Taxi driver looks the same age as his own son and I find that a bit confusing.

Beth and Ellie really are the only people in the whole town I would want to know in real life. And possibly Beth's daughter, Chloe.

I can't believe they would have failed to pick up on Ed's daughter being, erm, a CID officer on that very case.

ElspethFlashman · 05/04/2017 11:13

What I find a bit wierd given that Mark killed himself is the contrast between him being destroyed by grief and Beth just getting on with life with a rather exasperated air.

Too much of a contrast for me. Not sure if it's a flaw in the writing or the performance but this impatient vibe hasn't come across that great to me.

Also, given she's Trish's case worker, is she going to continue to be? That would be really unbelievable. Nobody keeps working after their husband kills themself. I'm curious how she's going to react as I don't think they've gotten her "right" this year.

Though the intimidation of the rape victim is in character I think. She's always barged in, self righteousness flying.

NotJanine · 05/04/2017 11:24

I don't think the contrast is that surprising. Mark felt a lot of guilt and was losing the rest of his family too. Beth was building a new life for herself, with the job and planning on divorcing Mark.

I think the other victim will either now come forward with some important evidence or will put in a complaint about Beth.

Agree that it would be unbelievable if Beth carried on working.

diddl · 05/04/2017 11:45

"Fingers in ears, humming to myself, trying to blot out diddl's post."

Oh dear, sorry-I thought that it was quite well known that they had done that.

I didn't even watch it & I knew-& it must have been broadcast a couple of years ago.

But Joe confessed again to Mark, didn't he?

Also re Mark's guilt-he was out with an OW wasn't he?

How did they explain Beth not hearing him leave the house?

IAmNotAUserNumber · 05/04/2017 12:58

The portrayal of Beth as a rape counsellor is poor.

  1. Her boss takes her to meet the third victim - surely if the boss wanted to renew contact with that victim she would have done it confidentially, not involving a third party.
  2. Beth's harassment of third victim - stepping beyond her remit of counsellor to Trish - surely a sackable offence if boss didn't respect boundaries either (see 1 above)
  3. She also seems to be acting as police liaison officer and general conduit between Trish and police. The other night when Ellie was about to issue a statement it was Beth they told who then told Trish. I'm guessing that is going beyond her remit too.
It all smacks of the writers wanting to show-horn Beth into a role in the third series, but they've done it with the subtlety of a sledge-hammer.
DubiousCredentials · 05/04/2017 13:04

The portrayal of Mark as a plumber is pretty poor too so at least the scriptwriters are consistent. Only seen him fiddling with pipes in the church once in 6 episodes!

APlaceOnTheCouch · 05/04/2017 13:28

It's odd that they have tried so hard to counter all the negative and dangerous stereotypes around rape but then made the rape counsellors act very unprofessionally. On the one hand, they're encouraging victims to come forward by showing the police as being supportive but otoh the portrayal of the rape counsellors will have the opposite impact. On Twitter a number of rape counselling organisations are having to tweet that they wouldn't pressure anyone into giving statements and that it's only the rapist that is responsible if he goes on to rape someone else.

MusicToMyEars800 · 05/04/2017 13:44

diddl yes mark was with another woman in the first series, he was cheating on beth which is one of the reasons they split I think. I don't think it was Ed that did it, but don't have a clue who did! I think there is some dodgy stuff going on with the taxi driver and the exh.
Abraiid2 I don't think the taxi driver is his biological dad, they split and she was already pregnant when they got back together I think?!

ElspethFlashman · 05/04/2017 13:46

We can hope that Beth gets a bollocking from her boss next week.

Incidentally, OC bollocking Ed's daughter was deeply satisfying. Actually one of my favourite things about Broadchurch is both OC & DT spitting bullets. They do it so well - just exploding. Great fun.

diddl · 05/04/2017 14:10

"Incidentally, OC bollocking Ed's daughter was deeply satisfying. "

It really was, wasn't it?

