wants it.

ILikeBeansWithKetchup · 01/05/2017 07:38

Aldo... all this focus on Roz thinking things through because she was such a clever copper...

Her hiding place for the stuff was a place where she had found stuff in a previous investigation??

That's really not that clever...

That' someone suddenly having a brainwave so solving the whole thing' bit should be beneath LoD. I reckon a 90 minute conclusion would have been a bit less 'conveniently ' plotted even thought they spent half the episode looking at traffic cams. It felt a bit like Vera!

ILikeBeansWithKetchup · 01/05/2017 07:52

Also, not aldo ! there is no Aldo!!

Last overnight thought .... I really didn't get much sleep ...

Was the props person engaging in some kind of in joke suggesting Ifield would have had a luxury paddle brush??

KenDoddsDadsDog · 01/05/2017 08:02

Why was it ok for Ted to shoot balaclava man ?

QueenieGoldstein · 01/05/2017 08:03

He was holding a hostage. I thought Ted was previously in AR like Steve or have I dreamt that?

mistermagpie · 01/05/2017 08:10

I was a bit disappointed with that to be honest. I don't know if it's because I had been overthinking it so much, but there still seemed to be things which didn't add up.

  1. Why was Maneet doing what she was doing? It was never explained?
  2. Why was BM sent to bash Steve just because he wanted to ask Nick some questions? Nick wasn't involved in anything so what was the problem with him being questioned?
  3. What happened to Hana? The whole thing about Tims DNA being in her flat felt like it had been shoehorned in anyway and then never went anywhere really. What was his visit to the cafe all about?
  4. Why did Tim even have a balaclava and all those other 'evidence' looking bits in a bag?
  5. Why were the first two women killed? And what was the point of 'releasing' more bits of Leonie after freezing her? This just made it look like Farmer hadn't killed her, so why do it?
  6. How was Farmer living with nana at an undisclosed location now? She was in a care home at the start.
  7. What did murder squad woman (steves ex) say to him 'off the record'?

There are probably more, but the ending for me felt like they needed to finish the series quickly and couldn't be bothered to tie up all the elements of the story. It's a shame because I loved all the other episodes.

PseudoBadger · 01/05/2017 08:13

Sam gave Steve the interview videos off the record.

mistermagpie · 01/05/2017 08:26

Ah ok, that's one answered! Hardly 'off the record' though was it, seeing as he showed them to everyone else.

Also, if Roz wasn't involved in the framing of Michael Farmer (which she wasn't) then why was she so keen to pin it on him? Ok initially she needed to solve the case due to Hilton putting the pressure on, but after that when the case against himstarted looking dodgy she never wavered. Was she just busy with her Tim related problems to really pay attention?

ILikeBeansWithKetchup · 01/05/2017 08:30

I agree with all your questions and am also bothered by a few other things (see above!)

However, I do think Roz kept going for two reasons
a) she had killed Ifield so top priority was covering her tracks
b) her power complex meant she wanted to expose baddies instead of letting AC12 do it? And she didn't give a shit about Farmer, I guess.