I mean, even I know that she should have 'fessed up straight away-& that's just through watching cop showsGrin

Also Trish making Cath leave through the garden.

"Skulk off like your husband did!"

Cagliostro · 05/04/2017 14:12

I actually cheered Trish when she said that to Cath :o

DesertIslandPenguin · 05/04/2017 14:32

What I want to know is: where's Nigel? The actor tweeted that he was coming back for s3.

I think Mark's lack of onscreen plumbing just goes to show how far he's declined. He probably doesn't bother answering his work phone and maybe people don't want to call him? Got to be a bit awkward for bystanders in the town after that book's come out and stirred up feelings again.

Have we seen much of Beth's baby this series?

diddl · 05/04/2017 14:35

I do think it's a shame that it was her best friend's husband that she had sex with on the morning of the rape.

Was that the only way to make him temporarily(?) a suspect?

It's very well done though isn't it because I feel for Cath- the double betrayal of it being her best friend, but then she was such a bitch "why you"-as if the rape was a positive! PLus knowing that her husband is a serial shagger. At the end of the day her husband is a heating arsehole & her best friend has been raped & she has chosen her husbandSad

I also don't think that it's Ed-I think that he does care in his own mixed up way enough to not hurt her.

Oh dear, it's not going to be her ex is it?

DubiousCredentials · 05/04/2017 14:44

Nige did make a brief appearance last week or the week before. Maybe it's him keeping the plumbing business going and making enough money to run Mark's flat as well as contributing to the Latimer household.

JoandMax · 05/04/2017 14:56

So many theories!!

I think it's the taxi driver who commits the rape and his weird curly haired wife who films it. They've featured her a fair bit and it's a totally fucked up dysfunctional relationship so who knows?!!!

The sons/Hardys daughter I think is a seperate storyline highlighting the culture of revenge porn and social media shaming

NotJanine · 05/04/2017 15:00

ooh yes, the strange wife could be in on it!

Maybe Miller's son will accidentally get sent the video

diddl · 05/04/2017 15:35

Oh I hope the wife isn't in on it.

I know that it does happen but it would feel a bit too much like a shock for the sake of it tactic.

CoolCarrie · 05/04/2017 16:00

Taxi driver and wife are very odd, notice how she looked when the news was on tv and Miller made a statement, I wonder if she was a victim, made pregnant and had her son by the rapist, or does she know that her hubby did it, or could there be some revenge porn story as pp mentioned. It definitely isn't obvious in any way this time around ( or as gripping tbh)

CoolCarrie · 05/04/2017 16:03

Miller's son definitely shared the porn with taxi driver son,not the other way round, i really think Miller might end up without her son as well as her husband, I've got a gut feeling about him, the comment about not being his father's son might rebound on her.

Graphista · 05/04/2017 16:20

"How did they explain Beth not hearing him leave the house?"
He claimed he was going to an emergency customer I think - call out.

hollyisalovelyname · 05/04/2017 16:38

Not getting the love for Trish.
She slept with her friend's husband.
Bit*h.
Can anyone else remember the welcome she got at the party from the hostess ( forget her nameBlush)

That's not to take away from the awfulness of the rape.

NotJanine · 05/04/2017 16:43

I thought Trish was pretty horrible to cath too. Not sure if it was the trauma making her like that or if she is actually not very nice.

CremeEggThief · 05/04/2017 16:55

I agree, NotJanine. It's really sad that in the aftermath of the rape, the two friends have turned against one another.Sad

diddl · 05/04/2017 17:06

It does make you wonder if they were ever friends!

Cath was hurtful though & Trish hurtful back.

I think that they both gave as good as they got!

Graphista · 05/04/2017 17:11

I think from the beginning it was a 'frenemie' relationship, cath playing the big shot, lady benevolent! Wasn't surprised when Trish said she'd been a queen bee at school.
